The Student in Student-Athlete In The Classroom The University of Connecticut women’s track and fi eld and cross country teams has been a success not only in competition, but in the classroom as well. The team has been named a NCAA Division I All-Academic team for the past three years. The main criteria for the award is that the cumulative grade point average for all student-athletes on the Squad List for indoor and/or outdoor track and cross country must be 3.00 of higher. The most recent award went to the 2004-05 team that posted a 3.11 GPA. The program attributes its success to its work ethic and support staff. The team itself devised a plan to help enhance academic performace and promote team unity through organized group study sessions. The plan is fl exible, low-impact and positive. All historical feedback from programs like this have indicated it is successful at achieving the objective set forth. Also helping to achieve the team’s objective are its support staff, including John Miceli of the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. CPIA is a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs with the primary goal of assisting student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics. As academic affairs offi cers, CPIA counselors function as liasons between the athletic and academic communities. Counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, including, but not limited to, Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs. Miceli, along with other members of the athletics staff have been honored with the Outstanding Service Award which is awarded to a support staff member to recognize their commitment and service to University of Connecticut Women’s Cross Country/Track and Field student-athletes, past and present. UConn student-athletes, including Erin Sales, Leah Williams and Melanie Murphy, volunteered their time to help collect non-perishable food items to benefit the Convenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic. CPIA provides student-athletes like Alyssa Evering, Monique Hodges, Melanie Murphy and Rachel Porter with a comfortable and quiet environment to study and bond as a team off the track. In The Community The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fi elds and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience, as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. The women’s track and fi eld/cross country teams have been active in several community service activities, including working a drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross that raised a total of $30,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina earlier this year. The team has also been individually recognized for its efforts as Leah Williams, a senior on this year’s squad, was chosen to represent UConn at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference. Each school is permitted to send one representative to the event and a total of 324 student-athletes out of 1,166 who were nominated took part in last year’s conference. The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The fi ve-day conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group. The conference is an outreach of the NCAA’s highly-successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. Criteria for selection include the student-athletes’ demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes’ potential to benefi t signifi cantly from a leadership development experience. In order to be eligible for the conference, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing, and must have athletics eligibility remaining in the following academic year. 17 UCONNHUSKIES.COM
