considered the “backbone” of the armed services.

Comprising 14.3% of the total strength, the Marine
Corps is the smallest branch of the Armed
Forces (excluding the Coast Guard). For the purpose
of maintaining a rapidly deployable, quick
reaction force at the initiation of an international
conflict or disaster, a small, mobile body
of well maintained troops is crucial.
In the commissioned officer grades, personnel
at the rank of Captain (O-3) comprise the bulk
of the population. Company grade officers
(2NDLT - CAPT) account for 60% of the distribution.
