HELI‐EXPO:
The World of Vertical Aviation
Connect. HELI‐EXPO is where the world of vertical aviation connects.
More than 20,000 helicopter industry professionals will be in Las Vegas
March 4 through 7, 2013, for the largest helicopter exposition and trade
show. Some come to network with industry peers, looking for their next
company, vendor, or hire. Others keep abreast of industry developments
through HAI’s forums, town halls, or 14 committee meetings.
Engage. HELI‐EXPO is where vertical aviation means business. In 2013,
1.5 million square feet of the Las Vegas Convention Center will be filled
with everything related to helicopter aviation — from the latest and
greatest in avionics to the nuts and bolts of hardware and fasteners. The
HELI‐EXPO show floor is your most cost-effective way to visit multiple
suppliers, possible vendors, and the competition — all at the same time.
Succeed. HELI‐EXPO will help you reach the next level, no matter
where you are in your aviation career. HAI offers professional education
courses designed for rotorcraft professionals, as well as easy ways to
renew your inspection authorization certificate and gain professional
education credits. New in 2013 is the HAI Rotor Safety Challenge,
offering safety tools and techniques that you can apply back on the job
— and all free to HELI‐EXPO attendees and exhibitors. Add the Helicopter
Foundation International’s mentoring panels for students and the HAI
Job Fair, and you’ll see that at HELI-EXPO, the sky is the limit!
the HAI Rotor Safety Challenge. This program, developed in coordination
with the HAI Safety Committee, will include safety events, forums, and
short courses — all free to HELI-EXPO attendees and exhibitors.
In addition to the safety events HAI offers each year at HELI-EXPO,
including the Safety Symposium, Safety Committee Town Hall, Safety
Directors Forum, and International Helicopter Safety Team workshops,
the Rotor Safety Challenge will include more than 30 safety education
sessions, conveniently scheduled on show days, March 5 through 7.
At each Rotor Safety Challenge session, attendees will learn important
safety concepts and skills and discuss safety challenges facing the
international helicopter community. Whether a pilot, maintenance
technician, safety officer, manager, or someone serving a different role in
the helicopter industry, attendees will return to work with safety tools,
techniques, and practical applications specific to their jobs.
HELI-EXPO attendees can choose to attend the HAI Rotor Safety
Flight Operations
Aeronautical Knowledge vs.
What Pilots Should Know
March 6, 2013 || 10:00 am – 11:00 am || Flight Operations
Instructor: Scott Burgess, assistant professor,
Embry‐Riddle Aeronautical University
This presentation is a combination of practical
knowledge beyond the Helicopter Flying Handbook
and the research of the International Helicopter
Safety Team Analysis Team. This in-depth look
at aeronautical knowledge, decision making,
and understanding of limitations is ideal for all
experience levels. This presentation evolved from
extensive research for the industry publication, The
Reality of Aeronautical Knowledge: The Analysis
of Accident Reports Against What Aircrews Are
Supposed to Know, by the session instructor,
Scott Burgess.
CRM for the Single-Pilot Operator
March 5, 2013 || 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm || Flight Operations
Instructor: Chris Fishell, helicopter operations safety
analyst, PRISM Solutions
Crew resource management (CRM) is an
important part of safe aviation operations, but
is often overlooked in the single-pilot helicopter
environment. Far too often, the crew part of CRM
is the focus of most discussions, with not much
thought given to the resource management phase
of CRM. This course will discuss the identification
and utilization of all resources in the single-pilot
helicopter environment, and how the principles of
CRM can be appropriately utilized.
Enhanced Synthetic Vision Systems
March 6, 2013 || 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm || Flight Operations
Instructor: Stan Rose, director of safety,
Helicopter Association International
This presentation will familiarize the audience with
a new safety enhancement that is coming to the
helicopter world and to demonstrate the application
8
of this technology in air medicine, firefighting, and
law enforcement. Although we currently have nightvision
devices and dashboard-mounted synthetic
vision systems, this new version will add real-time
sensors (the enhancement) to a helmet-mounted
display. The resulting “view” will allow pilots to see
through all types of obstacles in the degraded visual
environment, including fog, snow, dust, and clouds.
NextGen Flight Deck Technology
for Runway Incursions
March 5, 2013 || 8:30 am – 9:30 am || Flight Operations
Instructor: Robert Joslin, chief scientific and technical
advisor for flight deck technology, Federal Aviation
Administration
This course will analyze the effectiveness of current
safety controls for reducing runway incursions,
consider precedents from regulation-based
technological controls, and explore NextGen runway
helicopters can also utilize low-level IFR routes,
extending the IFR season. Lower minimums and
low-level routes are different than pilots are used
to, however. To operate them safely requires special
planning, training, and operations.
March 5, 2013 || 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm || Safety Culture/Lead.
Instructors: Eileen Frazer, executive director, CAMTS;
and Dudley Smith, treasurer, CAMTS
One key to the successful implementation of a safety
management system is to attain a “just culture”
reporting environment within organizations. A
“just culture” is an atmosphere of trust in which
people are encouraged to provide essential safetyrelated
information — and where a line is drawn
between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. The
effectiveness of a safety culture depends on how
organizations handle blame and punishment.
safety in those arenas is significant. Some aspects of
these established systems make it difficult for smaller
businesses or private operators to implement. This
course will offer an overview of new International
Helicopter Safety Team SMS programs and
information that will allow small operations to reap
the same safety benefits large operators have come
to enjoy.
Using a System Description to
Understand Your Risk
March 5, 2013 || 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm || Safety Management
Instructor: Sonya Tietjen, principal, Safety Management
Systems, Gael Ltd.; Founding Member, Global
Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring Steering Group
The International Civil Aviation Organization
describes the system description as “the first
prerequisite” to developing a safety management
system (SMS), yet most organizations jump straight
to the gap analysis as the starting point of their SMS
implementation. So what is a system description, and
what are the benefits of creating one? Following
a brief introduction, a hands-on exercise will
create a simple system description. The result will
demonstrate the methods for mapping an operation
and the interfaces between departments and service
providers. The goal is to focus on hazards and a
systemic approach to managing risk.
Getting to HELI‐EXPO 2013
Airport
McCarran International Airport (LAS) is located four miles (10 minutes)
from the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC). Taxi fare from LAS to the
LVCC will cost approximately $20.
LVCC Parking
The LVCC has ample parking; event parking is $10.00 per day with
in‐and‐out privileges. The Silver Lot is located at the main entrance at
3150 Paradise Road.
Las Vegas Monorail
The Las Vegas Monorail
takes you from one end
of the world-famous Las
Vegas Strip to the other
— with seven stops in
total — in just 15 minutes.
Trains run from 7 am
until 2 am, Monday through Thursday, and from 7 am until 3 am, Friday
through Sunday. Prices range from $5 for a single-ride ticket to $28 for a
three‐day pass. For more information or to purchase tickets online, visit
lvmonorail.com.
Shuttle Buses
HAI will provide complimentary shuttle service between the LVCC and
hotels within the HELI‐EXPO 2013 housing block (see page 19 for
listing) from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm on the show days of March 5–7.
Taxis
Taxis are easiest to obtain from hotel lobbies. If you want to call ahead,
Frias Transportation Management offers service from five cab companies
with the convenience of one number: 702‐888‐4888. Visit lvcabs.com to
estimate costs between locations.
Visas for International Attendees
If you already have a U.S. visa, please check
the expiration date to make sure your
visa will not expire before or during your
travel dates.
If you do not possess a U.S. visa, you may
need a visa to enter the United States. The
following U.S. State Department website can
help determine whether or not a visa is required: http://travel.state.gov/
visa/visa_1750.html.
If you should require a visa, contact the U.S. embassy consulate
section in your country to determine visa processing times, or visit
the “Visa Wait Times for Interview Appointment” page of the U.S.
State Department website (http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/wait/
wait_4638.html). Advance travel planning is important, because visa
applications are subject to a greater degree of scrutiny than in the past.
To assist in your visa application, you may request a letter of invitation
to attend HELI‐EXPO 2013. Please complete the “letter of invitation”
form available online, under the International Travel/Visa heading of
the HELI‐EXPO 2013 website at rotor.com/heliexpo. A letter of invitation
does not guarantee the issuance of a visa. The decision to issue a visa
is the judgment of the local U.S. embassy or consulate. HAI is unable to
assist with actual visa processing. HAI cannot provide financial support
for travel, registration fees, or local expenses.
Children
and Strollers
Registration for
children age 14
and under is
free. However,
children must
wear a youth
badge, which
can be be picked up in Attendee
Registration on site. All children
must be accompanied by
an adult.
Children are only permitted
inside the exhibit hall during
show hours; no one under the
age of 18 is allowed on the show
floor during move-in/move-out
times. If you have any questions,
see show management.
The nature of displays at
HELI‐EXPO can cause people to
look up, rather than below the
waist level in front of them or
coming around a corner. For this
reason, HAI has a strict policy
concerning child/infant strollers.
Strollers will not be allowed into
the exhibit hall at any time. No
exceptions will be made. Strollers
must be left at the Bag/Coat
Check area.
Aviation maintenance technicians who use
effective troubleshooting techniques save their
organizations significant financial resources. By
addressing maintenance problems in a thoughtful
and systematic manner, technicians reduce wasteful
spending on parts, the amount of time aircraft spend
in the shop (and not in the air), and hours of labor
required for repairs, all during a time of critical
staff shortages.
Attendees will learn —
• Key considerations and practical tools for
troubleshooting
• How to effectively solve maintenance problems,
using the four-step troubleshooting process
• The cost of failing to troubleshoot.
technical proficiency that managers must maintain
by offering an in-depth regulatory review.
At the conclusion of the course, attendees will —
• Learn management principles and techniques
• Gain a better understanding of different
types of costs and how to control them
• Learn aspects of financial management
and accounting and the importance of
budgets — and how to develop them
• Refresh their knowledge of relevant Federal
Flying in the mountains is a different experience
from flying in any other environment. Reduced
engine power, decreased lift, hypoxia, terrain, and
treacherous winds and weather all pose serious
challenges to pilots. This ground school will provide
attendees with the fundamental and advanced
concepts necessary to fly safely in the mountain and
high-altitude environment.
At the conclusion of the course, attendees will —
• Understand mountain flying concepts and
techniques
• Know the unique hazards faced when
operating in this environment because
of terrain, altitude, and airflow
• Be able to implement risk management strategies.
