CROSS COUNTRY<br />

The University of Connecticut women’s cross country team celebrated several<br />

team <strong>and</strong> individual accompl<strong>is</strong>hments in the 2004 season, including an 11th<br />

place fi n<strong>is</strong>h out of 32 teams at the NCAA Regional Championship.<br />

The <strong>Huskies</strong> began the 2004 season on a high note with a fi rst place fi n<strong>is</strong>h<br />

at the Central Connecticut Blue Devil Invitational. Kr<strong>is</strong>ten Meyer (Hillsborough,<br />

N.J.) fi n<strong>is</strong>hed in fi rst, followed by Jillian Sullivan (Br<strong>is</strong>tol, Conn.) in fi fth, All<strong>is</strong>on<br />

Croft (Ellington, Conn.) in sixth, Niamh Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) in<br />

seventh <strong>and</strong> Julie LaFrano (Loudonville, N.Y.) in ninth to round out the top-10 for<br />

Connecticut.<br />

In their second meet of the season, the <strong>Huskies</strong> took fourth place at the<br />

Wildcat Invitational. Meyer led the way once again, placing fi rst with a time of<br />

18:06.66. Also fi n<strong>is</strong>hing in the top-20 for the <strong>Huskies</strong> was Cunningham.<br />

Meyer led the team to a seventh place fi n<strong>is</strong>h at the Iona Meet of Champions<br />

with an individual seventh place fi n<strong>is</strong>h in the race. The <strong>Huskies</strong>’ trend continued<br />

throughout the season as they fi n<strong>is</strong>hed in the top-10 in every meet leading up to<br />

the NCAA Regionals.<br />

With another strong showing, the team placed fi fth out of 45 teams at the New<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong> Championships. Meyer had a fi fth place individual fi n<strong>is</strong>h, completing<br />

the course in 17:50. Following Meyer for the <strong>Huskies</strong> were Cunningham in 36th<br />

with a time of 18:49,LaFrano in 57th with a time of 19:08, Sullivan with a time of<br />

19:08 in 58th <strong>and</strong> Croft with a time of 19:09 in 59th.<br />

Two weeks later, Connecticut took home a win at the CCSU Mini Meet.<br />

Meyer helped lead <strong>UConn</strong> to victory with a second place overall fi n<strong>is</strong>h in 11:44.<br />

<strong>UConn</strong> won the meet with 31 points, just ahead of the University of Rhode Isl<strong>and</strong><br />

with 32 points. Behind Meyer for the <strong>Huskies</strong>, were Sullivan in fourth with a time<br />

of 12:00, Cunningham in fi fth with a time of 12:01, Croft in ninth with a time of<br />

12:10 <strong>and</strong> Maxine Davila (Staten Isl<strong>and</strong>, N.Y.) in 11th with a time of 12:12.<br />

The team placed eighth at the 2004 BIG EAST Championship with 217 points<br />

the following weekend. Meyer was the top fi n<strong>is</strong>her for the <strong>Huskies</strong> placing 16th<br />

out of 104 competitors with a time of 21:19. Cunningham followed in 34th with a<br />

time of 22:12 <strong>and</strong> sophomore Sullivan took 51st with a time of 22:55.<br />

In the fi nal meet of the season, the NCAA Regional Championship, Meyer<br />

was once again Connecticut’s top-fi n<strong>is</strong>her with a time of 22:08.9, coming in 35th<br />

out of 219 competitors. Cunningham followed in 57th with a time of 22:37.5.<br />

LaFrano placed 86th with a time of 23:10.3, Sullivan took 88th with a time of<br />

23:12.5 <strong>and</strong> Croft came in 89th with a time of 23:12.8.<br />

INDOOR<br />

Connecticut began the indoor track season with a number of strong individual<br />

performances at the Alden Invitational, hosted by Brown University, with many<br />

fi n<strong>is</strong>hing in the top three of their respective events. The <strong>Huskies</strong> swept the 20-lb.<br />

weight, with Cassie Buckwalter (New Wilmington, Pa.) taking home fi rst place<br />

with a throw of 16.52 meters (54-2.5). Freshman Erin Donnelly (Barrington,<br />

R.I.) was second in the event <strong>and</strong> set a new freshman record with a throw of<br />

16.32m (53-6.5). Her throw eclipsed the previous mark set by sophomore Da<strong>is</strong>y<br />

VanRavenswaay (Canfi eld, Ontario), who rounded out the top-three <strong>UConn</strong><br />

performance with a showing of 15.76m (51-8.5). VanRavenswaay also took<br />

home a fi rst-place performance in the shot put, putting 14.73m (48-4). Other<br />

notable individual performances included a fi rst-place fi n<strong>is</strong>h in the 55 hurdles by<br />

senior co-captain April Garner (Temple Hills, Md.) with a time of 8.22, <strong>and</strong> a 1-2<br />

sweep in the 400 by freshman Edwina Clark (Sydney, Australia) <strong>and</strong> sophomore<br />

Jennifer Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) with times of 59.82 <strong>and</strong> 59.91, respectively.<br />

In relay events, the <strong>Huskies</strong>’ 4x400 squad of Clark, Rogers, Tamara Highsmith<br />

(East Haven, Conn.) <strong>and</strong> Garner fl ew to a fi rst-place fi n<strong>is</strong>h in 3:57.36.<br />

At the start of the new year, the women’s track <strong>and</strong> fi eld squad took home<br />

seven fi rst place fi n<strong>is</strong>hes, including four 1-2 sweeps, at the University of Rhode<br />

Isl<strong>and</strong> New Year Classic. The <strong>Huskies</strong> dominated the fi eld events, taking fi rst<br />

<strong>and</strong> second in the pole vault, long jump <strong>and</strong> triple jump <strong>and</strong> also winning the<br />

high jump <strong>and</strong> shot put. Junior Leah Williams (Brookfi eld, Conn.) <strong>and</strong> sophomore<br />

L<strong>is</strong>a Kachmarsky (Monroe, N.Y.) fi n<strong>is</strong>hed fi rst <strong>and</strong> second in the pole vault, each<br />

with a mark of 3.15m (10-4.0). Clark was the long jump champion with a mark<br />

of 5.53m (18-1.75). Rogers followed her in second with a 5.40m (17-8.75) jump.<br />

Rogers then won the triple jump with her mark of 10.83m (35-6.5) <strong>and</strong> Highsmith<br />

won the high jump with a showing of 1.60m (5-3.0) <strong>and</strong> also took second in the<br />

triple jump with a 10.77m (35-4.0) mark. Rounding out the fi eld winners, VanRavenswaay<br />

placed fi rst in the shot put, putting 14.19m (46-6.75) <strong>and</strong> was third in<br />

the weight throw with a 15.74m (51-7.75) throw. On the track, <strong>UConn</strong> won two<br />

events with freshman Sarah F<strong>is</strong>her (Houston, Texas) taking fi rst in the 500 with a<br />

time of 1:17.45 <strong>and</strong> Garner winning the 55 hurdles in 8.20.<br />

With 195 points, the team won the Black Knight Invitational, hosted by the<br />

2004-05 Review<br />

United States Military Academy on January 21, 2005, fi n<strong>is</strong>hing well ahead of<br />

second place Pennsylvania with 143 points. Army followed in third with 142<br />

points <strong>and</strong> Manhattan was fourth with 126 points. The <strong>Huskies</strong> were led by<br />

Garner as she won three individual events, taking the 60 with a time of 7.67<br />

seconds, the 60 hurdles in 8.63 seconds <strong>and</strong> the 200 in 25.41 seconds. She also<br />

anchored the 4x400 relay, which took fi rst with a time of 3:55.09. Other <strong>UConn</strong><br />

individual winners were sophomore Marlene Priest (South Denn<strong>is</strong>, Mass) in the<br />

500 (1:19.90 seconds), Clark in the long jump (5.73m), VanRavenswaay in the<br />

shot put (14.17m) <strong>and</strong> Rogers in the triple jump (11.73m).<br />

At the Boston University Invitational, Garner won the 55 hurdles with a<br />

personal best time of 7.88 seconds, breaking her own school record of 7.93<br />

seconds. VanRavenswaay won the shot put with a mark of 14.44m (47-04.50).<br />

The <strong>Huskies</strong> swept the top three spots in the weight throw as VanRavenswaay<br />

won the event with a 17.21m (56-05.75) throw, Buckwalter came in second with<br />

a 16.01m (52-06.50) throw <strong>and</strong> Donnelly took third with a mark of 15.95m (52-<br />

04.00). Kachmarsky placed third in the pole vault, clearing 3.20m (10-06.00) <strong>and</strong><br />

Clark came in third in the long jump with a mark of 5.70m (18-08.50).<br />

At the Boston University St. Valentine Invitational, Garner led the <strong>Huskies</strong> as<br />

she won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.92 seconds. She also ran in the<br />

55-meter dash <strong>and</strong> fi n<strong>is</strong>hed fourth in 7.24 seconds. VanRavenswaay came in<br />

second in the shot put, putting 14.44m (47-04.50) <strong>and</strong> took third in the weight<br />

throw with a personal-best mark of 17.30m (56-09.25). Meyer, Sullivan <strong>and</strong> Croft<br />

all qualifi ed for the BIG EAST Championship in the mile with times of 5:01.93,<br />

5:07.67 <strong>and</strong> 5:10.98, respectively. Williams also had a BIG EAST qualifying mark<br />

of 3.36m (11-00.25) in the pole vault.<br />

At the BIG EAST Championships, the <strong>Huskies</strong> came in 10th place. Garner<br />

broke her own school record in the 60 hurdles, fi n<strong>is</strong>hing third in the preliminaries<br />

with a time of 8.38 seconds. Garner then went on to take second in the fi nals<br />

with a time of 8.44. In the shot put, VanRavenswaay captured third with a mark<br />

of 14.74m (48-04.50). She also placed fourth in the weight throw with a 17.09m<br />

(56-01.00) throw. Also scoring points for the <strong>Huskies</strong> were Meyer who ran an<br />

ECAC qualifying time of 17:09.85 to take sixth in the 5000 <strong>and</strong> Clark who also<br />

qualifi ed for the ECAC championship, fi n<strong>is</strong>hing seventh in the long jump with a<br />

mark of 5.71m (18-09.00). Connecticut’s 4x400 relay squad of Garner, Clark,<br />

Rogers <strong>and</strong> Highsmith came in fourth with a time of 3:50.01. The d<strong>is</strong>tance<br />

medley relay team also took sixth<br />

The following weekend, with 116 points, the team fi n<strong>is</strong>hed second out of<br />

33 teams at the New Engl<strong>and</strong> Championships, hosted by Boston University.<br />

Garner was the individual champion in two events as she won the 200 in 24.38<br />

seconds <strong>and</strong> took fi rst in the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.85 seconds. Right<br />

behind Garner in the 55 hurdles was Highsmith in second with a time of 8.15<br />

seconds. Highsmith also earned an individual championship as she fi n<strong>is</strong>hed fi rst<br />

in the triple jump with personal-best mark of 12.28m (40-03.50). <strong>UConn</strong> posted<br />

a one-two-three sweep in the weight throw as VanRavenswaay won the event<br />

with a 16.80m (55-01.50) throw, Buckwalter took second with a mark of 16.09m<br />

(52-09.50) <strong>and</strong> Donnelly placed third with a 15.92m (52-02.75) throw. VanRavenswaay<br />

placed fi rst in the shot put as well, putting 14.52m (47-07.75).<br />

Clark was another individual champion for the <strong>Huskies</strong> as she captured fi rst<br />

in the long jump with a mark of 5.81m (19-00.75). The <strong>UConn</strong> 4x400 relay squad<br />

also turned in a successful showing with a second place time of 3:45.83. For<br />

her efforts at the New Engl<strong>and</strong>s, Garner earned the ECAC Athlete of the Week<br />

award.<br />

OUTDOOR<br />

Garner was the <strong>Huskies</strong>’ top fi n<strong>is</strong>her in the season-opening Hurricane<br />

Invitational, winning the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.93 seconds. The 4x400<br />

relay squad of Garner, Rogers, Clark <strong>and</strong> Highsmith placed fourth with a time<br />

of 3:51.20. <strong>UConn</strong> also faired well in the fi eld events as co-captain Deirdre<br />

Mullen (Princeton, N.J.) took second in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.74m<br />

(5-08.5) while Highsmith came in second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.66m<br />

(38-03.25) <strong>and</strong> VanRavenswaay posted a 39.83m (130-08.00) throw in the<br />

javelin, good for second place in the event.<br />

Cunningham competed at the Raleigh Relays at Paul Derr <strong>Track</strong> on March<br />

25, 2005. She ran in the 10,000 <strong>and</strong> fi n<strong>is</strong>hed 11th with a personal-best time<br />

of 37:17.18, which qualifi ed her for the BIG EAST, New Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> ECAC<br />

Championships.<br />

The squad turned in 16 top-three fi n<strong>is</strong>hes <strong>and</strong> had two individuals qualify for<br />

the NCAA regionals at the Dick Shea Open, hosted by the United States Military<br />

Academy. <strong>UConn</strong> posted a one-two sweep in the 800 as Erin Sales (Windsor<br />

Locks, Conn.) won the event with a time of 2:22.84 <strong>and</strong> Sullivan came in behind<br />

her with a time of 2:24.74. Sullivan also had a successful showing in the 1500,<br />

fi n<strong>is</strong>hing third with a time of 4:50.45. Rogers took second in the 400 with a time
