Better Late Than Never
Inside this issue:
Well as you may
remember (a long time
ago) back in October
2004 the first edition of
Waratah Industries
Timber Tales was
released. After a long
hiatus it has now
returned to update you
in what has happened
in the past couple of
years and to also keep
you up to date in what is
happening in the
present. In future issues
(hopefully they won’t
take two years to rerelease),
we hope to
give you an incite into
some of the Employees
and staff working at
Waratah and to also
give you some handy
hints about working
with Timber products.
So grab a cup of coffee,
sit back and enjoy !!!!
Hardwood Pegs for All Stakes
Product Profile 3
Waratah is heading
into the second year
of producing survey
pegs for All Stakes.
All Stakes is a
company that
contracts out and
manufactures survey
pegs and sells them
through hardware
stores such as
Bunnings.
As the majority of
Survey pegs are used
within the warmer
months, starting now
and all through the
summer months we
are expecting to be
kept busy producing
this product. Survey
pegs can be used for
a number of reasons
and are mainly sold
as tree or tomato
stakes.
Waratah currently
use a number of
machines to get the
timber to the
required length
and diameter
and have two
pointing machines.
These
machines vary
slightly in the way they
make a point on the ends
with one being rounded
and the other square.
So next time you are out
buying stakes to hold up
a tree you have planted
or for your tomatoes,
think, could I be using a
stake that Waratah has
produced??
Ian’s News
Well what a year so far with
the fire in February which
destroyed our moulder and
we had to find an alternative
way of producing dressed
material until a replacement
moulder was found. True to
Waratah employee’s abilities
we found a way and did not
let our customers down.
We had the much publicised
accident in which one of our
employees injured his hand
on a docking saw, he has
returned to work and is now
operating the saws again.
We have continued with our
great relationships with the
timber processors in the local
area like Hyne Tumbarumba,
Weyerhaeuser Tumut and
Ausply at Forest Hill to name
just a few.
We have had 2 of our
employees working at Ausply
when they needed extra
people and it has worked well
for all concerned and showed
that given a chance what skills
people with a disability can
bring to the work place.
We are looking forward to the
arrival of our new moulder at
the end of September. The
new moulder will also allow
us to produce a wider
range dressed products and
being a digital setup for sizing
our change over times will be
“True to Waratah
employee’s abilities “
much shorter.
We are also awaiting news of
possible grant funding. If
successful, we have applied
for a new docking system.
This will improve our productivity
and also relief some
of the manual handling that
we have.
Well that’s it for now and
remember if you need timber
Waratah are the people to
talk too!!
Fire Destroyed Moulder
In February of this year, you
may of seen Waratah hit the
news. Following staff working
a weekend shift, a fire , caused
by an electrical fault and a
build up of saw dust, destroyed
the moulder in which they had
been working on.
Luckily, as no one was on sight
when the fire broke out, the
automatic sprinkler and alarm
system carried out its role and
the Fire Brigade were alerted.
The fire was quickly put out
and no damage was sustained
to any other area of the
machine shed. Unfortunately
the moulder was damaged
beyond repair.
Since the fire Waratah has
been using a temporary
moulder and are pleased to say
that a new moulder will be
arriving soon.
Moulders are difficult
machinery and are not
produced within Australia. The
New moulder is currently in
transportation from overseas
and is capable of running 65
metres of timber per minute
compared to 25 metres per
minute which is being run at
the moment and will also cut
the set up time down from 3-4
hours to 20 minutes as it will be
all done digitally,

Work Experience at Ausply
In February of this year, an
opportunity arose for a
couple of Waratah
employees to participate in a
Work experience program at
Ausply. Ausply is an
Australian owned and
operated plywood and
veneer manufacturer
located in Wagga Wagga
and has been operational
since 1958.
Stephen Gould and Kevin
Ritzau have been regularly
attending Ausply since
February and have been
given a great opportunity to
extend their skills in working
with a differing range of
timbers products compared
to those produced at
Waratah.
Stephen and Kevin worked
in varying areas and stages
of production of ply product
from puttying sheets to
assisting in the cutting and
stacking of finished
products.
Although they have
returned to Waratah, we
hope to extend the Working
relationship with Ausply to
continue Work experience
opportunities.
