The Brownie Band 

Utilizing the Scottish highland folktales of his 

maternal ancestory, a then unknown Canadian 

artist named Palmer Cox created a group of 

playful sprites known as the Brownies and he 

introduced them to the world in February of 1883 

in a children’s periodical, St. Nicholas Magazine. 

Like the greats, Rose O’Neill and Johnny Gruelle, 

Palmer Cox filled his world with a wide array of 

fanciful characters, and like those greats, Palmer 

Cox now finds his works immortalized by the 

contemporary great R John Wright. 

Each Brownie is an entirely hand-made wool-felt 

doll from R John Wright and each is specially 

designed with heavy-wire feet to stand unaided. 

Each is a numbered limited edition of just 250 

and comes in a fanciful presentation box with a 

certificate of authenticity.

First appearing in the 1887 

"The Brownies, Their Book." 

by Palmer Cox, the whimsical 

Dude is one of the most 

recognizable Brownies ever, 

and why shouldn’t he be, for 

he is the one who shows the other Brownies what 

to wear, though honestly, they don’t seem to 

listen much. 

The Brownie Dude is made of the finest all-wool 

felt and wears a natty outfit consisting of cuffed 

trousers, waistcoat, stiffened collar with bow tie, 

and swallow-tailed jacket as well as a matching 

top hat and, of course, a hand-carved wood cane 

and a gold plated monocle.

reached her tenth anniversary of doll-making, but looking at her 

work you would think she's been designing dolls for centuries.

of authenticity.

With a single enigmatic expression, Emma symbolizes 

Monte Dragone perfectly. Her amazingly sculpted face is 

modern, but at the same time classic, with its freckles, 

pouty lips, deeply inset glass eyes and mohair wig. Such 

is the case with the costume as well, with newer red and 

bronze polka dotted design in a classic dress pattern with 

antiqued lace trim. Truly, Emma is perfect for modern and

Recalling the classic European character 

dolls of the early 20th century Federica is, 

nevertheless, definitely her own person. 

Expressively sculpted. the all-bisque girl is a 

wonderful cabinet size, with brown glass-eyes,

With facial sculpting that tells a tale, 

the orphan boy and girl from Monte 

Dragone possess unique facial sculpting 

that captures them not in a moment 

of “posed” happiness but rather in an 

instant of realistic reaction. Between the 

red-haired girl, Chicca, with her tongue 

curled across the upper-lip in a moment of 

mouth-watering expectation, and the blonde 

boy, Peter, with his skeptical grimace, it 

is quite obvious who is being offered the 

cookie, and who the vegetables. Both are 

fully-jointed all-bisque dolls with hand-made

From the majestic forests of the Pacific Northwest 

comes the work of Xenis family. Matriarch Marlene 

is joined by her daughters Tania and Jesse in the 

endeavor of endearing wood carvings. Previously 

known for whimsical clowns and elegant fashion 

ladies, the Xenis team of artisans has only 

recently branched out to storybook dolls with 

amazing success and even the quickest of glances 

shows why.

From the majestic forests of the Pacific Northwest comes the amazing 

wooden art of the Xenis family. Fashion dolls led way to storybook 

dolls which in turn have led to nostalgic Americana in the form 

of The Little Tramp who "does his best at everything, never 

with success, but always with hope". And with music, too, 

because he has an internal music box. The entirely handcarved 

and hand-painted Little Tramp is fully-articulated, and 

wears artist-made wool trousers, worn tuxedo jacket, cotton shirt 

and a silk tie. His shoes are carved from wood with leather ties in 

them. He comes complete with his hat and cane. The Little Tramp is

D o n k e y -Ea r Pinocchio 

Depicting a time, later in his story, when Pinocchio has made awful choices, 

the Donkey-Ear Pinocchio could easily be the same Pinocchio head with 

added Donkey ears and a tail, but thanks to Xenis, he is so much more. 

Donkey-Ear Pinocchio is entirely different sculpt featuring, not only different 

hair carving, but also more contemplative, regretful eyes. Furthermore he 

is a limited edition of only 175 pieces, 75 less than the first Pinocchio. 16".

From across the vast Pacific ocean, 

Dollmasters presents a series of traditional 

wooden Japanese play dolls known as Kokeshi. 

Although new to our catalog, the kokeshi 

doll tradition is centuries-old in Japan. The 

carved wooden dolls seem initially simplistic 

in design, but closer examination reveals 

incredibly detailed carving such as hair accents 

and ruffles in clothing. Most of the Kokeshi 

dolls are produced from Japanese dogwood 

trees, well known for their white bark and fine 

grain. All carving and painting is hand-done by 

experienced artisans.

over-sized nose, black bead eyes, and oversized

by German artists Jack & Marion Finhold. Eduard 

is further highlighted by the finest mohair fur, and a 

wool felt green cape with matching orange and green

chestnuts. Apparently, Chester, a mouse sparsely

small glass shoe button eyes, and is wearing a

Pet e r Wo l f 

So dedicated is Peter Wolf, the German doll artist, 

that he seldom leaves his studio except in search 

of the rare antique silks and laces that he uses to 

costume his dolls. The artist carves each of his 

precious dolls entirely by hand, applies the earlystyle 

enamel eyes, and then hand-paints in an 

exacting antique manner. His specialty is the English 

wooden dolls of the 18th century known as "Queen 

Anne", and his in-depth research ensures that each 

is made exactly like the originals. With jointed hips 

to allow each doll to bow in an appropriate courtly 

manner, painted creamy complexions with dot 

lashes, blush spots on cheeks and outlined lips, a 

few even with beauty spots!

The Maryland artist began her career after seeing a 

fine antique wooden doll that she couldn't acquire and 

deciding "Well, I can make one just like that". But that 

thought is where she separates from others with the same 

idea. Because this woman is truly gifted. And her artistic 

gift is coupled with a zealous desire to learn every single 

detail about the history, background, costume and social 

environment of the doll she will create. Honored with 

awards from prestige societies in the wide art world as well 

as the particular world of dolls, she mostly creates her dolls 

for special commission. Dollmasters has commissioned 

the artist to create two outstanding examples that we 

offer here. Yes, certainly each is one-of-a-kind. 

W o o d e n Do l l In s p i r e d b y 1779 

P ainting

In the 1779 painting by William Hoare that 

hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, young 

daughter Mary is portrayed showing her doll 

to her father Christopher Anstey. It is this 

doll that has been created by Susan Parris 

in a fine wood that is entirely carved and 

painted by the artist with unique glazes and 

paints that she has developed. The doll has 

brown hand-blown glass eyes, authenticallystyled 

coiffure of the era and her costume is 

hand-sewn using 18th century draping and 

sewing techniques. Beneath her silk taffeta 

French court gown is a matching petticoat 

trimmed with ruched silk and vintage silver 

wire, silk pannier, reed hoop, vintage lace 

shift and orange silk pockets. Her shoes 

are painted and she is posed on a custom 

walnut stand. A certificate from the artist 

accompanies the dolls, as does her custom

"Entirely made by me from the inside out" is how the Maryland self-taught artist and living historian describes 

her work. It is a creed that she lives by. This doll, inspired by a painting of an anonymous woman, painter 

unknown, circa 1740, represents a lady wearing elegant day wear of the era. The hand-sculpted and carved face, 

hands and shoe lasts are attached to a wire armature within a soft linen body; she has black glass eyes and black 

mohair wig. She wears a silk sacque with linen lining that is trimmed with recycled white mink and mohair to 

simulate ermine. Although the underpinnings are not seen, the artist, true to her creed, spares no detail; the lady 

wears canvas stays, white linen shirt and stockings, ivory antique wool petticoat with pink selvage, antique linen 

stomacher, green silk pocket and ribbon garters. Because her gown is removable, you can display her as you wish. 

Her silk slippers with leather soles, vintage pearl earrings, cotton and lace fichu and linen cap with Valenciennes

Ton n i Be a r s 

Creating bears is a family affair for the Dutch teddy bear 

artist, Marjan Jorritsma. Her studio is named for her 

beloved brother, Tonni, and Marjan makes and designs 

each and every animal by herself, excepting the help of 

her husband, Reinder, and her mother. The artist began 

her career with a doll shop into which a teddy bear 

appeared one day, and then she realized where lay her 

true passion. She hasn't turned back since. Her bears 

and friends are limited in the truest sense: she can only 

make as many as she can find the material to 

create. For that reason, each of her teddy bear 

and mouse pincushions is different from the 

other. And Suzy the Elephant and Moor the 

Bear are editions of only five.

Back about 1920, German doll and teddy bear makers came up 

with the novel idea of combining the teddy bear and the doll. 

Few have survived. Dollmasters has located a stock of antique 

doll heads, made of modeled celluloid just like the originals, 

and commissioned Karen Meer to create teddy bear style bodies 

for them. She has done just that to fabulous result. Each has 

huggable bear body with 100% German mohair coats trimmed 

with antique brass buttons, and their hands and feet are of

person as Berdine Creedy describes her 

new line of dolls as "really exciting", you just

The Expression Dolls of Ankie Daanen 

"A good doll stays in the memory". So says the 

Dutch artist, Ankie Daanen, now in her 20th 

year of doll-making, and now making her grand 

appearance in Dollmasters catalog. 

It is true that her dolls stopped us in our tracks 

when we spotted them at an exhibition. Beyond 

admiring the artistic skill in their production, each 

of us viewing the dolls brought our own experience 

and emotions to the moment. To each of us the 

dolls meant something different. And that is what 

Ankie Daanen seeks to accomplish in her doll art. 

She does it admirably. 

The specifics of her doll-making are told by the 

artist "Once I have sculpted the basic models of 

my new dolls, I make the molds. After casting, I 

sculpt them again. This means that each doll is a 

unique and one-of-a-kind piece of art. I am also 

inspired by my love of fabrics, lace and trims. I 

use my imagination and fantasy when creating 

a costume for the doll. Form, construction and 

draping: I do it all myself. 

Her artistic talents are evident. Her unique vision 

is more difficult to define. That may explain why 

"Dare to Dream" appeared on the May 2008 

cover of Dolls Magazine and why the artist's work 

continues to be the most sought-after throughout 

the world. Each of these award-winning dolls is

The talented American artist, Elizabeth Cooper, 

lives in a small canal town in rural New York, in the 

same house that her ancestors built six generations 

ago. This environment has inspired her reverence 

for things from the past, and her dolls, with their 

uniquely-sculpted expressions and vintage costumes 

reflect that reverence. 

Each of her dolls are hand-sculpted of polymer clay 

(no mold is used), each has tiny black matte eyes, 

and each is hand-painted, dressed and wigged by 

Elizabeth Cooper herself. Each doll is signed and 

dated on the foot, and each has a signed paper 

mache tag hidden on their back.

a vintage postcard addressed to Jules 

Molinier for whom artist Karen Meer 

named this bear. There is no proof Jules 

Molinier belongs to the French Foreign 

Legion as the bear is, but the postcard is 

addressed to a military hospital in Algiers, 

birthplace of the Legion. The bear, whose 

mohair Meer describes as "rusty gold" wears 

a military wool coat adorned with authentic 

French military and Foreign Legion ribbons 

and badges.
