Season
The abundance of depth present on the Husky roster should
be a key ingredient in UConn’s success this season
Depth, depth and more depth mark this year’s edition of
the University of Connecticut men’s track and field team. A
blend of proven upperclassmen and talented freshmen look to
defend the 2006 BIG EAST Indoor Championship, as well as
capture the outdoor championship on home turf
Veteran head coach Greg Roy begins his 22nd year with a
staff of associate head coach Ted Gibbons and assistant coach
Rich Miller, a trio that has worked together for the last 15
years. While there are no returning All-Americans on this
year’s squad, the roster still includes an abundance of athletes
with proven credentials. Highlighting this year’s squad
includes three BIG EAST champs, 25 BIG EAST scorers and a
Erik Thunberg
veteran group of 22 juniors and seniors to go with a talented
group of 25 freshmen. In addition, some events boast as many
as four BIG EAST scorers.
SPRINTS AND HURDLES
Sean Berg
All-BIG EAST performers abound as the Huskies
attempt to blend their veterans with some talented newcomers.
BIG EAST 110-meter high hurdles champion Basil
Campbell was also runner-up in the indoor 200-meter dash,
and narrowly missed an NCAA berth in 2006 with his personal
record of 21.12. Third in the indoors 60-meter dash,
senior Kel Ndu just missed a championship in the 100-meter
outdoors with his 2nd place finish. Senior Edwin Campbell
looks to rebound from a disappointing junior year after earning
All-Conference accolades in the 400-meter dash (3rd
- 47.54) as a sophomore. Verrol Jackson (high hurdles, IH)
and Anthony Pomo (60-meter, 100-meter) provide experienced
depth, while newcomers Chris Muvdi and Anthony
Burris, a pair of state champions in their respective events,
look to provide an immediate impact. Muvdi was the
Pennsylvania state 100-meter champion while Burris earned
a Connecticut state championship in the 55-meter high hurdles.
A wild card could be freshman Brad Kanuch, a starting
wide receiver on the Huskies football team. Kanuch was a
Pennsylvania State Champion in the triple jump and 200-
meter dash in 2005.
JUMPS
is junior Steve Iannaccone (1000-meter-2:25.98, 800-meter-
1:50.06) with backup from sophomore Brian Gagnon (800-
meter-1:51.32) and junior Max Feldman (1500-meter-3:45).
An unproven but talented group of backups, Kyle Eckman,
Brian Watrous, Mike DuPaul, Daren Myers, Andrew Smith
and Mike Rutt could contribute with an accelerated maturation
process.
Senior Jake Radzevich bids to become a BIG EAST
Champion for the first time after having been All-BIG EAST
four times in the pole vault (two-time runner-up, twice finished
in 3rd place) and boasts a personal record of 17 feet.
Radzevich is joined by senior and All-BIG EAST performer
Jonas Tepaske (4.88 meters), while decathlete Sean Berg and
freshman Bryan Corley look to add depth to the event. Ellis
Gaulden looks to defend his 2006 indoor high jump championship
(6’11 ½ ), while senior Daniel Hutcherson looks
to regain the form that made him a BIG EAST Champion as
a freshman (6’11 ¾). Marquis Thomas adds depth to what
arguably is the deepest event in the program. BIG EAST
scorers abound in the long
jump as sophomores Matt
Tift (4th), Pomo (8th) and
Gaulden (2nd -2005) join
junior Museveni Akanno
(8th – 2005) as past scorers
in the event. Akanno is
the team leader in the triple
jump (14.31 meters), but will
face a challenge from Rene
Coleman, Tyrone Faverey
and Jamaal Smith, a trio of
talented freshmen. Smith
and Coleman will bolster an
already deep long jump event.
Faverey, the Pennsylvania
State high jump champion
with a distance of 6’10 ½”,
could contend for the top
spot in the high jump.
MULTI EVENTS
NCAA decathlon qualifier
Sean Berg (7178 points)
looks to notch a BIG EAST
Championship following a
pair of 2nd place finishes in the 2006 heptathlon and decathlon.
Berg leads a group of young veterans, all BIG EAST scorers,
that includes Joe Staub, Erik Thunberg and Sean Smith.
Novice multi-eventer freshman John Burns looks as though he
may step into a prominent role as well.
MIDDLE DISTANCE
With nary a senior on the roster, this group looks to maintain
the strong tradition in the middle distances that has produced
11 All-Americans since 2000. The natural pick to lead
THROWS
Senior Aaron Isaacs casts a long shadow over the throws.
An imposing 6’8”, Isaacs is All-BIG EAST in the discus and
the 35# weight throw runner-up. Isaacs is looking for a BIG
EAST Championship, as is javelin runner-up Rob Lasko
(64.25 meters). BIG EAST scorers
Dave Roy (hammer), Jim Roy (javelin)
and Andrew Dubs (shot put) will
Basil Campbell try to move up the ranks. Freshmen
Darius Sileikis, (shot put, discus
throw, hammer throw), Ed Strosnick
(javelin), Jesse Breault (javelin) and
Joe Tiernan (hammer) all promise to
contribute early.
DISTANCE
First year distance coach Rich
Miller has the Huskies rolling in
Cross Country. New England Cross
Country Championships title winner
Max Feldman became only the third
Husky to win the event. Feldman
also earned All-BIG EAST plaudits
this season after taking 12th place
at the BIG EAST Championships.
Feldman went on to place eighth
at the NCAA Regionals, giving him
the opportunity to compete at the
NCAA Championships a week later.
Feldman put the finishing touches
on his season by placing 135th at the
NCAA Championships.
Veteran Will Melofchik welcomes back classmates Paul
Durfee and Eckman as well as transfer Will Sanders (9:24
with potential for track success as well.
Huskies Enjoy
Another Season
of Success
Connecticut once again proves it’s one of the top teams
in the BIG EAST
CROSS COUNTRY
The 2005 edition of the University of Connecticut men’s cross country
program. Led by clutch performances throughout the course of the year, the
men’s cross country team produced another outstanding season.
UConn opened the 2005 campaign the way every team hopes to begin,
with a dominating win in the first meet of the season. The Huskies laid
claim to the Ted Owens Invitational with a total of 22 points, 11 points
higher than their closest competitor. UConn received outstanding individual
performances as the Huskies took home the first three spots led by
Brian Gagnon’s (28:03) first place finish. Kyle Eckman (28:09) posted a
UConn went on to place 14th in the following meet, the Iona Meet of
Up next for the Huskies was a trip to Boston, Mass. to take part in the
New England Cross Country Championships. Guided by a 28th place finish
from Feldman, UConn ran its way into an 18th place finish. Feldman
record with a time of 24:46.00 en route to a first place finish at the Albany
Cross Country Invitational. As a team, UConn took home ninth place
in search of their third BIG EAST Indoor championship in five years. True
to form, UConn laid claim on the league as the Huskies compiled a total of
135 points to take the title. Legare led the way as he competed in the 1,000-
The UConn coaching staff was also honored at the Championships with
Indoor Championship for head coach Greg Roy. He and his staff were also
recipients of this award at the 1995-96 Championships.
February came to
a close with a bang for
the Huskies as UConn
won its second consecutive
five individual titles in the
process. Campbell followed
OUTDOOR
Looking to ride the
momentum that helped
UConn produce such a successful indoor season, the Huskies opened
the outdoor season by participating in the Central Florida Invitational.
Although there was no team scoring, the Huskies produced four individual
champions. Jackson claimed the title in the 400-meter dash with a time of
58.56 seconds. Jonas TePaske tied for first with a height of 4.59-meters in
the pole vault, while Dubs earned first in the shot put with a throw of 15.58
meters. In the hammer throw, Isaacs won with a throw of 52.92 meters. In
the following meet, the Huskies returned to the state of Florida, once again
reeking havoc on the state as UConn captured eight events at the South
Florida Invitational. Kelechi Ndu won the 100-meter dash (10.99 seconds),
Logan Jones took the 400-meter dash (49.35), Gaulden won the high jump
and long jump (2.03 meters, 7.36 meters), Museveni Akanno claimed the
triple jump (14.02 meters), Dubs won the shot put (14.63 meters) and Roy
laid claim to the javelin throw (57.35 meters).
The Huskies opened the month of April with a return trip to the South
Florida Invitational, this time to take part in the first scored meet of the season.
UConn accumulated a total of 168 points to finish in second place, just
10 points shy of the first place finisher, Mississippi. Connecticut produced
four first place finishers and a total of 28 individuals who placed in the top
Max Feldman
UConn next traveled to Providence, R.I. to compete in the Brown
Invitational. The Huskies placed fourth overall, their third consecutive
meet in which they had finished in the top five. As was the case in nearly
every previous meet, the Huskies enjoyed a great deal of individual success,
placing 14 student-athletes in the top-10 of the Brown Invitational.
Midway through the month of April, UConn set its sights on the Sea Ray
Relays, another individual meet where the Huskies were sure to shine.
Freshman Marquis Thomas led the Huskies with a second place finish in the
high jump with a distance of 2.05 meters. Iannaccone also nailed down a
top-10 finish, placing seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.10.
The Huskies returned home to host the second UConn Invitational and
put up results much like the ones recorded in the initial
UConn Invitational. The Huskies erupted for 224
points en route to a first place finish as Connecticut
defeated Brown for the second consecutive UConn
Invitational. This time, the Huskies claimed 10 individual
titles, giving them a total of 18 titles during the
two home events.
Connecticut put the finishing touches on the
month of April with a trip north to take part in the
Wildcat Invitational in Durham, N.H. Despite no
team scoring in the event, the Huskies reeled off seven
individual titles to solidify their mark as one of the BIG
EAST top teams. Also that day, the Huskies earned a
fourth place finish at the Penn Relays with a time of
7:24.42 in the Championship of American 4x800-meter
relay.
The Huskies next looked primed to prove to
the league that they were the BIG EAST’s best team.
Although UConn fell just shy of a BIG EAST crown
in their following meet, the Huskies finished the afternoon
in third place, just 29 points behind first place
winner, Notre Dame. Highlighting the event, Legare
closed out his BIG EAST career with a bang, capturing
the 800-meter title and anchoring the winning 4x800-
meter relay team en route to being named the 2006
BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Most Outstanding Track Performer. In the 4x800-
meter relay, the UConn team of Gagnon, Feldman,
Iannaccone and Legare finished in a season-best time of
7:23.53 to win the title. Capturing UConn’s third individual
title at the meet was Campbell in the 110-meter
hurdles, posting a career-best time of 14.24 seconds en
route to being named All-BIG EAST. Also earning All-
BIG EAST honors for their finishes were freshman Rob
Lasko, Kelechi Ndu and Radzevich. Lasko turned in a
personal-best distance of 64.25 meters for second in the
javelin competition while Ndu was second in the 100-
meter dash with a time of 10.68 seconds and Radzevich was third in the pole
vault with a height of 5.18 meters. In the decathlon, Berg notched a second
place finish with 7,178 points, while Staub took home third place with a
total of 6,427 points as the duo earned All-BIG EAST plaudits.
With one final meet remaining before individuals were to compete in
the NCAA Championships, the Huskies placed seventh with a total of 30
points at the IC4A Championships in the final tune up before four Huskies
were to take part in the NCAA Regionals.
Radzevich, Legare, Campbell and Tift would each go on to compete
in the NCAA Regionals, held in Greensboro, N.C. Legare finished in third
place in the 800-meter finals with a time of 1:49.25 at the NCAA Eastern
Regional Championships and advanced to the NCAA Championships for
the second time. Legare, however, would not advance to the second round.
Berg finished 18th in the decathlon with a total of 6,069 points as the
University of Connecticut men’s track and field team wrapped up its competition
at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, putting
a stamp on another outstanding season for the University of Connecticut
Jeffrey A. Hathaway has played a vital role in the success story of athletics at the University of Connecticut for 15 of the past 17 years. Hathaway is in his fourth
year as Director of Athletics at UConn and he was the Executive Associate Director of Athletics at the school from 1990-2001.
In his only two years away from the Storrs campus, Hathaway enjoyed a successful tenure as the Director of Athletics at Colorado State University from 2002-
03.
His first three years as UConn’s Director of Athletics have arguably been the
most successful in school history.
Last year, UConn won BIG EAST Championships in men’s and women’s
basketball, men’s and women’ soccer, field hockey and men’s indoor track and field.
The UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams also advanced to the Elite Eight
of the NCAA Championship and the men’s and women’s soccer, men’s indoor
track and field and field hockey squads also took part in NCAA competition.
Fundraising for UConn athletics reached another new milestone under
Hathaway in 2005-06 as over $17 million was raised for the UConn Athletic
Development Fund. Fundraising for UConn athletics has set a new record each
year that Hathaway has served as Director of Athletics.
In addition, UConn secured a gift of $2.5 million from UConn graduate Mark
Shenkman in 2004 for the building of the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center, an
intercollegiate, intramural and recreational facility that now serves the entire UConn
community.
A pair of highly-significant athletic achievements have occurred during
Hathaway’s time as Director of Athletics. UConn became the first school to win the
NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball championship in the same year
(2004) and the football team participated and was victorious in its first bowl game The Hathaway family (left to right): Jeff, Meghan, Michael and Paula.
– the 2004 Motor City Bowl .
Hathaway has helped ensure the long-term stability of the UConn athletic
department as he oversaw the long-term contract extensions of men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma and football coach
Randy Edsall in 2004-05.
Hathaway was also a key factor in the opening of Rentschler Field in 2003 – the country’s newest and most modern college football facility.
During Hathaway’s career, he has always made the student-athlete the top priority. In the spring and fall semesters of the 2005 calendar year, nearly 40 percent of
UConn’s 650 student-athletes earned a 3.0 grade point average or better. In addition, the Division of Athletics has consistently maintained a 99 percent retention rate
among its student-athletes.
“My focus is on the student-athlete,” says Hathaway. “That’s the most important part of our program. Our primary mission is the continued academic success of
our student-athletes. The challenge is to identify people early in the process and assist them in charting a career path. In addition, we want to provide a quality experience
in intercollegiate athletics for our student-athletes.”
Hathaway’s leadership has earned him respect and recognition both on the national and local levels.
In 2004, The Sporting News named Hathaway to its “Power 100 List” – comprised of the 100 most powerful people in sports.
He received the Joseph J. Fontana Distinguished Service Award from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association in the spring of 2005.
Hathaway represents the University on a number of NCAA and BIG EAST Conference committees providing the school with a strong presence nationally.
He is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, as well as the Football Licensing Subcommittee, which is responsible for issues
involving postseason football competition and the licensing of bowl games.
Hathaway represents the BIG EAST Conference in those positions and was also a member of those committees while at Colorado State as a representative of the
Mountain West Conference.
On the conference level, Hathaway is the chairman of the BIG EAST Finance Committee and will serve in that position until October 2006. He is also the vicechairman
of the BIG EAST Championship and Competition Committee and will begin a three-year term as its chairman on Nov. 1, 2006.
Hathaway originally came to Connecticut in November of 1990 as Senior Associate Athletic Director. In that role, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the
Division of Athletics.
He also served internally as a program administrator for several sports, including men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer at UConn as the
Huskies won four national championships in those sports during his tenure – two in women’s basketball (1995 and 2000) and one each in men’s basketball (1999) and
men’s soccer (2000).
Hathaway was the program administrator for football and he played a key role in the upgrade of UConn’s football program to Division I-A status and the building
of Rentschler Field.
During Hathaway’s tenure at Colorado State, he oversaw a 15-sport program – nine women’s teams and six men’s. The Ram football team made a pair of bowl
appearances while Hathaway was at CSU. The men’s basketball team won the Mountain West Conference tournament in March of ‘03 and advanced to the NCAA
tournament for the first time in 13 years. The women’s basketball team advanced to postseason play twice, including a trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament
in 2002 and the semifinals of the 2003 Women’s NIT. A total of four Ram teams won Mountain West championships during 2002-03 and seven took part in postseason
play.
Hathaway was an extremely successful fundraiser during his time in Fort Collins. The school drew national attention for a $15.2 million gift from the Bohemian
Foundation and president Pat Stryker for football stadium renovations and expansion.
Prior to his first stint at UConn, Hathaway served in a number of capacities at his alma mater – the University of Maryland – from 1982-90, including Assistant
Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions, Acting Assistant Athletics Director for Business Affairs, Athletics Business Manager and men’s basketball trainer.
Hathaway earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Administration from the University of Maryland in 1981. He later received a Master’s Degree in General
Administration (1991) from the University of Maryland and is currently continuing work on a PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut.
He attended The Sports Management Institute at the Universities of Notre Dame and Southern California. Hathaway also completed the Management
Development Program at Harvard University.
Born June 20, 1959, in Cheverly, Md., Hathaway and his wife Paula have two children: Meghan (October 15, 1991) and Michael (June 11, 1995).
