training progress; to maintenance engineers in the
form of diagnostics; and to accident investigators in
the event of an incident. This course will introduce
attendees to the concepts surrounding simple, lowcost
FDRs for small- to medium-sized helicopters, and
will demonstrate how to use data sets and simple
software tools to deliver significant safety and cost
benefits.
Ask the IS-BAO Auditor
March 6, 2013 || 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm || Safety Management
Instructor: Walter Kraujalis, president, AeronomX
Ever wonder how to comply with some of the
requirements of the International Standard for
Business Aircraft (IS-BAO) or whether your current
procedures are adequate? This is your opportunity
to get your questions answered and to hear what
other airmen are dealing with. The course will
include a brief discussion of current “gotchas” in
complying with the IS-BAO standards, followed by
an open forum to ask questions. There will also be
the opportunity to ask questions anonymously in
writing.
Breaking the Accident Chain:
FAA Case Scenario
March 6, 2013 || 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm || Safety Management
Instructors: Jim Slattery, chief pilot, Sandel Avionics;
and Jerry Henry, director of technical sales, Sandel
Avionics
This interactive course will define controlled flight
into terrain (CFIT) with the latest statistics and
challenges in regards to wire strikes, obstacles,
and terrain avoidance. Participants will be
guided through a real-world Federal Aviation
Administration CFIT case, using the latest helicopter
terrain awareness and warning (HTAWS) system
technology through a demo. All attendees will be
given a demo CD to reenact their own known CFIT
test scenarios with Sandel’s HeliTAWS technology.
The Business Case for Safety
March 6, 2013 || 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm || Safety Management
safety officer, Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation
Dr. Eherts will further the business case argument
for safety investments by discussing potential effects
on stock price and market capitalization in addition
to the recent advances in return on investment
(ROI) calculations for safety. He will present macro
case studies, followed by traditional cost-benefit
calculations for individual investments using the
ROHSEI tool but focusing on tool control system
advancements. Case studies and interactive Q&A will
reinforce the learning objectives.
Developing and Utilizing
Lead Indicators in SMS
March 5, 2013 || 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm || Safety Management
Instructor: Bryan Smith, safety program manager,
Airborne Law Enforcement Association
Traditional safety programs focus heavily on data
created after an accident has occurred, or “lag”
indicators. How can we create safety initiatives
that intercept accidents before they happen? This
class will utilize safety management system (SMS)
techniques that can create “lead” indicators that
allow safety managers to identify and intercept
potential accidents before they occur. These
techniques are especially helpful for small operators
with minimal incident history who otherwise must
use lag data from other sources.
Flight Risk Analysis Tools
March 5, 2013 || 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm || Safety Management
Instructor: Chris Fishell, helicopter operations safety
analyst, PRISM Solutions
This course will take an in-depth look at the
importance of developing and implementing a
comprehensive flight risk analysis program (FRAT).
We will examine what is included in a mature
FRAT program as well as tactics, techniques, and
procedures that will aid operators in developing
their programs. We will also discuss, incorporating
specific examples, why using a FRAT system is so
important for safe and efficient flight operations.
Maximizing HITS Wins the Game
