Ton n i Be a r s Creating bears is a family affair for the Dutch teddy bear artist, Marjan Jorritsma. Her studio is named for her beloved brother, Tonni, and Marjan makes and designs each and every animal by herself, excepting the help of her husband, Reinder, and her mother. The artist began her career with a doll shop into which a teddy bear appeared one day, and then she realized where lay her true passion. She hasn't turned back since. Her bears and friends are limited in the truest sense: she can only make as many as she can find the material to create. For that reason, each of her teddy bear and mouse pincushions is different from the other. And Suzy the Elephant and Moor the Bear are editions of only five. L o l a a n d Po k a Possessing smugness only a cat could master, Lola and Poka both walk the fine line between adorable and petulant. Both are fully-articulated, swivel head cats with weighed torsos to insure a comfortable seating position, and each wears a polka-dotted skirt with overall straps. Pink furred Lola. 10". A mohair white mouse with felt ears and paws, bead eyes and nose, perches atop a neatly stuffed calico pincushion decorated with tiny buttons and pins. Is it his soft white mohair, his felt paw pads or the fact that he's weighted to stand on his own? Or is it simply his loving expression made so adorable by a double jointed neck allowing for "inquisitive" neck craning? 18". TB-585. $325. T h e Te d d y Be a r Do l l , A Bit Ol d, A Bit Ne w Back about 1920, German doll and teddy bear makers came up with the novel idea of combining the teddy bear and the doll. Few have survived. Dollmasters has located a stock of antique doll heads, made of modeled celluloid just like the originals, and commissioned Karen Meer to create teddy bear style bodies for them. She has done just that to fabulous result. Each has huggable bear body with 100% German mohair coats trimmed with antique brass buttons, and their hands and feet are of fine wool felt. And if the more real the emotion the more beloved the bear, then Ellen Kislinbury bears, like Riley, must be among the most beloved ever. With a double jointed neck Riley is able to achieve every emotion from sad, to curious, to hopeful and all places in between.
