<strong>Meditation</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>not</strong> a <strong>me<strong>an</strong>s</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>end</strong>. <strong>It</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>both</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>me<strong>an</strong>s</strong> <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> <strong>end</strong>.<br />

Kr<strong>is</strong>hnamurti<br />

COMMUNITY<br />

Although it <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong>o soon for <strong>the</strong> robins <strong>to</strong> nest, flocks of <strong>the</strong>m have been arriving for<br />

weeks. Their calls <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> sound of dripping water floats through open<br />

windows of <strong>the</strong> z<strong>end</strong>o. Old snow gives way <strong>to</strong> stretches of deep, sticky mud.<br />

Yesterday a crew of residents went down <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> river <strong>to</strong> clear out <strong>the</strong> nonnative<br />

elms that grab <strong>to</strong>o much water from <strong>the</strong> cot<strong>to</strong>nwoods. But in spite of<br />

some warming, winter still holds fast, especially at night when mud <strong>an</strong>d<br />

water freeze back in<strong>to</strong> rock-hard ground <strong>an</strong>d slick ice, Careful!<br />

Since <strong>the</strong> daily schedule has returned <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> normal round of meditationwork-eat-sleep,<br />

residents have had time <strong>to</strong> sp<strong>end</strong> <strong>an</strong> hour practicing ritual,<br />

in th<strong>is</strong> case <strong>the</strong> gassho, <strong>the</strong> bow of respect we use so frequently. Fingers<br />

are pressed <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> h<strong>an</strong>ds are held f<strong>is</strong>t d<strong>is</strong>t<strong>an</strong>ce from <strong>the</strong> face <strong>an</strong>d<br />

just opposite <strong>the</strong> nose. The arms are held horizontally with elbows out, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

feet are <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r, or f<strong>is</strong>t d<strong>is</strong>t<strong>an</strong>ce apart. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> Part One. Next, <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

assemblage b<strong>end</strong>s over at <strong>the</strong> hips in a 45 degree <strong>an</strong>gle, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>n <strong>to</strong> fin<strong>is</strong>h,<br />

<strong>the</strong> arms, head, chest r<strong>is</strong>e as a unit back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> original st<strong>an</strong>ding position:<br />

beginning, middle <strong>an</strong>d <strong>end</strong>.<br />

These rituals are a deep <strong>an</strong>d interesting part of practice <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>y never fails<br />

<strong>to</strong> rouse a spectrum of res<strong>is</strong>t<strong>an</strong>ce, <strong>to</strong>ler<strong>an</strong>ce, curiosity <strong>an</strong>d devotion. Not<br />

only do <strong>the</strong>se cus<strong>to</strong>ms come from a radically different time <strong>an</strong>d culture th<strong>an</strong><br />

ours, <strong>the</strong>ir strict requirements irritate our modern sense of personal<br />

au<strong>to</strong>nomy. To bow <strong>to</strong> a<strong>not</strong>her person, ideology, or institution seems deeply<br />

undemocratic, <strong>an</strong>d yet we perform th<strong>is</strong> bow countless times every day. Th<strong>is</strong><br />

creates a rich <strong>an</strong>d fruitful dilemma for us <strong>to</strong> ponder.<br />

Beata S<strong>to</strong>lte, <strong>the</strong> Vice Abbot of Upaya, commented in our seminar that So<strong>to</strong><br />

Zen, more th<strong>an</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r forms of Buddh<strong>is</strong>m, <strong>is</strong> quite scripted <strong>an</strong>d defined in its<br />

outer forms, but at <strong>the</strong> heart of its practice, <strong>the</strong> individual <strong>is</strong> left <strong>to</strong> confront<br />

<strong>the</strong> vast, unwieldy nature of mind with little guid<strong>an</strong>ce. Zen students c<strong>an</strong>

sp<strong>end</strong> years w<strong>an</strong>dering in th<strong>is</strong> wilderness. And <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> a w<strong>is</strong>dom <strong>to</strong> th<strong>is</strong>,<br />

she explained. Ultimately practitioners have <strong>to</strong> teach <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>to</strong> find a<br />

way through <strong>the</strong>ir own experience. During th<strong>is</strong> difficult work, strict form<br />

might actually provide supportive structure.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> daily practice of <strong>the</strong> gassho gives us plenty of opportunity <strong>to</strong> find our<br />

way through <strong>the</strong> experience of ritual. In time, each of us c<strong>an</strong> make <strong>the</strong><br />

passage from regarding ceremony as <strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>noying external requirement, <strong>to</strong><br />

seeing in it a useful internal d<strong>is</strong>cipline, <strong>an</strong>d perhaps eventually <strong>to</strong><br />

embodying it as a slow d<strong>an</strong>ce, a shared community experience of beauty<br />

<strong>an</strong>d oneness. We c<strong>an</strong> face a<strong>not</strong>her, eyes meet, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>n we bow as one in<br />

recognition of our true unity.<br />

For more about <strong>the</strong> me<strong>an</strong>ing <strong>an</strong>d h<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>ry of ritual, see <strong>the</strong> spring '08 <strong>is</strong>sue<br />

of Buddhadharma, "Rethinking Ritual," a review by Norm<strong>an</strong> F<strong>is</strong>cher of <strong>the</strong><br />

book Zen Ritual: Studies of Zen Buddh<strong>is</strong>t Theory in Practice, ed. Steven<br />

Heine <strong>an</strong>d Dale S. Wright.<br />

ENGAGED BUDDHISM<br />

METTA COUNClL - Living with Illness<br />

Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. <strong>to</strong> 12.00 noon--a weekly group for people who are ill, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

partners, caregivers, hospice volunteers, nurses, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>yone interested in exploring<br />

<strong>is</strong>sues around living, sickness aging <strong>an</strong>d death. Beginning around 12:05 p.m. until<br />

1:00 p.m. <strong>the</strong> group engages in contemplative writing. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>not</strong> a writing group per<br />

se but ra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>an</strong> alternative way of exploring what <strong>is</strong> alive for people in <strong>the</strong> moment.<br />

No previous writing experience <strong>is</strong> needed, just a willingness <strong>to</strong> be fully present.<br />

Please call Je<strong>an</strong> at 505-986-8518 or email je<strong>an</strong>@upaya.org for more information.<br />

PRISON OUTREACH PROJECT<br />

Volunteers in <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>is</strong>on Outreach Project offer weekly mindfulness instruction classes<br />

in three correctional facilities: Central New Mexico Adult Correctional Facility, S<strong>an</strong>ta<br />

Fe Youth Development Facility, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> S<strong>an</strong>ta Fe County Adult Detention Facility.<br />

These classes provide inmates with a way <strong>to</strong> reduce <strong>the</strong> stress of <strong>the</strong>ir time in pr<strong>is</strong>on<br />

<strong>an</strong>d <strong>to</strong> encourage a shift in thought <strong>an</strong>d behavior patterns away from violence <strong>an</strong>d<br />

harming. Studies show that th<strong>is</strong> training reduces violent behavior among inmates as<br />

well as between inmates <strong>an</strong>d corrections staff, preparing <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> re-enter society<br />

without relapsing in<strong>to</strong> addiction <strong>an</strong>d <strong>end</strong>ing back in pr<strong>is</strong>on.<br />

Persons interested in working “inside” with pr<strong>is</strong>on residents are warmly welcomed.<br />

Volunteers may choose <strong>to</strong> train <strong>an</strong>d work in <strong>the</strong> S<strong>an</strong>ta Fe County Youth Development<br />

Center or in <strong>the</strong> SF County Adult Detention Center. There <strong>is</strong> a defined training<br />

program, in which a volunteer works as a co-facilita<strong>to</strong>r with a trainer at weekly group<br />

meetings. Volunteers who choose <strong>to</strong> work with youths are invited <strong>to</strong> contact Sus<strong>an</strong><br />

Benjamin at ArtTherapy@aol.com; those who desire <strong>to</strong> work with groups of adult<br />

inmates should contact Ray Olson at n<strong>an</strong>rayols@aol.com. A volunteer commitment of<br />

several months’ <strong>to</strong> one year’s services <strong>is</strong> requested.

Since <strong>the</strong> first of th<strong>is</strong> year, a number of inmates from around <strong>the</strong> country have written<br />

asking for information about meditation or Zen practice. Several of <strong>the</strong>se inmates<br />

have requested participation in our Pen-Pal Program which provides information<br />

about spiritual practice, meditation <strong>an</strong>d Zen practice, <strong>an</strong>d ass<strong>is</strong>t<strong>an</strong>ce in setting up a<br />

Buddh<strong>is</strong>t meditation group in <strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>is</strong>on. In <strong>the</strong> past eighteen months, 15 volunteer<br />

S<strong>an</strong>gha members have engaged in correspondence with pr<strong>is</strong>on residents. The hypermasculine<br />

ethos of pr<strong>is</strong>on life often makes sharing personal thoughts <strong>an</strong>d feelings<br />

with a<strong>not</strong>her m<strong>an</strong> taboo, so we are especially in need of female volunteers for <strong>the</strong><br />

Pen-Pal Program as some inmates feel much more comfortable talking about <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

inner feelings of <strong>an</strong>ger <strong>an</strong>d <strong>is</strong>olated loneliness with a wom<strong>an</strong>. If you would like <strong>to</strong><br />

participate as a volunteer in <strong>the</strong> Pen-Pal program, please call Ray at 505/986-5835 or<br />

email him at n<strong>an</strong>rayols@aol.com<br />
