BILL MORGAN
- HEAD COACH
- SECOND SEASON - 25TH OVERALL
- FIELD/MULTI-EVENTS
Bill Morgan is in his second season as head coach of the Connecticut
women’s track and fi eld program, after serving as an assistant coach for
22 years and as interim head coach in 2003-04. He specializes in coaching
fi eld events and multi-events, for which he has gained a national reputation
for excellence after guiding numerous UConn athletes to collegiate, national
and Olympic Trials successes. Morgan was an assistant coach during the
BIG EAST Conference Championships of 1986 and 1995 along with 23 New
England Championships. His total of 139 conference champions includes
24 ECAC, 67 New England and 43 BIG EAST titles.
Morgan has been a part of several program highlights since taking the
helm of the women’s track and fi eld program. His leadership has led his
squads not only in competition, but also in the classroom. The 2004-05
squad was named a NCAA Division I All-Academic team, with the team
recording a cumulative 3.11 GPA. Morgan coached fi ve-time All-American, Deirdre Mullen to a conference record-breaking performance
in the high jump. Mullen cleared 1.83m (6-00.00) to capture fi rst in the high jump and set a BIG EAST Championship record. At the New
England Championships, he coached Tamara Highsmith to an individual New England championship as she fi nished fi rst in the triple jump
with personal-best mark of 12.28m (40-3.75). Edwina Clark was also successful in the New Englands under Morgan’s leadership, as she
earned an individual New England Championship in the long jump with a mark of 5.81m (19-00.75).
As interim head coach in 2003-2004, Morgan’s cross country team placed 4th of 41 teams at the New England Championship for its best
fi nish in nine years. The squad placed eighth out of 14 at the BIG EAST and took 11th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Regional Championship,
both fi ve-year bests for the Huskies.
His indoor track and field squad captured the New England Championship while placing sixth out of 44 teams at the ECAC Championships.
Nicola Hines became Morgan’s fi rst “track” conference champion as she won the 500-meter at the New England Indoor Championships
and also coached April Garner to the New England and ECAC Championships in the hurdles. The season concluded with six individual
conference champions, two school records and an All-American. The outdoor season proved to be just as exciting. Morgan produced two
conference champions in the discus and the high jump, three NCAA regional qualifi ers and an Olympic Trials qualifi er while adding three
school records.
During his tenure at Connecticut, Morgan has coached nine All-America performers to 19 All-America titles, the most recent being Deirdre
Mullen during the 2005 campaign. Morgan also coached Nicole Toney in the triple
jump in 2001 and NCAA Runner-Up Tamika Toppin in the high jump. Prior to that,
he coached Toppin in the high jump (1998 and 1999), Bethany Hart (1999 and 2000)
and Wendy Berutto (1997) in the hammer throw, long jumpers Carol Galloway (1985)
and Cheryl Brantle (1992), Terry Roy in 1992, 1993 and 1995, and high jumper Ronna
Deffer, a NCAA National Outdoor Championship fi nalist in 1992.
Morgan’s athletes have taken part in four Olympic trials. In July of 2000, he accompanied
Hart and Toppin to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento where Hart was the
top collegian in the competition. The two were his fourth and fi fth student-athletes to
qualify for the trials. He also coached Roy, Brantle and Berutto to the U.S. Olympic
Trials in Atlanta in June of 1996, Roy to the 1992 trials in New Orleans and most
recently, Mullen to the trials in Sacramento, Calif. in 2004.
In 2004, Mullen became his second national team member as she earned a bronze
medal at the NACAC Under-23 Championships in Sherbrooke, Canada. One of
Morgan’s former athletes, three time All-American Terry Roy, also became the Junior
National Champion in the heptathlon while participating in the World Junior Championships
in Korea. Morgan’s work with Amy Parkosewich moved her from a freshman
walk-on to an NCAA outdoor qualifi er and nationally ranked discus thrower during
her career at UConn.
Morgan has taken part in the USA Track and Field Women’s Junior Elite Throws
Camp in San Diego as well as the USA Track and Field Women’s Elite Heptathlon
Summit in Tucson, Arizona, along with All-American Roy. He has also written published
articles on topics related to imagery in sport. In 2002, Morgan was acknowledged
as an AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year for distinguished service at the
University of Connecticut.
Morgan presently resides in Storrs. He recently retired after 30 years of public
school teaching; 29 of those in the Columbia School District as a physical education
instructor. Horace W. Porter School was recognized as the only school in the state to
have received the Outstanding Achievement Award on the Connecticut State Physical
Fitness Assessment Mastery Test for an unprecedented six straight years. Morgan
was an undefeated track and fi eld coach at Porter School for fi ve years, going 51-
0 in dual meet competition. Among the many age-group athletes he has coached,
Morgan developed three national champions in the shot put, discus and pentathlon.
2005-06 Preview
CROSS COUNTRY
Led by senior captain Niamh Cunningham (Branford,
Conn.) and junior Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.),
the University of Connecticut women’s cross country
team is poised for yet another successful season.
As the Huskies’ top returners, Cunningham and Sullivan
will look to earn New England, BIG EAST, and
NCAA Northeast Regional honors while leading their
teammates through the intense championship schedule.
Undoubtedly one of the premiere cross country
conferences in the nation, the BIG EAST will pose a
great opportunity to establish UConn cross country
on the national scene.
With Cunningham and Sullivan leading the charge,
upperclassmen and several freshmen will combine to
create the heart of this cross country team – the pack.
Sophomore Orlaith Cunningham (Branford, Conn.)
and senior Cara Reardon (Northborough, Mass.) will
provide leadership in this young group. Their collective
talents and experience will pay great dividends
on the course. Many new faces join the squad this
fall. Most notably, Kate Vaughan (Bethel Park, Pa.),
Keelan King (Scotia, N.Y.), Taylor Lebovich (Old Tappan,
N.J.) and Julie Vilord (Suffern, N.Y.) will lead this
exciting and talented freshman class as the season
unfolds. With the combination of seasoned veterans
and hungry freshmen, the Husky pack will prove to
be formidable this fall.
TRACK AND FIELD
SPRINTS & HURDLES
With the graduation of 2005 senior co-captain April
Garner, school record-holder in the 55 hurdles, the
60 hurdles, the 100 hurdles, the 4x100 relay and the
4x200 relay, the coaching staff is looking toward the
future, which should be bright with a very talented
young group. Leading the way in the 55 and the 100
hurdles will be sophomore standout Tamara Highsmith
(East Haven, CT), the 2005 indoor New England
runner-up in the 55 hurdles. Highsmith will have the
help of two freshmen sprint champions from the state
of Massachusetts, Kara Budd (East Longmeadow,
Mass.) and Jessica Forman (Wayland, Mass.). Like
Highsmith, Budd is a multi-event athlete that should
fi nd success at the 55 and 100 hurdles. Foreman, a
Massachusetts State Champion in the 100 and 200
with outstanding speed, will hurdle for the fi rst time in
her career, providing depth to the hurdle squad.
Depth in the short sprints should not be a problem
for the Huskies with this year’s talented freshman
class. Highlighting the class are two former nationally
ranked high school sprinters, Alyssa Evering (Bel
Air, Md.) and Monique Hodges (Wethersfield, Conn.).
Both bring great credentials to the program. Evering
comes to UConn as a nationally ranked 100 and
200 sprinter from Fallston High School in Maryland.
Competing in track and fi eld for only two years, she
won five individual state titles while helping her team
win two state championships. Hodges also came to
UConn as a nationally ranked sprinter in two events,
the 55 and the 100. She won several Connecticut
State Titles and New England Championships in
both events. She was also a strong competitor in the
200. The depth does not end there. Marlene Brown
(Norwalk, Conn.) and Jessica White (Middleton,
Mass.) also add experience and accomplishments
of their own to the sprinting squad. This group will
make an immediate impact on the team, helping to
elevate the team’s status in the BIG EAST and ECAC
conferences.
The 400 hurdles is another event the Huskies
should excel in this year. Leading the charge will be
the BIG EAST 2005 Outdoor Championships third and
fourth place fi nishers, Highsmith and junior Marlene
Priest (So. Dennis, Mass.). Highsmith and Priest
should get strong support from sophomore Kaitlyn
Whitlock (Bethel, Conn.), who is poised for a breakthrough
year in 2006, along with Budd. Newcomers
will be heavily relied on in the fl at 400, an area in
which the team will further develop. Returning veteran
Jennifer Rogers (Parksville,B.C.) and Edwina Clark
(Sydney, Australia), half of the Huskies’ outstanding
4x400 relay team, will look to carry their successes
from last year into this season as the 400 and horizontal
jumps specialists. Rogers, the New England indoor
runner-up in the 400, set a new personal best at the
New Englands with a time of 56.38. She is looking
to make a big improvement on that time and will have
help from two highly impressive newcomers, freshmen
Mandela Graves-Fulgham (Shutesbury, Mass)
and Sharelle Green (New London, Conn.). Graves-
Fulgham was the Massachusetts state champion in
the 400 with a personal best time of 55.99. She is
also the New England Champion, having excelled in
every sprint event. Her New England rival is the Connecticut
13-time Class and State Open Champion,
Green. The former New London High School star has
a personal best of 55.98 in the quarter mile. She has
been a New England champion and runner-up in the
same event. This duo will leave their mark on UConn,
and possibly, the BIG EAST record books. While the
sprint squad will miss the outstanding leadership of
Garner, Coach Terrelonge is confi dent in his talented
group of young sprinters.
DISTANCE & MIDDLE DISTANCE
On the track, the middle distance corps welcomes
several new faces. Most notably, King joins the Huskies
as a 2:14 half-miler who demonstrates unlimited
potential in the mile and the 1500. Vicki Weismann
(Wachusett, Mass.) brings excellent 400 speed and
competitive energy to the mid-distance training group.
Having spent last year transitioning into the longer
events, senior Erin Sales (Windsor Locks, CT) will
stretch her talents from the 400 to the 800, providing
leadership to this young middle distance corps.
In the mile/1500, the Huskies will be well
epresented, as speed and endurance combine for
this race– track’s most historic event. Sullivan, who
is also the school record-holder in the 3000 steeplechase,
will be joined by Lebovich and King as they
race to become sub-fi ve minute milers. Coupled with
the middle distance group, these athletes will unite to
create one of the deepest distance relay pools in the
recent history of the program. In the team’s quest to
climb the BIG EAST ladder, this group can make an
immediate impact in the relay events.
For the longer distance events, the Huskies will turn
to distance ace Niamh Cunningham for signifi cant
points in the 3k, the 5k, and the 10k. A returning BIG
EAST scorer, Cunningham’s leadership, work ethic,
and poise will serve the team well as she mentors
the underclassmen that are following closely in her
footsteps. Her younger sister, Orlaith, and Vaughan
will provide depth to this developing distance crew.
THE VERTICAL JUMPS
HIGH JUMP & POLE VAULT
With the graduation of fi ve-time All-American Deirdre
Mullen in the high jump, Coach Morgan will look
to freshmen Rachel Porter (Watertown, Conn.) and
multi-eventer Budd to develop in an event in which the
program has had national success. Porter and Budd
are Connecticut and Massachusetts state champions,
respectively.
Nine All-American titles have established the UConn
jumpers as a major force in the country. Maintaining
the tradition will take time.
In the pole vault, senior Leah Williams (Brookfi eld,
Conn.) along with junior Lisa Kachmarsky (Monroe,
N.Y.) continue to show signs of breaking through
into the scoring ranks at conference championships.
Williams will chase both indoor and outdoor school
records as early practices have indicated a renewed
confi dence.
THE HORIZONTAL JUMPS
LONG & TRIPLE
A high level of performance is expected in the horizontal
jumps as NCAA Regional qualifi ers Highsmith
(triple jump) and Clark (long jump) return for their
sophomore seasons. Highsmith won the New England
indoor title while Clark complimented that effort
with a title in the long jump. Both have made their
way onto the All-Time best list with Clark at fourth for
indoor long jump and Highsmith at second and fourth
in the triple jump for outdoor and indoor, respectively.
With New England and BIG EAST scorer Rogers
returning for her junior year and Clark demonstrating
a latent talent in the triple jump, the outcome looks
even more promising. Add Budd, the Massachusetts
and New England champion in the triple jump to the
mix and it becomes evident that this young group will
make some noise on regional and possibly national
levels. Further depth is seen with the addition of
Massachusetts State long jump champion Graves-
THE PENTATHLON/HEPTATHLON
Not since three-time All-American heptathlete Terry
Roy competed has there been a signifi cant opportunity
for success in the multi-events. Hopes are
placed on Highsmith to make the transition successful
along with the talented Budd. Both demonstrate
some outstanding qualities which should translate
into promising performances. Highsmith should be
able to balance the demands of the extensive training
required in the pentathlon/heptathlon with her
specialty events and may contribute in a signifi cant
way on the national scene.
THE THROWS
The University of Connecticut throwers have traditionally
competed at the national level and hope to
continue the great tradition of All-American alumni.
Former athlete Bethany Hart, competing on both
the USA National Women’s Bobsled Team and the
USA World Championships Track and Field Team
that recently returned from Helsinki, Finland, set the
standard with her lofty accomplishments. Present
members are in position to add to her legacy. Having
swept the top three positions in the weight throw at the
New England Championships in last year’s campaign,
junior Cassie Buckwalter (New Willmington, Pa.) and
sophomore Erin Donnelly (Barrington, R.I.) are back
to continue the tradition. Donnelly, a former national
high school champion in the weight and hammer
throw, will anchor her respective events. Connecticut
high school champion Jennifer Krodel (Salem, Conn.)
will develop into a contributing member in both events
while newcomer Regina Graziano (Guilford, Conn.)
adds depth to a fi ne group.
The discus provides another event in which BIG
EAST runner-up and NCAA regional qualifi er Buckwalter
is expected to excel. Her dramatic fi nish in
last years’ championship has put her in position to
challenge the school record held by former teammate
Amy Parkosewich, a NCAA Championship qualifi er
in 2004. Look for junior Allison Booth (Shelby, Ohio)
to move up in the ranks as she returns after sitting
out her sophomore season. Krodel and Graziano will
also be looked upon to develop in this area.
Although there is potential to perform well in the
shot put, Buckwalter and Booth must demonstrate
consistency in order to break through in the conference
championships. Booth was a fi nalist in the BIG
EAST Outdoor Championships as a freshman and
will be looked upon to score points in her specialty.
Look for upstart Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) to
surprise in this area as she develops her technique
and understanding of the event.
Martin’s specialty, javelin, will provide her an opportunity
to contribute in the BIG EAST. As one of the
top high school New England performers, she is held
back only by lack of experience. Her great work ethic
will enhance her position in the rankings.
The Student in Student-Athlete
In The Classroom
The University of Connecticut women’s
track and fi eld and cross country teams
has been a success not only in competition,
but in the classroom as well. The
team has been named a NCAA Division
I All-Academic team for the past three
years. The main criteria for the award is
that the cumulative grade point average
for all student-athletes on the Squad List
for indoor and/or outdoor track and cross
country must be 3.00 of higher. The most
recent award went to the 2004-05 team
that posted a 3.11 GPA.
The program attributes its success to its
work ethic and support staff. The team
itself devised a plan to help enhance academic
performace and promote team unity
through organized group study sessions.
The plan is fl exible, low-impact and positive.
All historical feedback from programs
like this have indicated it is successful
at achieving the objective set forth. Also
helping to achieve the team’s objective are
its support staff, including John Miceli of
the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. CPIA is a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs with the primary
goal of assisting student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics. As
academic affairs offi cers, CPIA counselors function as liasons between the athletic and academic communities. Counselors
work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful
transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, including, but not limited to, Counseling,
Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs.
Miceli, along with other members of the athletics staff have been honored with the Outstanding Service Award which
is awarded to a support staff member to recognize their commitment and service to University of Connecticut Women’s
Cross Country/Track and Field student-athletes, past and present.
UConn student-athletes, including Erin Sales,
Leah Williams and Melanie Murphy, volunteered
their time to help collect non-perishable
food items to benefit the Convenant
Soup Kitchen in Willimantic.
CPIA provides student-athletes like Alyssa Evering, Monique
Hodges, Melanie Murphy and Rachel Porter with a comfortable
and quiet environment to study and bond as a team off the track.
In The Community
The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that
the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms,
libraries, fi elds and courts. Community service is an integral part
of the UConn experience, as Husky student-athletes contribute
countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. The
women’s track and fi eld/cross country teams have been active
in several community service activities, including working a drive
in conjunction with the American Red Cross that raised a total of
$30,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina earlier this year.
The team has also been individually recognized for its efforts as
Leah Williams, a senior on this year’s squad, was chosen to represent
UConn at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference. Each
school is permitted to send one representative to the event and a
total of 324 student-athletes out of 1,166 who were nominated took
part in last year’s conference.
The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes
with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on
their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them
with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication,
decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference
also promotes better communication among student-athletes,
coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The fi ve-day
conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the
student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members
to a group. The conference is an outreach of the NCAA’s
highly-successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.
Criteria for selection include the student-athletes’ demonstrated
ability and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes’
potential to benefi t signifi cantly from a leadership development experience.
In order to be eligible for the conference, the student-athletes
must be in good academic standing, and must have athletics
eligibility remaining in the following academic year.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Support Staff
The University of Connecticut is committed to each track member, and all of its student-athletes, as a total person.
Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of the players college experience. At the
University of Connecticut, academic achievement is the primary concern. Impressively, for the past four years the
Connecticut student-athlete retention rate has been 99.0 percent.
The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Participation in athletics is not viewed as an
obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complementary activity. Each supports
the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the
utmost priority.
The University realizes that the hockey team and all student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required
to commit a large percentage of their personal time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the
University recognizes the need for a support program for its intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for
Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) constantly assists all student-athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA
staff serves as a liaison to the academic faculty, the Division of Athletics, and the student-athlete.
In serving as a liaison between the Connecticut student-athletes and University faculty and staff, the CPIA counselors
also provide assistance in securing appropriate support services available with the University. These include orientation
for student-athletes, supervised study halls, individual tutors and tutorial centers (an English/Writing Center, Math
Center and Reading Center), and learning skills seminars.
For the past three years, the writing lab and computers have been networked to a national database which allow
all student-athletes to do research at their actual computer stations.
DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS MEDICINE
The department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut
Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose
purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for the hockey studentathletes
to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride
in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted
to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing
athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and
conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry,
nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide
comprehensive care for the student-athlete.
Physician coverage is provided by Jeffrey Anderson, M.D., the Director
of Sports Medicine and Team Physician Thomas Trojian, M.D. The
Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include Edward
Collins, M.D. of the Connecticut Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center
in Willimantic, Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Specialists in
Glastonbury, Barry Messinger, M.D. of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic
