In the proud legacy of Mercy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Rosary, and St. Thomas Aquinas Mercy
M r . S t e f f e n R e t i r e s A f t e r 4 1 Y e a r s
For the last few
years Bill Steffen
has been thinking
about the right time
to retire from his
long teaching career.
“I wanted to
make sure I retired
while I was still
feeling good about
school,” explained
Steffen, who taught
history at Trinity. “I
wanted to still be positive when I retired.”
Steffen determined that the end of the 2008-2009
school year would be the right time and on May 29
he left the classroom as a teacher for the last time.
Over the course of his 41 years as a teacher, Steffen
taught at St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Thomas Aquinas-
Mercy and then Trinity. Steffen also went to school at
Aquinas. He graduated from high school in 1963
after graduating from Our Lady of Fatima grade
school four years earlier. Following his graduation
from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, after a
stint at St. Louis University, Steffen returned to
Aquinas as a teacher.
And he was the kind of teacher who positively
influenced thousands of students along the way. He
says his students gave back to him as much or more
than he gave them.
1
“The students are the ones that keep you young,’’
explained Steffen, who will turn 65 in July of this
year. “The thing I liked best about teaching is that it
was never the same everyday. You never knew what
the students were going to do from day to day. They
definitely kept it interesting. They kept me young.’’
In addition to teaching, Steffen, who owns a
Master’s Degree from Maryville University, coached
softball, basketball and soccer at times and also
served as a dean of students for several years at
Aquinas.
“The kids haven’t really changed all that much
from when I started teaching,’’ said Steffen. “When I
was in school and when I started teaching kids did
whatever they could to get away with whatever they
could and they still do that today.
“For the most part kids are kids,” added Steffen.
“The kids here at
Trinity have been
really nice to me as I
n e a r r e t i r e m e n t .
They’ve been very
nice. All of the kids in
my advisory hugged
me when they left
advisory for the last
time. That has never
happened before.’‘
Dear Alums of Mercy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Rosary, St.
Thomas Aquinas-Mercy and Trinity,
History will record that the 2009-2010 school year at Trinity was terrific and
another overwhelming success! So much of our success comes from the tradition of
Mercy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Rosary and St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy that is the foundation
of Trinity.
Listed below are some highlights of this school year:
As you have read through these highlights undoubtedly you saw that Trinity is a
well rounded, versatile school where EVERYONE MAKES A DIFFERENCE! We continue
to be grateful for your support in making that happen. May God bless you for your
generous contributions and if you can help in any way, please let us know. Know that we
will pray for you and ask that you remember us in your prayers.
Blessings for a refreshing and restful summer and if you are ever in the
neighborhood, stop in and see us at Trinity.
May the love of the Father enfold us, the wisdom of the Son enlighten us and the
fire of the Spirit enflame us and may the blessing of the Triune God rest on us and abide in
us now and evermore. AMEN.
Grace is one of eight
children in her family. Her
parents are Robert and
Karen Brandon All seven of
her siblings attended either
St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy
or Trinity. Grace’s mom Karen also attended St. Thomas
Aquinas.
Grace had this to say about her first year at
Trinity, “This year at Trinity I participated in
cheerleading and basketball. I planned to do more but I
wanted to get used to the way things work here at
Trinity and to make sure I was able to obtain good
grades while still doing the things I love in order to keep
my scholarship. Because I now know I will be able to
keep up with my school work while doing my activities,
I plan to do more next year. I want to play basketball
and soccer and maybe do cheerleading again. I will also
be a student manager for the football team and I will be
on the yearbook committee. I hope to continue to get
good grades and continue to try many more things
during the rest of my three years at Trinity. “
The 2009-10 scholarship has been awarded to
Luke Connor from Sacred Heart. Welcome
Luke.
One scholarship ($1,000) renewable for 4 years is awarded based
on academics, leadership and service. The candidate must
currently be in a catholic grade school and a son or daughter of a
Mercy, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Thomas Aquinas Mercy or
Rosary graduate.
Trinity’s Renken Says Goodbye after 7 Years
Clarence “Bud” Renken has taught in many different settings over the past 40-plus years
from North Nodaway County, Missouri, Cuba Missouri, the St. Charles Chemical Abuse
Program, Francis Howell High School and Rosary and Trinity Catholic High Schools. There’s no
doubt in Renken’s mind, however, as to where he’s been the most content.
“The last seven years here at Rosary and Trinity have been the most enjoyable for me due to
the size of the school, the behavior of the students, the spirituality of the school and the
community of the staff,” said Renken, who graduated from Northwest Missouri State University
before earning a Master’s Degree with 45 additional hours.
After retiring from Francis Howell High School in the spring of 2003, Renken, a St. Joseph’s,
Missouri native and currently an O’Fallon, Missouri resident, came to Rosary High School as a
part-time History teacher teaching the junior and senior Advanced College Credit classes.
During his first year at Rosary it was announced Rosary and St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy would
merge and Trinity Catholic High School was formed. Renken spent six years at Trinity before
deciding to retire this year.
“This school is on its way. I wanted to stay long enough to see Trinity really make it and it has,’’
said Renken. “I wanted to contribute to its success in a minor way and I think I did that.
“I have received tremendous support in my years here,’’ added Renken, who will turn 68 years old in December. “Sr. Karl Mary and
the rest of the administration have supported me tremendously. I have received more positive comments and more compliments in my
seven years here than in all of the other places combined. Everybody needs a compliment once in a while.’’
Renken’s students would no doubt compliment him and he doesn’t hesitate to return the favor.
“I’ve enjoyed the kids the most,’’ explained Renken. “The kids by far will be what I remember from my years here. I am going to
miss the kids the most.’’What Renken won’t miss is the drive from O’Fallon to Trinity.
“The drive is what really got to me,’’ said Renken, who will spend his newfound free time gardening, working out at the gym and
leisurely reading the New York Times at the library near his home. “I’ll also make sure my wife doesn’t ever have to do any more
housework.’’
Renken’s wife, Rebecca, is a math teacher at Francis Howell who was named Teacher of the Year in the district in 2007.
Steffen and his wife Carol, who is retired from Ameren UE but still works part-time for GMAC, have never
had this type of free time, but they are both ready to embrace it. Steffen and his wife plan to move permanently
to the home at Lake of the Ozarks that they have been enjoying for years. In the meantime, though, a couple of
vacation cruises are planned in the next 12 months.
“We are going to cruise the Southern Caribbean coming up in June and then we have another cruise planned
for next February,’’ said Steffen. “About this time next year is when we plan to move to the lake permanently.
We are going to give that a try. It will be an adjustment to be there all the time but we’re going to try it out. If it
doesn’t work we will move back. It will be nice to have that freedom and flexibility.”
In mid-May Arizona Cardinals football placekicker Neil Rackers
(AM-’95) returned to St. Louis for a weekend of activities in support of
Aquinas-Mercy, On Saturday that weekend, Neil conducted a football
clinic at Trinity for over 120 football players ranging in age from first
Annual Fund Update
There are just a few weeks left in the
2008-2009 Trinity Annual Fund that will wrap
up at the end of the fiscal year June 30, but
there is still time to
make a gift if you
by the end of the
each year goes to
the Trinity Angel
Fund that assists Trinity families with tuition. A recent Trinity graduate
explains how she was a beneficiary of the Angel Fund:
When I graduated from eighth grade in 2005, my mother was
unemployed and a student at Florissant Valley Community College.
My freshman year at Trinity I had a financial sponsor that helped pay
my tuition so I was able to attend Trinity. As I entered my sophomore
year, though, my sponsor could no
longer afford to pay the tuition. Thanks to the Angel Fund, I was able
to continue my education at Trinity. With the superior education I
received at Trinity, I was accepted at schools like Stanford University
and Columbia University and I know as a Trinity graduate I will be
very successful. I don’t know where I would be right now without the
Trinity Angel Fund. My mother
has now graduated from
nursing school and is a nurse
at Christian Hospital Northeast
and this year she was proud to
be able to pay for my tuition
herself.
So as you can see,
your gifts really do matter and
really do Make A Difference to
the young people at Trinity.
Please consider a gift to the
Annul Fund this year and help
us reach our goal. Gifts may
be sent to Trinity Catholic High
School, c/o Annual Fund, 1720 Redman Ave., St. Louis,
MO 63138. Checks may be made payable to Trinity
Catholic High School. If you have already made a gift this
year thanks for your support.
