Guidance for Centres
Regarding the Use of
Blastocyst Transfer in
Treatment
The WGNDRT has recognised that the practice of embryo transfer at the
blastocyst stage has become widespread. Work on cattle and sheep shows
that prolonged embryo culture followed by blastocyst transfer can, in
some cases, give rise to neonatal problems, notably increased birthweight
and fetal abnormalities. There is no evidence so far of similar
changes following the transfer of human blastocysts. Nevertheless the
WGNDRT felt that centres should pay particular attention to the
outcome of this new form of treatment and caution patients accordingly
in their patient information.
