Liner Notes for Quintus McCormick Blues Band Put It On Me! Quintus McCormick’s acclaimed Delmark debut from 2009 Hey Jodie! was one of the best soul-blues albums of the new millennium’s first decade. Put It on Me! is an apt title for this diverse collection of 14 fresh Quintus originals. Fans rightfully expect, at the least, an equivalent follow up to a successful debut. But Quintus has exceeded the promise of Hey Jodie! in every facet - singing, playing, and writing - not an easy thing to do, especially in less than two years, even for a college trained musician like Quintus who scored his first hit at age 51. With impeccably supple support by his working band - John Chorney - a keyboard star in the making - and the eloquent, elastic rhythm section of bassist Vic Jackson and drummer Jeremiah Thomas who provide the indispensable versatility for Quintus’ musical palate, Quintus put it on himself to surpass his auspicious debut. The clarity of purpose demonstrated by Quintus and his musical cohorts exudes all that is genuine in the best music: passion, poise, and panache. Except for some gospel-fueled transcendence with the gently swaying “Hallelujah” that closes the set on a note of gratitude, the album’s twin streams of inspiration are tough urban blues and silky, ebullient Windy City soul. Quintus examines the vicissitudes of modern romance from a variety of angles. On the blues side there’s the bracing irony of the hard rocking Jimmy Reed-like “You Just Using Me” (“...like I’m using you”), a blues-bump of reassurance reminiscent of Z.Z. Hill with “I Got It Babe”; more irony with the smoldering “The Blues Has Been Good to Me,” an epiphany recognizing that, in the end, all experience is positive; a jagged boogie grinder of postbreak-up confusion and emotional paralysis, “Don’t Know What to Do”; a sinewy shuffle in praise of a special lady, “Sadie”; the funky title track that extols his determination and resolve in romantic matters; and two deep slow blues: “How Quick We Forget,” evocative of Ray Charles’ “Drown in My Own Tears” but with the added touch of Quintus’ snarling, aggressive stringbending, his fiercest of the set, and a plaintive all points bulletin on a MIA Personnel: Quintus McCormick, vocals, guitar John Chorney, keyboards Vick Jackson, bass Jeremiah Thomas, drums Billy Branch, harmonica (1, 6, 8) lover, “Lady Blue,” with flickering fills and jazzy chords suggestive of T-Bone Walker. The disparity in his playing on these two tracks is indicative of Quintus’ broadly evolving style. The languorous “Change” may be the album’s most powerful slow tune - a five year chronicle of inertia, ennui, and despair infused with weary vocals and trenchant licks - an engrossing dirge that has more than one possible interpretation. Before his move to Chicago in the late ’70s, Quintus lived in Detroit. Although he was initially enamored of rock, the influence of Motown had to have been pervasive while growing up in Detroit; however, Quintus’ dual muses of soul are Earth, Wind, and Fire’s infectious amalgam of funk, jazz, and adult pop (“Say Lover” and “Talk Baby”) and the bright and brassy sophisticated soul of Tyrone Davis (“Loveland” and “Same Old Feeling”). Such an expanse of styles requires a skilled vocalist and Quintus is up to the task with his distinctively fluid range that smoothly goes from a warm, sonorous croon to a cathartic wail to gritty testifying. Quintus is a beacon of hope for the future and a major player on the durable soul-blues scene which traces its origins back to the 1960s when prominent Chicago artists like Junior Wells, Magic Sam, and James Cotton added soul to their live repertoires even though in the years to come a number of notable soul-blues albums would sadly slip through the cracks. With only two albums to his credit, Quintus McCormick’s maturity, confidence, conviction, and triple-threat talent make him one of contemporary Chicago’s brightest stars. -Thomas J. Jody Williams and Jimmy Dawkins are two of the main architects and masters of the famed, Chicago West Side sound that features that wild and eerie, minor key guitar that has influenced so many. Billy Flynn is the torchbearer of that sound and is the glue to countless blues bands today and has an encyclopedic blues mind and diverse repertoire. He has been backing Jody and Jimmy for years, and knows their unique styles like no other. Jody Williams - Jody’s impressive guitar can be heard on many ‘50’s/’60’s Chess recordings with Bo Diddley, Billy Boy Arnold, Howlin’ Wolf, including his own instrumental masterpieces, “Lucky Lou!” & “Moaning For Molasses”. Jimmy Dawkins - Dawkins has one of the most distinctive guitar sounds of all - a heavy, dark, slashing sound that is like no other. He has many influential recordings in his long career, including the killer late ‘60/early ‘70 albums on Delmark Records: Fast Fingers, All For Business (with Otis Rush,) and Blisterstring. Billy Flynn - Flynn has led his own band since the 80’s in Wisconsin and Chicago and can be found making so many bands better. He currently is the lead guitarist with countless bands, including Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Cash Box Kings, and the Special 20’s. He was the guitarist creating the famous Chess sound in the popular recent movie on Chess Records, Cadillac Records.
