easy task. With that being said, congratulations to our winner: The Zone/Single Marine Program. Your
SAFETY CORNER
FOUL WEATHER DRIVING
Winter has arrived in our desert community
and with it, the occasional storm. Bad
weather creates added driving hazards.
When travelling in adverse conditions,
keep in mind that rain, snow and ice
make roads slippery and can reduce tire
traction. A driver’s visibility is reduced
and many drivers become tense and
worried, which may make them drive
less safely. Prepare for bad weather by
taking the following precautions before
putting the key into the ignition: Clean off
headlights regularly to improve visibility.
Check periodically to make sure no bulbs
are burned out. Replace windshield wiper
blades; they’re not effective when they’re
worn. Check tire condition and inflation.
Worn tires can’t grip the road and may
blow out. Replace them. Tire pressure falls
with the temperature. Check tires before
driving and inflate them to manufacture’s
recommended level.
If heading to a colder climate, be sure
to pack the following in your vehicle
emergency kit:
• Spill proof container of sand or cat litter
• Ice scraper, snow brush and small
folding shovel
• Blanket (to keep warm while waiting
for help after a breakdown)
Once you’re on the road, driving safely
becomes key, especially in the rain. The
first step is to slow down. Reduce speed
and stay at least four seconds (not the
usual two) behind the car in front of you.
Use windshield wipers and headlights,
not parking lights, even during the day.
Use your vehicle’s defroster if the inside
windows steam up. Be aware that roads
are most slippery in light rain or when
rain first starts as the mixture of rain with
oil and dirt on the road makes it slippery.
Slow down for large puddles, which can
reduce braking ability. As you approach
the puddle, drive through slowly, tapping
the brakes. Test the brakes once you’re
through, after checking that no one is close
behind. Avoid hydroplaning (tires driving
on the water, not the road) in puddles. If
you start to lose control, take your foot
off the gas. Don’t brake suddenly. As you
drive, be aware of passing trucks; their
spray could temporarily limit your ability
to see. Finally, be prepared to respond
quickly if other drivers lose control.
By following these tips, you will help
ensure not only your own safety, but also
the safety of those driving near you. Safe
driving!

Harry Sherman
Former Budget Officer, Finance Division
If the MCCS Finance Division had a yearbook, Harry Sherman would
surely have been voted “Division Cut-Up.” The September Mid-Level
Employee of the Month and former MCCS budget officer lives by the
mantra that the workplace is meant to be enjoyed.
“I believe in having fun and enjoying the work while making it
enjoyable for others,” Harry said. “When people get to laugh; when
people get to socialize at work and yet still accomplish their work,
people look forward to coming to work.”
Having fun has never meant that the work didn’t get done. Harry’s
work ethic during his 30 years in the Marine Corps, six years with
MCCS Barstow and another seven years with MCCS Twentynine Palms
would exhaust most average employees just thinking about it. While in
Barstow, Harry filled the billets of business operations officer, Semper
Fit officer, Food & Hospitality director and acting chief financial officer
for accounting and budget, all at the same time. When he left to come to
Twentynine Palms, four people were hired to replace him. As the MCCS
budget officer, Harry’s job went far beyond budgeting and signing
purchase orders. “The CFO and myself, we’d get into the programs and
activities,” he explained adding, “Trying to help out the programs in
turn helps out the Marines and their families, which accomplishes our
mission.” Harry works to accomplish that same mission through his
new position as the deputy comptroller for the Robert E. Bush Naval
Hospital.
There’s much more to Harry than work though. When he’s not sifting
through financial facts and figures, Harry is inseparable from his RV.
In fact, each work week he and his wife drive their faithful 40-footer to
Twentynine Palms from their house in Hemet and park it at the MCCS
Twilight Dunes RV Park. Whenever they have a few weeks of vacation
saved up, Harry and his wife load up the RV, often packing in one or
more of their three grandchildren, and set off for a new adventure. The
Grand Canyon, California coast, Yellowstone…one visit is never enough.
“The benefit of having your RV is you can stop anytime you want;
your motel is right there with you.” He added, “If you have two weeks,
you can fly into someplace, you can see it, but you don’t really get to feel
it, you don’t get to live it.”
After retirement, the Shermans are looking forward to calling their RV
“home,” heading up the Alaskan Highway for a few months and then
spending their time savoring the sights of our beautiful United States.
Their dream retirement is still a few years down the road though.
Until then, Harry is looking forward to keeping his new coworkers at
the Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital cracking up as he works to keep
quality of life programming available for Twentynine Palms’ military
community.
Clyde Valentine
Audit Clerk, 7 Day Store
I was able to set up a data system consolidating records to three locations,
enabling record retrieval faster and easier. Two years later, I moved
to a Civil Service position at the MCCS Intramural Sports office before
Why?
A. It is an enjoying thing to reap the rewards when going above and
beyond when doing your own work and assisting others. I have created
tracking data bases for several sections of MCCS. Not only at Outdoor
Adventures, but I have helped the Golf Course with one and just
recently done one for Fields and Grounds.
Q. What are your favorite things to do in the local area?
A. I have been shooting pool in the area for 24 years, starting local
leagues and participating in local and out of state tournaments. Driving
through the National Park and taking my 18-year-old Pekingnese for
rides. She’s gotten spoiled sitting on my wife’s lap on a raised cushion
to look out the window.
Q. What do you do when not working for MCCS?
A. I’m setting up a home business now; this is taking a lot of my time.
Q. Do you have a word of advice for fellow employees wanting to excel?
A. Do the best you can at whatever you do.
B. Respect yourself, your coworkers and management.
C. Smile, laugh out loud…you’ll live longer.
“A”…I do this every day. “B”…I try to do this every day. “C”…I don’t do this
enough but I think it’s a winning combination.
Find Freedom from Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is an epidemic in our society. In fact, one in
every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by
an intimate partner each year. Historically, females have been most
often victimized by someone they know. Females between the
ages of 20 and 24 are at a greater risk of non-fatal intimate partner
violence. Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to
police.
CHILD VICTIMS
Children who witness violence between parents/caretakers are
the strongest risk factor for transmitting violent behavior from one
generation to the next. In fact, boys are twice as likely to abuse their
own partners and children when they become adults. Thirty to 60
percent of perpetrators of intimate partner violence will also abuse
children in the household.
HOMICIDE AND INJURY
Almost one in every three of female homicide victims that are
reported in police records are killed by an intimate partner. In 70 to
80 percent of intimate partner homicides, no matter which partner
was killed, the man physically abused the woman before the murder.
ECONOMIC IMPACT
Intimate partner violence results in more than 18.5 million mental
health visits each year. The cost of intimate partner violence
exceeds $5.8 billion each year; approximately $4.1 billion of which
is for direct medical and mental health services. There are 16,000
homicides and $2.2 million (medically treated) injuries due to
intimate partner violence annually which costs $37 billion.
These facts may be grim, but you don’t need to become just
another statistic. Choose to live free from domestic violence. If
you are a victim of domestic violence, MCCS is here to help. The
Family Advocacy Program offers counseling services, intervention
programs, victim advocates and more. Our staff is available to help
you break free from the cycle of domestic violence.
Influenza
Flu season is upon us. One of the best precautions for avoiding this
year’s bug is to be informed. Our Q & A will better prepare you for
protecting yourself against influenza.
What Is Influenza?
Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious disease that is
caused by the influenza virus. It attacks the respiratory tract in
humans (nose, throat and lungs). Influenza usually comes on suddenly
and may include such symptoms as fever, headache, tiredness
(can be extreme), dry cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body
aches.
Why get a flu vaccination?
Each year thousands of people die from seasonal influenza and even
more require hospitalization. By getting vaccinated, you can protect
yourself from influenza and may also avoid spreading influenza to
others. It takes up to two weeks for protection to develop after the
shot. Protection lasts about a year.
Who needs the flu vaccine?
All people 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine. Tell
your health care provider if you have any severe allergies. Children
who are getting the flu vaccine for the first time need a booster shot
in six weeks.
What types of influenza vaccine are available?
1. Inactivated (killed) vaccine, or the “flu shot” is given by injection
into the muscle.
2. Live, attenuated (weakened) influenza vaccine is sprayed into the
nostrils.
What can I do to avoid the flu?
Protect yourself and those around you by practicing proper hygiene.
Always cough or sneeze into a tissue or the crook of your elbow,
never into your hands. Wash your hands often and avoid putting
them near your mouth or nose. Pick up a bottle of hand sanitizer
at the Main Exchange for those times when soap and water isn’t
immediately available. Fend off the flu this season and help keep our
workplace healthy!
