Annual Conference in Denver Hits High Note
with Sonographers, Educators, Students

Walking around the Exhibit Hall at the
Colorado Convention Center during its opening
night, Juli Gwen-Stewart, RDMS, RVT, of
Anchorage, Alaska, sounded like a kid in a
candy shop: “This is the place to come for the
newest and the bestest. It’s a dream world for
sonographers.”
Gwen-Stewart said she tries to attend the
annual SDMS conference every year to
network with colleagues, see what’s new in
ultrasound equipment and textbooks, learn
the latest in scanning techniques, and earn
CMEs.
She also comes to have some fun, she said,
and to see old friends such as Joan Baker,
MSR, RDMS, RDCS, FSDMS, who was her
instructor when she was a sonography student
in Washington.
When Gwen-Stewart and Baker caught up at
Sound Ergonomics’ booth in the Exhibit Hall,
it was fun and informative for both. Gwen-
Stewart was particularly intrigued by the new
vascular ultrasound ergonomic table Baker’s
company was demonstrating.
As Baker told Gwen-Stewart, “We’re really, really
excited about this family of ultrasound beds that
we’ve created with Oakworks Medical because
we’re trying to address all the ergonomic issues
in sonography… We have to work together

to solve this growing problem of work-related
musculoskeletal injuries among sonographers.”
Many of the nearly 1,000 attendees who were at the
2010 Annual Conference agreed it was well worth
their time and effort to travel to Denver for the four
days of the event.
Sitting in the Exhibit Hall late on Friday, a first-time
attendee, Christine Larivee, RDMS, of Cochrane,
Ontario, said: “It’s very impressive. The tutorials are
wonderful, the speakers are engaging, and exhibits
are informative.”
Living and working eight hours north of Toronto,
Larivee said it’s hard for her to get CMEs (other
than online.) Also, she said, working in a busy twoperson
department it’s hard for her to meet other
sonographers or even take the time to do so.
Coming to Denver was great, she said, because
“when you’re here, you’re talking with colleagues and
discussing circumstances of cases and that’s huge …
It’s so important to have that networking.”
Samantha Smith, a second-year student at Valencia
Community College in Orlando, Fla., came with seven
classmates and their instructor. “We came to see the
latest technology and learn from professionals. We
also want to get to know other students,” she said.
Smith said she wasn’t worried about finding a
placement when she graduates, but her classmate,
Tiffany Burgess, said, “The thought crossed my mind
to look for jobs while we’re here.”
Another student, Melanie Frisbee of Dayton, Ohio,
said she came hoping the exposure to the four tracts
– abdomen, OB/GYN, vascular and cardiac – would
help her when it came time to choosing her specialty.
A stay-at-home mom who has a bachelor’s degree
in human resources, Frisbee enrolled in Kettering
College of Medical Art’s sonography program to

pursue a second career. “Kettering prepares its
students for all four modalities so that’s why I haven’t
decided yet,” she said, adding that she’s leaning
toward echo and fetal brain imaging.
Many of the tutorials on the conference program
interested her, she said, and she was sure before
it was over on Sunday, she would see or hear
something that will make her decision a little easier.
Kelvin Paulsen, RDMS, RDCS, RVT, clinical
coordinator at Kettering who teaches physics, said he
has come to the annual conference every year for the
last five years largely to network with his peers.
“You get good information about how people are
doing things differently than you are and in our
profession there’s not enough sharing of ideas for
teaching methods, course materials, things like that.
It’s really beneficial. Hearing what others are doing
really motivates you to improve what you teach and
how you teach it.”
The push today, he said, is away from PowerPoints
and more toward interactive learning – direct student
contact. Paulsen said he was hoping to get some

ideas of how to do that with physics, not a subject
that easily lends itself to interactive learning.
The conference also included presentations by
American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
(ARDMS) staff who presented updates on its
credentialing examinations, which Paulsen said, were
helpful for him and his students who soon will be
taking the tests.
Cassie Woltemath of Lincoln, Neb., a second-year
student, came with her whole class and instructors.
Much of the information presented in the tutorials
helped “cement in my mind what we’re learning in
class and in clinical experiences,” she said.
Also, she said, attending and participating in SDMS
activities “looks good on your resume when you’re
trying to get a job. It shows your interest” in staying
current and active in the field.
Michelle Handfield, RDMS, of Wabamon, Alberta,
west of Edmonton, Canada, said she found the
speakers, many who are luminaries in their respective
fields, to be very motivating. “I work at a major
hospital,” she said, “and you want to keep up your
skills and knowledge and learn new innovations in
sonography and you can do that all in one place if you
come to the annual conference.”
Handfield said she also was looking for information
on the ergonomic issues that plague sonographers.
“In one of the sessions, the speaker pointed out that
84 percent of us will suffer ergonomic issues from
scanning,” she said. It’s eye-opening and she’s eager
to learn what she can do to prevent injuries that could
shorten her career.
Bill Phillips of Sound Decision for Imaging based in
Sammamish, Wash., which provides probe testing
equipment, was exhibiting for the first time.
Phillips said he came because he’s seen a shift in the
industry to more quality control and he found many

attendees who were very interested in his product.
Whenever the Exhibit Hall was open, he was busy, he
said, explaining to them how his equipment works
and how it helps imaging facilities meet the American
College of Radiology’s quality standards that were
updated in October 2009.
Past SDMS president Laurinda S. Andrist, MBA,
RDMS, RDCS, FSDMS, Director of Operations and
Compliance for Oregon Imaging Centers in Eugene,
had missed a few conferences while earning her MBA
and starting a new job, but she was thrilled to be
back.
At the opening reception for the Exhibit Hall, she
said, she couldn’t go more than a few feet without
running into someone she hadn’t seen for a while. “It
was really great to see everybody and see how the
organization continues to grow and move forward,”
Andrist said.
Andrist remembers when she first joined the board
and everyone thought that 10 percent growth in
membership “was reaching for the moon and the
stars. To hear SDMS President Charlotte Henningsen,
MS, RT, RDMS, say in her welcome address that we
have 22,500 members,” is just so wonderful, she
said.
Diane M. Kawamura, Ph.D., RT(R), RDMS, a professor
at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, a former
President of SDMS, and a former chair of the ARDMS
Board of Directors, has been to every SDMS annual
conference since they began in 1984.
She already has next year’s meeting in Atlanta
(Sept. 22-25) on her calendar. “To come here and to
continue renewing relationships is so important,” she
said. “I have made so many friends over the years
and I enjoy the opportunity to visit with them and to
see the changes in the profession that have been so
profound.”

Kawamura said she also loves how the conference
has progressed from very basic presentations to
those that are in-depth. She also loves how the
conference, which has grown considerably, continues
to meet the different needs of everyone in the
sonography community – students, educators,
practicing sonographers and vendors.

“We’re part of the SDMS team and the game is going
well,” Spitz told her enthusiastic audience of several
hundred. “But it’s going to take partnerships and
collaboration to take us where we’re going….Valuable
partnerships will enhance your identity.”
Also, Spitz said, “when we’re all pushing in the same
direction, it’s hard to turn us down….United we stand.
Together we can learn and grow.”
There was time for fun, too. After the awards dinner
honoring supporters, new SDMS Fellow inductees,
and winners of awards and the Poster Presentation
competitions, it was the Monster Mash, where prizes
Friday morning, best-selling author and successful
business consultant, Peter Sheahan delivered an
arousing keynote presentation, inspiring his listeners
to “constantly stay on the edge of finding better ways
to do what we (sonographers) do.” He urged his
audience to “understand how important the patient
experience is” and to do all that they can to make
that experience the best it can be.

where everyone found SDMS board members,
colleagues, instructors and students mixing it up and
having old-fashioned fun.
The participants left Denver looking forward to the
next conference at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta and
wondering what the conference committee could do
to top this year’s – knowing that it always finds a way.

Sheahan was followed by Jean Lea Spitz, MPH,
RDMS, FSDMS, Program Director, NTQR, Maternal
Fetal Medicine Foundation, who delivered the
Stephen M. McLaughlin Memorial Lectureship about
the need for professional partnerships in sonography
practice. The lecture is named for McLaughlin, a
former SDMS President, who lost his battle with brain
cancer in 2005. The lecture has been a part of the
annual conference since 2006.

is the first licensed
sonographer in the
state of Oregon.
Oregon is the second
state to require
sonographers to be
licensed – New Mexico
was the first, adopting
its licensure law in
2009.
The new law in Oregon took effect July 1, 2010,
although sonographers will have until 2014 to be
licensed.
Andrist, who is now Director of Operations and
Compliance for Oregon Imaging Centers in Eugene,
was instrumental in getting the licensing law passed
in Oregon. She and fellow SDMS member Frank
Krause, BS, RDCS, FASE, Clinical Imaging Manager
for Providence Heart Clinic in Portland, served on the
working group that helped draft the administrative
rules to implement the legislation, which also
includes licensing technologists who perform nuclear
medicine and magnetic resonance imaging studies.
“I was invited to be on the committee because of
my involvement in sonography and SDMS,” explains
Andrist, who because of repetitive strain injuries
doesn’t scan patients much anymore. “Also, as
director of clinical operations (at the time) for a fivesite
multi-modality radiology outpatient service I had
familiarity with not only sonography but the other
imaging modalities as well.”
To obtain her sonography license, Andrist had to pay
a prorated fee and submit her ARDMS credentials to
the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging. “The state of
Oregon chose to recognize ARDMS, ARRT, and CCI
credentials because it didn’t want to create its own
licensing requirements and reinvent the wheel,” she
says.
Andrist paid a prorated amount for her license
because the annual fee renews on the applicant’s
birthday and Andrist’s is in April.
As a thank-you for all her hard work, Andrist was
supposed to be invited to the bill signing. But the
governor signed a number of bills at once and didn’t
hold an official signing ceremony.
As a “consolation prize,” Andrist was promised that
her license would be the first the state issued for
sonographers.
When the state issued her license, which hangs in
her office, it didn’t say number one on it, and Andrist
was a bit disappointed. But then she learned that
she is number one – it’s just that the licenses aren’t
numbered that way. The state sent her a list of
licensees (with confidential information blacked out)
and she confirmed she was at the top.
While Andrist is happy about the licensing and
Oregon’s being one of two states to require
sonographers to be licensed, she would rather
Congress pass the CARE (Consistency, Accuracy,
Responsibility, and Excellence in Medical Imaging
and Radiation Therapy) bill, making credentialing for
practicing sonographers a national standard.
It was a long and hard battle in Oregon, she says,
“and it’s just too hard and too expensive to repeat it
another 48 times.”
The CARE bill, which SDMS strongly supports, stands
its best chance of passing since work on it began
more than 10 years ago. When Congress returns after
the November election, it may become law.

What inspired you to make a career of
sonography?
Being trained in the radiology field initially, this
ultrasound machine “appeared” in our department
one day! It was a UNIRAD machine. (Memory lane
all over again!)
The supervisor asked, “Who wants to try their hands
at this machine?” I jumped at the opportunity and
that day, in 1976, would be the maiden voyage of my
ultrasound career!
Did you have a memorable role model/teacher?
Who was it?
My first “teacher” was a doctor named Ted Lyons
who had an ultrasound program based at the
University Of Winnepeg/Manitoba, Canada.
Dr. Lyons was more excited about this field of
sonography than one can even imagine. The
passion and energy he resonated was infectious!
I left his program knowing I had made a decision
I would never regret…and enjoy an on-going
friendship with Dr. Lyons to this day!
That led me right into a direct path with Dr. Lennard
Greenbaum, a radiologist, and his sonographer Kay
Neet. I was so very fortunate to continue training
under their guidance for the next three years. He
and Kay are my “heroes.” They tolerated all my
crazy questions and the hundreds of imaginary
masses I created with the sound waves from my
ultrasound machine.
(Like the ginormous pancreatic pseudocyst I found...
that was in reality an enlarged heart in a patient with
CHF...before real time now!) Anytime I would inquire
about some finding on an exam, Dr. G would say,
“You know, that is a good question!? Look it up and
let me know!”
Talk about a fabulous way to learn...well, that’s it!
(Like... is “ginormous” really a word?!”)
What was the most significant advance in
technology that you have directly experienced?
While working with Dr. Greenbaum and Kay came
the most exciting change in sonography! They
called it “REAL TIME!” Up to that point, I was
working with ROHE equipment. (Anyone remember
that machine?) You were basically an artist and
“composed” every single diagnostic view, one
soundwave at a time, as though you had a brush
and pallet in your hand instead of a probe. So “realtime”
ultrasound was so unbelievable! And as we
all know this was only the beginning of such exciting
technical advances to come down our path of this
career in sonography! To keep up with it all was
next to impossible...but so much fun. The rest is
history! …Color flow/ Doppler/ power imaging, etc.,
etc …It is still an ongoing process as we speak!
What changes do you predict in the immediate
future?
Here is hoping that one of the ultrasound
manufacturers designs a cordless probe one day!
AND an ultrasound machine that would be built into
the wall at the patient hospital bedside so we, the
sonographers, would just “show up” and be part of
the diagnostic team doing “rounds.”
And a machine that will have that first wonderful cup
of coffee ready when we walk in the door
every morning…or put in your own special latte
order! (Just a dream! I would be happy to just get a
raise these days! )
What advice would you give to students/ future
sonographers?
I have also had the pleasure of being an instructor
with various sonography students.

It is a career that gives back to you every day as I
tell my pupils. You will want to know your patient like
you know yourself. Your goal becomes finding that
answer to their medical issue. Sometimes you are
able to gain the information successfully for their
physician. Sometimes you even find pathology that
was not suspected. You will have made significant
progress in that patient’s prognosis. It is just a feelgood
job. You can’t beat it!
Become involved with the SDMS! How fortunate
we sonographers are to have this organization to
SDMS News Wave October 2010 9
offer needed support in this profession for us! They
have become our advocate from the legal issues in
Washington to intervention with our administrators
on a local level at our jobs…….the multitude of
benefits connected with the SDMS membership are
unequaled!
As the month of October comes to an end now,
here’s knowing Medical Ultrasound Awareness
Month was appreciated by all of us. We so deserve
this recognition.

2011 SDMS Foundation Grant and Scholarship
Program Information Now Available
The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography
(SDMS) Foundation’s Board of Directors is pleased
to announce its 2011 SDMS Foundation Grant
and Scholarship Programs. The SDMS Foundation
is committed to providing support to sonography
students, practicing sonographers, the medical
community, and the general public related to
diagnostic medical sonography. Information about the

Grants
The 2011 SDMS Foundation
Sonography Certification
Examination Grant
Program provides grants
to deserving sonography
students and sonographers
who successfully complete
a sonography certification
examination after being
approved for a grant (paid as
reimbursement). The $250
grant may be used for examination fees, travel to
examination site, or study materials. Grant recipients
also receive a free SDMS National Certification
Examination Review study guide to help them prepare
for the certification examination. To better ensure
availability of grant funds throughout the year and to
ensure more SDMS members are aided by the grant
program, the 2011 SDMS Foundation Sonography
Certification Examination Grant Program will have two
application periods (January 1 – June 30 and July 1
– December 31). Only one certification examination
grant will be awarded to each recipient in the 2011
calendar year. Please note that grants funds are
limited so be sure to apply early in either application
period.
The Foundation’s 2011
SDMS Annual Conference
Grant Program provides
financial assistance
to sonographers and
students who plan to
attend the 2011 SDMS Annual Conference in Atlanta,
Georgia, September 22-25, 2011. Grants may be
used for any expense incurred by the applicant
related to participating in the 2011 SDMS Annual
Conference (e.g., registration, travel, hotel, meals,
etc.). Each grant is $500 for sonographers or $250
for students (who also receive discounted conference
registration rates). Please note that the 2011 SDMS
Annual Conference Grant application period is earlier
because the conference dates are a few weeks
earlier than in the past. Applications will be accepted
between May 1 and June 30, 2011 (Please note that
applications received before May 1 or after June 30
will not be considered.)
SDMS Foundation Sonography Student
Scholarship Program
The 2011 SDMS Foundation Sonography Student
Scholarship Program provides a $2,500 scholarship
to a deserving sonography student who has been
accepted or is currently enrolled in a 2011 term
(semester, quarter, or certificate) in an educational
program in diagnostic medical sonography or
cardiovascular technology which has been accredited
by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Educational Programs (CAAHEP). Two (2) sonography
scholarships will be awarded in 2011. Scholarships
can be used for tuition, books, or educational fees.
The application deadline for the Sonography Student
Scholarship Program is either
December 31, 2010 or
June 30, 2011 (Both

Scholarship Program
The 2011 SDMS
Foundation Sonographer
Advanced Degree
Scholarship Program awards a $2,500 scholarship to
a deserving sonographer who has a minimum of two
(2) years full-time sonography experience and has
been accepted or is currently enrolled in a 2011 term
(semester or quarter) in an advanced sonographyrelated
degree program (including, but not limited to,
degrees in management, health, education, etc.). The
scholarship applicant may be seeking a bachelor’s,
master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited
institution recognized by the U.S. Department of
Education. Scholarship monies can be used for
tuition, books, or educational fees. The Sonographer
Advanced Degree Scholarship Program Scholarship
deadline is June 30, 2011.
General Eligibility
Any current SDMS member in good standing
(excluding Corporate/Business/Institution or
Supporting categories) may apply for SDMS
Foundation grants or scholarships. However,
scholarships can only be awarded for attendance
at educational institutions in the United States.
Note: You must be a current SDMS member in
good standing at the time of application, award
notification and grant and/or scholarship payment.
To be considered for a SDMS Foundation grant or
scholarship, the SDMS member must complete and
submit an application by the applicable deadline.
The application must be completed fully, including
required signature(s), to be accepted for SDMS
Foundation consideration. Generally, grants and
scholarships are considered based upon availability
of funds, date received, and a demonstrated need.
Note: Only one SDMS Foundation grant (i.e., one
certification examination grant OR one Annual
Conference grant) and one scholarship may be
awarded to an individual in a calendar year.
Giving Back to YOUR Profession
SDMS Foundation grants and scholarships are made
possible by donations from SDMS members and
the sonography community. One hundred percent of
your individual donation goes to support the SDMS
Foundation’s programs. Please consider making
