Storm Clouds Don’t Dampen the Fun at Prom 2008
RYAN COOPER
While prom 2008 was certainly
was one of the wettest
on record at Trinity, it
was still a very fun and
memorable evening
for both the juniors
and seniors who
attended. The April
25th event took place
downtown at Windows
Off Washington. The
venue, with its modernindustrialized-art
deco
design along with the
hundreds of fl ickering
candles scattered about
the tables defi nitely set
the mood for the night
and added a beautiful
ambience.
While the storm
clouds had robbed
those in attendance of a
sunset that evening, the
views from the balcony
that overlooked the City Museum property
and several downtown lofts were equally
breathtaking.
COURTNEY HAYES
Imagine a night at the Oscars, and
you are right up close to see who won the big
awards. This year’s Renaissance Assembly
was close enough. Hosted by Trinity’s own
Ryan Cooper, who will unfortunately be
leaving next year. This year was a real
treat, being one of the last major events of
the school year, and a bittersweet end with
Mrs. Hey’s goodbye.
It started off with the Red Carpet
talk with the students posed as reporters,
trying to get a comment from Mr. Witte,
who looks remarkably like Brad Pitt.
Unfortunately, Brad, excuse me, Mr. Witte
had no comment.
Then it was on to the Trinity
Treasures, the students picked by teachers
as outstanding in the classroom, not only
for their grades, but for their bright spirit
and enthusiasm in class. Also included,
was introductions to the major groups who
put their hard work into Trinity, including
Diversity Club, Newspaper, Student
Council, The WYSE Team, and The
Renaissance Committee. And of course the
announcement of the movie survey results
from each class for favorite movie, favorite
action movie, favorite actor and actress,
favorite animated movie, favorite director,
and favorite movie treat. The answers
were presented by Ray Kannenberg, Jen
Astudillo, Kevin Gondaho, and Kelsey
George.
The danceline and cheerleaders also
made a special appearance. The danceline
did “Dancing through the Decades,” with
songs from Chicago, Grease, Flashdance,
and Hannah Montana. The cheerleaders
also did a great routine to “Get Your Head
in the Game” from High School Musical.
We even got to see funny movie
parodys by students, teachers, and the
baseball and girl’s volleyball teams. It started
off with the baseball team’s hilarious parody
of Field of Dreams starring Patrick Hanlon,
Jordan Stretch, Ryan Stanley, and Mr.
Grumich. Then there was the girl’s volleyball
team’s parody of Forrest Gump. The parody
starred Mr. Touzinsky as Forrest, Jenny
Pearl as Jenny, Mr. Witte as the president
and a football player, Emily Seithel as the
nurse on the bench, and a cameo by Ben
Batzer as Forrest’s son Little Forrest. Then
it closed with the math teachers’ version of
Snakes on a Plane, entitled Snakes on a
Coordinate Plane, starring a frightened Mr.
Lund, Mr. Wamble, and Mrs. Relleke. They
The menu, which included salad,
stuffed chicken, assorted vegetables, and
hors d’oeuvres-style dessert, ensured that
Seniors Adam Brewer poses with Ali Koerper and Lia Weber,
two of the Prom court members.
no prom-goer left hungry. And the open
bar continuously supplied dancers with all
of the kiddie cocktails they could drink.
A Real Renaissance Assembly
also featured spoofs of movie posters with
titles like Curious George (Kelsey George),
Air Bud (Mr. Renken), and The Green Miles
(Mrs. Miles).
And don’t forget the concert band
and choir. The band gave an amazing
performance and the choir featured songs
from the musical Les Les Les Miserables Miserables Miserables with solos
by Julia Leonard, Josh Zeller, and Joe
Burkard.
And we couldn’t have a Renaissance
assembly without a senior farewell video
showing pictures of this year’s graduating
HAROLD FOX
A few weeks back, the Trinity
Community was told that Mrs. Mary Hey
would be leaving her post as Trinity’s
principal and moving on to John F. Kennedy
High School as their new principal. Before
she starts this new chapter in her life, I gave
Mrs. Hey a variety of questions to refl ect on
her time here these past 4 years.
HF: What are some of your special
memories that you have had at Trinity these
past 4 years?
Mrs. Hey: I have so many special memories
of Trinity. I have especially enjoyed the times
I go into the classrooms and see students
engaged in learning. Watching kids and
teachers working together always makes
me happy. I enjoy talking to students in
the cafeteria and delievering the Student of
the Week goodies. I love the activities that
excite and involve our students, such as
Spirit Week, dances, concerts, art displays,
and sports events.
HF: When it’s your last day at Trinity, what
kind of feelings and emotions will you be
going through?
Mrs. Hey: I am excited about my new
position but hate to say goodbye. There is
so much good stuff happening at Trinity!
HF: How do you feel you have changed
Trinity since your fi rst day here?
Mrs. Hey: When I came to Trinity, we were
only a year old. I helped put together a
written curriculum, introduced Renaissance,
and worked on a school improvement
plan.
HF: How would you like to be remembered
as a part of the Trinity Past?
Mrs. Hey: I hope that I will be remembered for
helping Trinity to be stronger academically
As always, the prom court
was honored towards the middle of the
evening. The couples that represented the
senior class were: Danny
Byrne and Ali Koerper,
Ryan Kinealy and Meghan
Riley, Adam Brewer and
Michele Yates, Travis
Edelen and Lia Weber,
and Davarius McElroy
and Meredith Russo. The
prized titles of prom king
and queen went to Travis
Edelen and Meghan Riley
respectively.
As the evening
continued, those in
attendance spent the rest
of their time on the dance
fl oor and chatting with
friends. Prom turned out
to be a beautiful event,
and allowed all of the
seniors a valuable time
to bond and be together
before graduation and
before everyone in the
class of 2008 goes on their separate ways.
class.
To fi nish it all off, was Mrs. Hey’s
bittersweet goodbye. With thank you gifts
from the student council, the Trinity Parent’s
Organization, and the faculty and staff,
followed by a reception in the courtyard
where the students could personally thank
Mrs. Hey for her four years of hard work at
Trinity.
Special thanks to the Renaissance
Committee and Mr. Witte, Mr. Quinn, and
Mr. Reardon whose hard work defi nitely
paid off for the assembly.
A Final Goodbye to Mrs. Hey
– getting teachers and students more
engaged in teaching and learning.
HF: How has Trinity changed you as a
person and school administrator?
Mrs. Hey: I have been so fortunate to work
with wonderful people while at Trinity. The
students, staff, parents, board members,
and Sr. Karl Mary have made this job a
pleasure. I learned so much while here.
Mrs. Mary Hey
HF: In your 4 years here, what do you hope
Trinity has received from you?
Mrs. Hey: I hope that as a result of my work
here, Trinity is stronger academically. That
Trinity is a place where students know they
can receive a quality Catholic education.
HF: Your fi rst year here, 2004, was also the
fi rst year for our senior Class of 2008. What
are your hopes for you and the Class of
2008 as you both move on to new things?
Mrs. Hey: The Class of 2008 and I began
and end our time at Trinity together. Just as
On Monday, April 28, 2008, Trinity’s
chapter of the National Honor Society
inducted 16 new members. These were
Colleen Arends, Jennifer Astudillo, Frank
Banks, Ben Batzer, Sarah Bogaski, Natalie
Fish, Holly Hurd, Aaron Johnson, Julia
Leonard, Sarah Madden, Ryan Mircsov,
Megan Rackers, Spencer Ross, Sara
The Academic Awards Night
immediately followed. Perfect attendance
awards were fi rst on the agenda, including
two for seniors James Sirna and Veronica
Breen who had perfect attendance all
four years. Honor roll for the fi rst three
quarters was defi nitely the biggest category
of the night. Then, four seniors received
recognition for going well over the service
hour requirement. Department awards
were next, with a few students dominating.
The Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum
Laude seniors followed. Seniors who had
received college scholarships, had taken
the college preparatory curriculum, and
were in the top ten percent of their class
received these awards.
Following those scholarships and
awards were the Phi Beta Kappa Scholar
Award and Missouri Scholars Academy.
Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete Award went
to senior Missy Exely, who has not only been
on three varsity teams this year, but also
was in National Honor Society. Elizabeth
Herr received recognition for being chosen
as the Archbishop May Service Awardee.
The fi nal awards for the night, the Crimson
and Silver Awards went to Ryan Cooper
and Brittany Daniel.
The night ended with punch and
cookies in the gallery, provided by the
Trinity Parent Organization.
I am moving on to a new chapter of my life
with new challenges, I hope that our senior
class is ready for the adventure that awaits
them. I wish you all the best that life can
bring you. You have the tools – use them!
HF: What are your hopes for the school and
students at Trinity?
Mrs. Hey: My hope is that the school will
continue to grow – not only in numbers, but
academically and spiritually.
HF: What will you treasure most about your
time at Trinity?
Mrs. Hey: I have developed some wonderful
relationships with the teachers, students,
and families while at Trinity. I will treasure
all those memories – and hopefully, our
paths will cross in the future.
HF: What are your plans as you move into
this next chapter of your life?
Mrs. Hey: My plans are to become the
principal of John F. Kennedy Catholic High
School on July1. It is an exciting time in my
life, with new opportunities and challenges.
Mrs. Hey has been a big part of Trinity in
the past 4 years. She has proven that she
is a strong leader, and a kind, caring person
who worked hard for Trinity. Thanks in part
to Mrs. Hey, Trinity has become “The Best
of the Best” and she has helped “graduate
responsible, christian citizens.” She has
helped establish unity in all areas of the
Trinity Community. As her time at Trinity
comes to an end, as all things must, Mrs.
Hey will leave having made Trinity Catholic
High School stronger than what it was back
in 2004 and ready to be here for years to
come. We wish her the best of luck on the
new chapter in her life. We hope you will
always cherish your past here at Trinity as
you move on to your future full of exciting
and challenging things.

Lady Titans Track Stays Strong
AMY SCHLESS
The Lady Titans Track team
ran through one tough season. With
a team made up of eighteen girls, the
team went strong throughout, even
when things started looking bleak. “We
started out the season strong with 18
girls, but now we only have fi ve or six,”
sophomore Lauren Meredith said, “We did
pretty well in the beginning and did fantastic
considering that we had to change our relay
teams every time we went to a meet.”
The girls showed great strength
and spirit and with such a small team,
used to the new vigorous practice schedule.
The fi nal result, as seen by squad and fans
alike, is a vast improvement in the quality
of the routines. The cheerleaders may
make the stunts, jumps, kicks, cheers,
and dances look easy, but in reality these
complicated performances take several
long practices a week. Besides practicing
for pep rallies and games, the girls also
The Holocaust: Retold
AMY SCHLESS
On April 2 nd , the Sophomores were
called down to the gym during academic
lab for a presentation on the Holocaust.
The guest speaker was Ms. Diane Ross,
who works with the Holocaust Museum.
She spoke of the tragedies people suffered
through during the Holocaust – the ghettos,
children being brainwashed into the Hitler
Youth, among other things that would truly
horrify anyone who heard them. She also
brought with her the jacket that a Jewish
person would have worn, and other
artifacts. Everyone got the chance to ask
questions and fi nd out anything they didn’t
know about that time during Hitler’s reign.
During her speech, the gym was so
silent, you could hear a pin drop – everyone
was amazed that such awful things could
have taken place, without anyone putting a
stop to it. It was a moving experience for all
that attended it.
Everyone at Trinity knows that “from
trinity comes unity.” On April 4 th 2008, the
Juniors prepared to receive their class rings
at the annual Junior Ring Mass. But for the
juniors, it was so much more than a ring
with their graduation year on it – it is a sign
that their high school years are coming to
an end. The Junior advisors, which were Mr.
Siesener, Mr. Witte, Mrs. McNiff, and Mrs.
Alexander, introduced their homerooms,
saying how proud they were of each one
of their students. Fr. Beighlie then gave a
wonderful homily telling the juniors how
they showed great unity and that respect
for each other was key.
In the end, the Ring Mass was not
just a mass, but a symbol to the Junior
class: a symbol that they are ready to be
leaders at Trinity.
in Math); Other high scorers for Trinity
were: juniors Mark Becker (Computer
Science) and Jennifer Astudillo (English),
sophomore Garrett Beckham (Chemistry)
and freshman Ed Ross (Biology). The
team fi nished fi rst at Regionals in February
and fi rst at Sectionals in March in order to
advance to the State Finals held in Rolla.
Taking fi rst place in Division II was Visitation
Academy and third place was Salem High
School. The Trinity Catholic WYSE team
is coached by Mr. Frank Cange, Chemistry
and Physics teacher.
CONSCIENCE CORNER
SARAH BOGASKI
THE ORIGIN OF THE CAP AND GOWN
Since it’s close to the end of the school year and the seniors are fi nally leaving,
I thought I’d dedicate this Conscience Corner to them.
The cap is said to go back to the Celts and their Druids. A Druid is a Celtic
priest. Within Celtic groups, only the priest wore capes with hoods to symbolize
their superiority. They were considered to have superior knowledge about herbs,
astrology, etc. The hood did not represent a way to hide their faces.
Back in 1321, the University of Coimbra declared that all Doctors and Bachelors
must wear gowns. This rule was very strict and an excess of unnecessary apparel
was forbidden by the 14 th century in some colleges. Not until the late 1800s were
colors assigned to certain areas of study. Apricot was for nursing, white for the liberal
arts, golden yellow for science, and so on.
Candyland is a Big Hit
Every year, the Mission Team puts
together a trivia night in order to benefi t
those in need. In the past, proceeds have
gone to the places like the Crisis Nursery.
This year, the Candyland themed trivia
night benefi ted the new neonatal intensive
care unit at Cardinal Glennon Children’s
Hospital. This event took place on Friday
March 28. Under the guidance of Father
Beighlie, the trivia night was a huge
success. Besides the actual trivia, the night
included raffl es, silent auction, door prizes,
and various other activities. Many of the
tables were fi lled with Trinity families and
friends. Mission team members include
The Shakespeare Festival of St.
Louis made their annual stop at Trinity
this spring, bringing with them one of their
most innovative shows to date. Unlike
past productions such as Temepest in a
Flash!, Soothsayin’ A Stylin’ Julius Caesar,
and Much a Doo-Wop About Nothing, (that
were all simply condensed works of William
Shakespeare placed in a different setting),
this year’s production, based on the Bard’s
Richard III, instead decided to focus on
character and the themes of the original
work.
Me and Richard 3 unfolded in a high
school as it was preparing to put on its own
production of Richard III. The characters
Mrs. Debbie Petrowske, the
spectators went to the gallery to have
This year’s volleyball team is small
but mighty. The team is upperclassmen
heavy with seniors Danny Schuettenburg,
Mike Kiefer, Jonathon Warneke, Corey
Fulhorst, Brian Sanfi llipo, Joe Burkard and
Mike Fitzmaurice; juniors Mark Barnhart and
Chris Lesure and rounding out the team is
Sophomore Jim Brogan and freshmen Tom
Barylski and Andrew Nicolay.
The year started off with a win
against University City, 2-1 and recently
they have also enjoyed a win against St.
John’s. Overall the team went 7-17 which
leaves room for improvement, but the
seniors worked very hard all season and
everyone has high hopes for next year.
stuttering junior named Reggie, who was
determined to be given the role of Richard
III (played by St. Louis native Michael B.
Perkins), and the female student who stood
between them (realistically performed by
actress Jen Theby). When the spirit of
Richard III (portrayed by popular St. Louis
Shakespeare actor, Robert A. Mitchell,
who is a familiar face to Trinity audiences)
appears, Reggie suddenly lives out his
own version of Richard III, complete with
betrayal, success, and personal demons
that ultimately cause Reggie to fail.
The Tragedy of King Richard the
Third will be performed in Forest Park from
May 21- June 15. Shows begin at 8:00 p.m.
every night (except Tuesdays). Admission
is free and the event is open to everyone.
