In honor of Clean Feed’s 10-year anniversary, many of their
Chicago-centric titles are on sale for $10.99 (Unless otherwise marked, thru 7/31/11)
Portugal’s Clean Feed label is celebrating their tenth anniversary this year; quite the milestone for any label, let alone one dedicated to releasing contemporary jazz. Since its
inception, Clean Feed has become synonymous with quality, not only in music but in packaging, something of a rarity these days as music has become yet another disposable
commodity. Like our own venerable independent jazz record label, Clean Feed can count many Chicagoans among their roster of international talent. Living legend Anthony
Braxton’s Duets 1995 (CF079) finds the saxophonist in a duo with bassist Joe Fonda playing original compositions as well as some standards, showcasing Braxton's truly
unique take on the tradition. Chicago institution Ken Vandermark has released two trio records on Clean Feed, Rebus (CF083) with guitarist Joe Morris and Luther Gray on
drums and Triple Play (019) featuring the stellar rhythm section of Nate McBride (bass) and Curt Newton (drums). This rhythm section is reprised on Free Advice (CF098) and
joined by the exceptional keyboardist Pandelis Karayorgis. In addition to known players on the modern jazz/improvised music scene, Clean Feed has the proud distinction of
putting out many titles by emerging talents. The Flatlands Collective's "Maatjes" (CF127), a project of Amsterdam's Jorrit Dijkstra, features many Chicago luminaries including
Jason Roebke, Frank Rosaly, James Falzone, Fred Longberg-Holm and Jeb Bishop. Bishop can also be heard on Pluto Junkyard (CF141) a collective of New Orleans and
Chicago improvisers (known as the Lucky 7s), and on Lucky 7 tenorman Keefe Jackson’s debut as a leader, Seeing You See (CF176). Matt Bauder’s 2010 release ADayIn
Pictures (CF210) was an artistic and critical high point from a saxophonist of exceptional skill and promise. Labels like Clean Feed are an invaluable part of a thriving music
community and now, perhaps more than ever, it’s essential to support independent labels as they continue to support independent music.
