UW Oshkosh radio-
TV-film alumni are
shooting for the stars in
California.
At least 35 alumni in California
are bolstering the business of
major networks and companies,
such as ESPN, Sony Imageworks,
Dreamworks, Paramount
Pictures, Turner Network
Television and Universal Studios
on productions like Hollywood
Squares, Fear Factor, Extra! and
The Howie Mandel Show.
Married in spring 2005,
grads Brad Carr (’01) and
Deborah Nelson Carr (’00) are
freelancers in television and film
production.
Deborah, a native of Sand
Creek near Eau Claire, recently
hit it big as the coordinating
producer for the Peabody Award-winning film, Rwanda:
Do Scars Ever Fade?, which documents the 1994 genocide
in Rwanda and the challenge of reconciliation its
people face 10 years later.
“What is so bracing about Deb’s success and the
success of alumni like Bill Povletich, who pack a social
or political charge to their work, is that it proves you
can be rewarded for following your conscience instead
of ignoring it,” said radio-TV-film program coordinator
Doug Heil.
The Bill Brummel Productions crew produced
Rwanda for The History Channel and was honored
on May 16 at the 64th Annual Peabody Awards. Carr
and her husband attended the star-studded event with
the production company executives and other History
Channel executives.
The Peabody Award, considered the broadcast and
cable industry’s most prestigious prize, recognizes distinguished
achievement and meritorious public service
by stations, networks, producing organizations and
individuals.
Carr’s “happy mix” of responsibilities for the
documentary that received one of 32 Peabody awards included
lining up interviews, working with Kinyarwanda
translators, reviewing scripts and tracking down and
securing footage and photographs.
