page 6 Professional DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS A series of professional development workshops will be offered on Tuesday 4 December 2012 at the Viaduct Events Centre. All professional development workshops are an additional cost and are not included in the conference registration fee. AM Workshops Developing and delivering a cross-cultural training workshop for your institution Time 0900-1230 Cost ISANA Members $150 Non Members $190 Facilitators Mary Furnari, Dr Shanton Chang Many International Education Professionals are cross-cultural experts in their own right. Anyone who has successfully run an Orientation Program and successfully inducted a group of international students would know many of the ins and outs of intercultural interaction. Yet, this cultural knowledge expertise is not always recognised or shared with others within the institution. • Concerns about working with Academics • Exploring some intercultural theories and concepts • Using examples from your experience in the workshop • Providing Tips for other colleagues in your institutions, and • Cultural ‘games’ and role plays that you can use in workshops. If you have ever thought, ‘I need the academics (or other staff) to know more about these students’ backgrounds, culture and expectations,’ this ‘train the trainer’ workshop is for you. Participants will come away from the workshop with key ideas, concepts and tips on how to run successful Cross- Cultural Training Workshops for their colleagues in home institutions. Fundamentals of international student advising Time 0900-1230 Cost ISANA Members $150 Non Members $190 Facilitators Mary Ann Seow, Sylvia Hooker While the growth of international education and international student enrolments has changed the way we provide services to students over the past decade, the principles of effective and accurate student advising remain key to successful student experiences. This session will outline the fundamental elements of effective student advising, and the required knowledge and skills to: • Successfully support students • Develop and deliver support programs and information • Seek out productive networks, and • Locate sources of information for professional development. Areas covered will include working with culturally diverse student cohorts, the role of student advising in dealing with issues and critical incidents, meeting legislative requirements under the National Code, working effectively in the organisation and cultivating volunteer teams. The workshop draws on a number of case studies for participants to analyse and problem-solve. It is suitable for specialised advisers, teachers, administrators and other professional staff who work directly with international students. It is most suitable for people who have fewer than three years experience in international education. PM Workshops Knowing our personal and professional boundaries Time 1300-1630 Cost ISANA Members $150 Non Members $190 Facilitator Brian Johnston Our personal and professional boundaries are perhaps something we don’t consciously think about very much. We may have ‘fixed’ or ‘fluid’ boundaries depending on the situation. Often in our work we are faced with situations that challenge our personal and professional boundaries. The aim of this workshop is for us to reflect on our personal and professional boundaries in relation to our work with our students and consider what new learning, knowledge and skills we may be able to put into practice in our personal and professional lives. In this interactive workshop we will focus on experiential learning, self-reflection and discussion. There will be the opportunity to explore and discuss what can be difficult ethical and cultural scenarios’. Managing critical incidents Time 1300-1630 Cost ISANA Members $150 Non Members $190 Facilitators Mary Ann Seow, Sylvia Hooker This workshop is designed for those who work with International Students at any level. It deals with the practical issues of preparation, planning of policy and procedures and practical ideas (case studies) to deal with actual critical incidents. The half-day session aims to give you enough practical ideas, resources and knowledge to devise or revise policy and procedural guidelines and the steps needed in managing a critical incident. We will also look at issues relating to a natural disaster.
