CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Part of the reason for Kurrajong Waratah’s growth
this year and over the past five years has been the
service funding opportunities provided through
the NSW State Government’s “Stronger Together”
10 year disability services strategy.
Stage 1 of the strategy (2006-2010) has put in
place across NSW a range of new services that
have benefited people with disability and their
families. These have included pathways for
students leaving school, additional respite care
services, group home supported accommodation,
early intervention and additional therapy.
Kurrajong Waratah has benefited from our
successful tenders to provide some of these new
services. Most notably there has been new group
home supported accommodation to help clear
some of the backlog and crisis demand for people
with a disability with high support needs.
The Disability Strategy’s next stage (2011-2016)
is still being finalised by the State Government.
Importantly the strategy does have bi-party
support and therefore should not be affected by
the forthcoming NSW State election due in 2011.
The next five years of the Disability Services
Strategy will have a stronger focus on earlier
assistance and intervention for families.
This will include funding for other supported
accommodation services such as community
living and in home care and support, additional
therapy, respite care services and early childhood
intervention.
Kurrajong Waratah supports the need for these
additional initiatives to address the increasing
demand for services, rectifying gaps in services
and the need to address previous deficiencies in
the funding of disability services.
Another important opportunity for the Disability
Service sector which has gained increasing
support and prominence over the past 12 months
is the concept of a National Disability Insurance
Scheme (NDIS).
Such a scheme would entitle people with disability
to receive the long term care and support they
need to engage and participate in community
life. As an entitlement (or rights scheme) it would
guarantee for people with a disability the provision
The strength behind our
continued achievements is
our mutual commitment
to work together to make
a difference.
Mr Michael Kennedy OAM
LIFE MEMBER AND CHAIRMAN
The past year has been another strong period of
growth and excellent performance for Kurrajong
Waratah. This created good opportunities,
outcomes and security for people with a disability
and peace of mind for their families and carers.
The demand for Kurrajong Waratah’s service is
ever increasing. With such growth and demand it
is important that our services and activities remain
both focused and relevant. For this reason the
Board and the management team reviewed the
organisation’s Mission and Vision statement earlier
in the year. This was to ensure that these two
important statements, which are the key reference
points for all current and future activities and
proposals the Board may consider for Kurrajong
Waratah, were still relevant.
With a slight amendment to recognise both the
importance and the need to further support
parent/carers, the Mission Statement (what we
do) is: Kurrajong Waratah provides services
to children and adults with disabilities and
support for their parent/carers.
And our Vision (where we want to be) is:
Kurrajong Waratah will continue to be at
the forefront of delivering responsive and
innovative quality disability services.
of early childhood intervention services, therapy,
equipment, accommodation support, assistance
with participation in the community, in the
workplace and at school based on the person’s
need.
It is a relatively simple idea but requires further
evaluation. The scheme could be funded under a
similar arrangement to the Medicare Levy ensuring
that everyone in Australia is covered in the event
that they are born with or acquire a disability.
The NDIS Scheme would certainly reduce or
eliminate the exhaustion and anxiety suffered by
many people with a disability and their families
and carers as they battle the multitude of
Departments, programmes, red tape, paper work
and waiting lists to get their needs met.
Kurrajong Waratah has signed up as supporters
of the scheme and have joined the campaign
to make the scheme a reality. More details are
available at: www.natdis.com.au .
As is usual in our Annual Report, we cannot
attempt to capture or do justice to the many
achievements and initiatives that occurred over
the period. I do however recommend to you to
take the time to read the various service area
reports from our management team.
Once again I take this opportunity to acknowledge
the input and work of my fellow Board Directors,
our CEO, Deputy CEO, Managers, staff and
volunteers of Kurrajong Waratah.
The strength behind our continued achievements
is our mutual commitment to work together to
make a difference.
I thank all our government funding partners, both
Commonwealth and State, for your continued
trust and support of Kurrajong Waratah to deliver
excellence.
Finally, I extend our appreciation to our
community and business donors, supporters and
sponsors, local councils and the media for your
assistance and support in helping us deliver our
services.
CEO’S REPORT
and other processes are all documented, that
service standards.
Mr Steve Jaques
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
The consolidation and growth of Kurrajong
Waratah services has again been very strong.
Kurrajong Waratah’s services to people with a
disability and their families continued to grow in
this reporting period which followed a 7% growth
from the previous period.
As a high performing organisation, it is anticipated
that the expansion of our services will continue
into the future as we respond to the increasing
demands for services and to the changing needs
of our clients and their families.
Whilst this growth has been robust and
comprehensive across all service areas, it has
brought with it the challenge of ensuring that
our service delivery is both sustainable and
measurable.
During the year, a position of Quality Assurance
Coordinator was created to develop a stronger
quality framework within the organisation to
underpin this growth and our services. This
position will ensure sustainability in our service
excellence and best practices as we continue to
grow and expand.
A key objective for this position has been to
ensure that our services’ policies, procedures
To also help ensure sustainability of our services
and to prepare for the future growth of Kurrajong
Waratah, we are also in the process of developing
a Workforce Planning Strategy. This strategy
will include a strong training and development
framework for staff. The training and development
framework will ensure staff are able to acquire
and develop their skills through recognised
training and courses. It will also enable staff to be
recognised for their existing skills, experience and
qualifications.
It is essential for staff who work for Kurrajong
Waratah to be well trained and skilled to deliver
our quality services and innovations. It is also
important to develop in our staff values based
on care and respect, integrity and trust, initiative,
creativity and a strong performance from working
together.
The first stage of the training and development
framework for staff is in place. All new permanent
fulltime and part-time staff recruited by Kurrajong
Waratah are now required to undertake four
core training models from the Certificate III and
Certificate IV in Community Services (Disability)
Course. The four modules will be required to
be completed by new staff during their six
months probationary employment period and
will be delivered in conjunction with a Registered
Training Organisation with extensive experience in
disability services.
The next stage of the staff training and
development framework will be to provide
existing staff with the opportunity to obtain the full
Certificate IV in Community Services (Disability)
and/or higher qualifications.
This workforce planning strategy is seen to be
critical to Kurrajong Waratah’s ability to recruit
and retain a stable skilled workforce to deliver our
current and future services.
In NSW, it has been estimated that 38,000 new
staff will be needed in the community care and
disability sector by 2014 due to expected service
growth and natural employment attrition such as
retirements and career changes.
Our Workforce Planning Strategy is therefore
targeted to position and strengthen Kurrajong
Waratah as an ‘employer of choice’ through
a comprehensive and strong learning and
development framework for staff.
Over the reporting period, Kurrajong Waratah’s
services have continued to support many people
with a disability and their family carers across the
Riverina and Murray Regions both directly through
our services and indirectly through our community
capacity building activities and the support we
provide to similar disability organisations in the
regions.
Our community education, promotional and
fundraising events have again been very
successful. Staff and Board members have
regularly attended and spoken to community
groups, our supporters, attended meetings with
businesses and government departments and
generally used any opportunity to proactively
advocate the needs of people with disability and
their families.
These actions and the delivery of our wide and
varied services continue to promote and enable
people with disability to be involved in the social
and economic fabric of their community as active
citizens rather than passive consumers.
Particularly pleasing this year has been Kurrajong
Waratah’s service approach to engage with,
support and deliver increased services to
Aboriginal people and among communities
of people from different cultural and linguistic
backgrounds across the Riverina and Murray
Regions.
Through our work and our relationships with
Councils, other agencies, community groups,
businesses and individuals, we have continued
to raise community awareness about people with
disability and Kurrajong Waratah’s services.
I would like to thank the Board of Directors for
their commitment and strong governance to
support the results that are contained in this
Annual Report. To the Chairman and the Treasurer,
my appreciation for your personal counsel
on many matters during the year. I thank my
Deputy CEO, Ray Carroll and Managers for your
initiatives and your responses to challenges and
opportunities as they occurred.
Finally to our hard working staff and volunteers,
I believe our strength as an organisation is in our
integrity and in our ability to deliver quality and
responsive services to people with a disability and
their families. This could not occur without your
efforts. Thank you.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Mr Peter Perkins
TREASURER
I have pleasure in presenting the Treasurer’s
Report and the Financial Statements for the year
1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010.
A significant indicator of the growth of the
organisation over the year is the increase in
turnover to $21M ($21,000,000) which is 9.5%
greater than the turnover for the previous year.
Total funding from the State and Commonwealth
Governments for operational purposes was
$11.7M ($11,700,000) or 56% of total income,
while income from our own business operations
totalled $6.1M or 29% of total income. Gross
fundraising and bequests amounted to $684K
($684,000).
The outstanding performance of Business Support
Services, Community Accommodation Services
and Community Support Services enabled the
organisation to end the year with an operating
surplus of $1.8M. Net fundraising of $419K and
$1.25M profit on the sale of assets (principally
the sale of the previous recycling site in Chaston
Street) greatly contributed to the total surplus.
The financial success of the year has allowed the
organisation to rebuild its cash reserves which
were depleted from expenditure in excess of $7M
on the new recycling facilities on the new site in
Chaston Street. This expenditure was financed
from our reserves supplemented by a loan of
$2.4M from our bankers. The strong financial
performance over the reporting period has
enabled an accelerated repayment program to the
bank to be adopted by the Board of Directors. An
outstanding amount of $900K now remains owing.
It is of vital strategic importance that the
organisation has a strong asset base and cash
reserves to meet issues in the future, some of
which we are currently aware. Australia has
an ageing population. Many of our clients and
employees are ageing as are many of the carers
and in many cases it is the ageing carers caring
for ageing sons and daughters. The organisation
must have the financial resources to meet the
challenges these issues present as part of the
appropriate planning for the future. The financial
measures described above have not lead to
any reduction in the level of service provision to
our clients – in fact the opposite is constantly
occurring.
As mentioned previously, all sectors of the
organisation have performed exceptionally well
this year.
Work Solutions had an outstanding year. Work
Solutions is the service gateway for people
with a disability into Kurrajong Waratah’s adult
services and arranges for the placement of people
into our Skills Options day services and into
the supported employment businesses which
Kurrajong Waratah operates. As part of the
Disability Employment Network (DEN) services
funded by the Commonwealth Department of
Education Employment and Workplace Relations
(DEEWR), they also place and support people
into employment of their choice in a range of
businesses in the wider Riverina and Murray area
communities. Currently they are supporting over
180 people with disability in these businesses.
Work Solutions is one of the highest performing
DEN service providers in Australia.
Waratah Industries finished the year with a surplus
of $113K compared to a $14K loss last year.
This is the first time in many years that Waratah
Mrs Sharyn Atherton
FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION MANAGER
Industries has achieved such a great positive
result.
Kurrajong Recyclers is capitalising on the
advantages of the new plant as teething problems
have been overcome, to finish the year with a fine
result of a $313K surplus from processing up to
16,000 tonnes of recycling materials.
Kurrajong Business Services is a complex
sector with ten small diverse businesses located
at Wagga Wagga, West Wyalong, Narrandera
and Leeton. There were some very strong
performances notably from Cypress Laundry
and Linen Service in Narrandera and both
Spins Coffee Shop and Spins Recycling in West
Wyalong. While it is to the obvious advantage
of the organization for our Business Support
Services to achieve a surplus, the primary
function of our supported employment is to
provide vocational training and employment to our
employees with a disability.
Overall our Business Support Services provided
supported employment for 152 people with a
disability.
Community Accommodation Services had a
good year with the completion of the two Olearia
Place group homes in Wagga Wagga with capital
funding of $369K from the NSW Government.
Within Community Support Services, both
Skills Options Day Services and Kurrajong Early
Childhood Intervention Service in delivering their
much needed programs, completed the year
above budget expectations.
Expenditure on wages, salaries and associated
payments of $10.5M makes a significant
contribution to the economies of the local
government areas receiving our services
especially through the employment of local staff.
Local economies also benefit as a consequence
of the organisation’s “buy locally” policy as capital
expenditure totalled $1.6M.
As always, fundraising, legacies and bequests
have contributed significantly to our financial
results with a net contribution of $419K.
The organisation also benefits from the
encouragement, support and assistance
generously provided by the community in a variety
of ways.
I must acknowledge the tremendous initiative,
effort and commitment made by the Managers of
the various sectors in achieving these results.
Finally, I extend special thanks to Mrs Sharyn
Atherton, Finance and Administration Manager.
Treasurer
DEPUTY CEO’S REPORT
Mr Ray Carroll
DEPUTY CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
The past year produced many highlights and
challenges across the organisation as we
delivered our quality services to over 800 people
with a disability across the Riverina Murray region
of NSW.
Our supported employment services had
another successful year providing sustained,
meaningful employment and vocational training to
approximately 156 people with disabilities in their
respective businesses.
The strong turnaround in profitability by our timber
processing business, Waratah Industries has been
especially pleasing. This turnaround is testament
to the hard and enthusiastic work by our
committed staff and employees. Contract work
with the large timber mills such as Hyne Timber
and Carter Holt Harvey has increased,
plus several new customers have been gained
during the last 12 months.
Structural and operational changes during the
year at our new Kurrajong Recyclers facility at
54 Chaston Street, Wagga Wagga, have greatly
improved efficiency. The plant is now operating
to its capabilities. The contract to receive
recyclable material from the Griffith and Leeton
Shires is working extremely well and we have
just secured the contract to receive recyclable
material from the Lockhart Shire. We anticipate
that in the future more local and district Shires will
consider moving to a kerbside recycling collection
system particularly when the proposed National
Waste Policy becomes legislated in 2011/12. The
Kurrajong Recyclers facility is more than capable
of handling additional volumes of recyclable
material which will come our way.
Our Kurrajong Small Business services in Wagga
Wagga, Leeton, Narrandera and West Wyalong
continued to provide a valuable employment
option for 67 people with a disability. These
small businesses have limited opportunity for
large growth in terms of commercial income,
however, they provide meaningful employment
opportunities and social benefits for people with
disabilities adding to the ‘social capital’ of these
communities.
Our open employment service, Work Solutions
continues to go from strength to strength securing
work opportunities and training in jobs in the
community for approximately 180 people with a
disability. The continued growth of this service
will see this service having to relocate in the near
future to larger premises.
In August 2009, as part of our employment
services contract with the Commonwealth
Government, a quality assurance triennial
recertification audit was conducted by external
independent auditors. The audit revealed
continued conformity to the Commonwealth
Disability Standards with many of our policies
and processes regarded as best practice by the
auditors.
Our accommodation services incorporating adult
accommodation in Wagga Wagga, West Wyalong
and Leeton, children’s accommodation and respite
as well as our community living drop in support
service, all maintained their high level of quality
and flexible service provision to our clients.
In October 2009, Kurrajong Waratah was
successful in being appointed to the Ageing,
Disability and Home Care’s (ADHC) Pre-Qualified
List for Accommodation Support Services.
The appointment to this list means that future
tendering for supported accommodation services
by the NSW Government for individuals and/
or groups of people with a disability will be
simplified, streamlined and better coordinated.
This appointment will provide opportunity for
Kurrajong Waratah to grow our supported
accommodation services through new funding
opportunities.
During the year, in response to a tender released
by Home Care Service of NSW, Kurrajong
Waratah was one of a number of service providers
selected to provide (on a subcontract basis) ‘in
home respite care’. The tender was released by
Home Care to deal with the expected increase in
demand for its in home services as a result of the
ageing population of NSW.
Our Skills Options day services in Wagga Wagga,
Leeton and West Wyalong have continued to
respond to the increasing needs of many of our
clients who are ageing and require a different
type of service. These services will continue
to grow in the future and we are well placed to
accommodate this growth which has and will
require an increase in staffing and other resources.
In our early childhood area, our Kurrajong Early
Childhood Intervention Service (KEIS) again
experienced substantial growth with over 200
children now receiving crucial early childhood
intervention services. This growth has resulted in
increased staffing levels and the need in the near
future to look at providing expanded physical
space for the staff to work in.
InterLink which coordinates Kurrajong Waratah’s
Support Coordination Program for Older Parent
Carers across the entire Riverina and Murray
Regions received advice of ongoing recurrent
funding from the NSW government. This was
great news. Over 200 older parent/carers in
the Riverina and Murray regions have received
support and assistance from InterLink to
improve their quality of life. Of particular note
is the significant number of ‘hidden carers’ and
aboriginal people and families that have been
able to be assisted.
During the reporting period, Kurrajong Waratah
was chosen to run a new staff training project
called People for People (P4P). This two year
pilot in the Western Region by NSW ADHC is
part of the “roll out” of their current Behaviour
Management Strategy. P4P involves building the
capacity (skills, knowledge and competencies)
of staff working in non government organisations
in the Riverina, Murray, Orana and Far Western
Regions of NSW. Over 90 presentations to non
government organisations in Positive Behaviour
Support, Restricted Practices Awareness and
Achieving Quality Outcomes have been delivered
with great success. We thank NSW ADHC for their
confidence in Kurrajong Waratah to successfully
deliver quality training on their behalf.
Our Development Services section again did
an excellent job in maintaining the strong
community support for the organisation during
a period of major economic uncertainty within
the business sector. The annual Art Union and
Race Day again produced outstanding results
which would not have been achieved without this
strong community support and belief in Kurrajong
Waratah’s ability to make a huge difference to
people’s lives.
Our small but hard working administration section
had a very busy year supporting all service
areas from a financial management perspective,
ensuring that internal controls and processes
are maintained. The team is constantly looking
to upgrade our processes, our information
technology and communication systems to
ensure that all sections receive timely and reliable
financial information on which to base their sound
service or business decisions.
Finally, I would like to thank our CEO, Steve
Jaques for his advice and support during the year.
Thank you also to our skilled Managers, staff and
employees who all apply themselves diligently in a
very rewarding environment.
DEVELOPMENT SERVICES REPORT
Mrs Cathie Smith
DEVELOPMENT SERVICES MANAGER
Kurrajong Waratah continues to work in a close
co-operative partnership with the local community
to support our work.
We are proud that this strong partnership provides
not only direct benefits for people with a disability
and their families, but Kurrajong Waratah’s
involvement also provides economic and other
benefits for the community.
These benefits include among other things, our
role as a major employer in the community and
through the purchase of goods and services from
local businesses through our ‘buy local’ actions.
At the present time Kurrajong Waratah provides
full time, part time and casual employment to
some 242 local and district people.
We value our relationship with all our business and
community supporters enormously. Without them
there naturally would be things that Kurrajong
Waratah would be unable to achieve for people
with a disability and their families. I am incredibly
proud of the fact that our local community
recognises that Kurrajong Waratah receives only
half of the funding required to provide our current
services and importantly, responds to it with offers
of support and help.
Today 800 babies, children and adults with a
disability and their families use the services
Kurrajong Waratah provides. This number
continues to grow and their needs will become
more complex and will change as they age.
This will place additional demands on Kurrajong
Waratah’s resources and services.
It is particularly important therefore that we
continue to maintain a solid support and
fundraising program that relies not only on
specific fundraising events, even though they are
a vital part of it, but on the ongoing generosity
of businesses, clubs and the people in the
community.
The potential from one area of community support
was highlighted during the year when a bequest
from our friend the late Kate Banting from Temora
was received. While a gift of this type is the
final one a person makes, it is one that has the
capabilities to create benefits that live beyond the
benefactor.
In Kate Banting’s case, we had the benefit of
knowing just what her wishes for Kurrajong
Waratah were and importantly we had the
opportunity to thank her personally, which is not
always the case.
Due to the increasing number of enquiries, we will
be developing a brochure on this particular way of
supporting Kurrajong Waratah in the near future,
to assist with the enquiries we receive through our
publications as well as when people are making
or revising their wills. Advice in the meantime is
only ever a phone call away and I encourage and
welcome contact from our supporters.
Our fundraising campaign to be able to construct
a third group home at our Olearia Place
development continued to be at the forefront
throughout the year.
We are confident that with continued support we
should be in a position to commence construction
of this much needed house for adults with a
disability in 2011.
Our partnership with
so many areas of the
community is more
necessary now than ever
before.
The Kurrajong Waratah Race Day was again a
resounding success. The sponsors who have
been part of this event, in some cases for over 20
years, are to be applauded as are the wonderful
Race Day committee who work hard to ensure
they maintain the momentum and financial
success of this event. I thoroughly recommend
for your perusal the list of individuals, groups and
corporations who are recognised in the thank
you and acknowledgement pages of this annual
report.
Our Art Union, while now in its 32nd year,
continued to provide a major source of fundraising
income for the organisation throughout the year.
The support of our loyal media, many of whom
are Corporate Life Members of Kurrajong Waratah
and Allen Thomas of Thomas Bros and Myer who
are also both Life Members, are amazing in the
support they provide.
The other major event Kurrajong Waratah is
involved in is the Christmas Spectacular. Again
there are a number of groups, corporations and
individuals whose support is vital to the success
of this event and who are recognised in the
acknowledgement section of this annual report.
It would be remiss of me to record this year
without paying particular attention to the members
of Wagga Business NetworX, Myer staff and a
number of service groups who give their time
in a voluntary capacity to run successful events
which result in significant donations for Kurrajong
Waratah’s services for people with a disability.
Kurrajong Waratah recognise that each of the
donations they have made throughout the year
was the result of the hard work of the members of
these respective groups.
Athol Bryon and Bill Harris, two members of ‘Dad’s Army’ are
regularly found at Hildasid enjoying the rural environment
and being a great asset to Kurrajong Waratah. New recruits
are urgently needed, so if you are retired or just enjoy the
outdoors, perhaps you could volunteer your services for even
a couple of hours a week. Contact Cathie Smith on 0438 219
487 for information.
To those who have continued to support our work
during the year we thank you most sincerely.
We cannot do the job ahead alone and our
partnership with so many areas of the community
is more necessary now than ever before.
To the Managers and staff of Kurrajong Waratah
who volunteer their time to ensure our events are
successful, my staff who give over and above to
ensure success and our Executive who support
what we do, I offer my sincere thanks.
Finally, to each and every person who is named
as a donor, supporter or volunteer in the
acknowledgement pages of this report I thank
you most sincerely for helping Kurrajong Waratah
make a real and lasting difference to people’s
lives.
Please know with absolute confidence that
without your support today and into the
future, someone with a disability would miss
an opportunity which could benefit them for a
lifetime.
WORK SOLUTIONS & RMADO
Mr Crispin Lowe
WORK SOLUTIONS & RMADO MANAGER
It has been a very successful year for Work
Solutions. We have once again attained the
highest performance five star rating from
government for our disability employment
contracts which provide support to jobseekers
with a disability to gain and maintain employment
within their local community.
Over the last three years, Work Solutions has
achieved a rating within the top 10% nationally,
which is a tremendous achievement for a regional
service provider. For our current contract just
finished, we achieved a rating in the top 4%
nationally.
I have previously reported on the changes to
disability employment programs, funded by the
Commonwealth Department of Employment,
Education and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
In March this year, new government contract
changes formed the Disability Employment
Services (DES) program.
The main changes to the programs are:
• The removal of the cap (limit) on the number of
clients we can service.
• The introduction of annual Ongoing Support
Assessments conducted by independent
assessors, which determine if people in jobs for
more than 12 months require ongoing support
to maintain their employment.
Despite the increased contractual obligations of
the new program, we will see an influx of new
clients across the Riverina Murray region to Work
Solutions now that the limit has been lifted.
I would like to thank my staff for their hard work
during the initial stages of the transition process in
readiness for the DES Program.
The changes also required a restructure and the
creation of a position of Employment Programs
Coordinator to ensure that the transition process
continues to run smoothly and our growing
team which included two additional full time
staff working from our Leeton office, continued
to achieve quality outcomes for our clients
across the different employment and post school
programs we provide.
As part of Work Solutions’ role in ensuring
Kurrajong Waratah continues to meet all of its
contractual obligations, a Quality Assurance
Coordinator has also been appointed to work
within the Work Solutions team. This position also
assists the Vocational Training Officers (VTO’s)
employed in Kurrajong Waratah’s supported
employment services and Work Solutions
Employment Consultants to ensure that we
continue to attain Quality Assurance certification
and provide training and support which is in line
with the key performance indicators under the
Commonwealth Disability Employment standards.
This position supports the organisation by
coordinating the development and updating of
policy and procedures required by Kurrajong
Waratah’s services.
Once again our transition to work programs, have
had a busy time with a large number of school
leavers embarking on the journey from school
to work in Leeton, Deniliquin, Narrandera and
Wagga Wagga. Each school leaver is supported
Each school leaver is
supported to develop an
individualised program
that assists their career
and skill development.
to develop an individualised program that assists
their career and skill development and provides
the opportunity to try different workplaces.
There were 11 people who chose to attend Work
Solutions Certificate I in Employability Skills, a 13
week course covering just what it takes to hold
down a job, as well as attending first aid and
introduction to occupational health and safety.
Our transition to work program has successfully
seen a number of people already finding fulltime
employment, both within Kurrajong Waratah’s
supported employment services as well as in the
local business community.
I would like to thank all of the team at Work
Solutions for their hard work during an extremely
busy year and I welcome our new staff and look
forward to another big year.
WARATAH INDUSTRIES
Mr Jim Seymour
WARATAH INDUSTRIES MANAGER
This year has certainly been a time of change
for Waratah Industries in streamlining our
product range and a large focus on ensuring our
machinery is fully utilised. Both these business
strategies has resulted in a growth in sales
volumes and in products that both suit our factory
and our employees’ skills. Based on this strategy
into 2011, we are confident that we will continue
to improve the customers and volumes at Waratah
Industries.
The support we have had from various
companies, Hyne Timber Tumbarumba, Carter
Holt Harvey Tumut, Waterhouse Melbourne,
Newtech Tube Co Sydney, Austrak, Ausply
and Leighton Constructions are just a few of
the businesses who have contributed to our
successful year.
The flexibility of our business and our ability to
produce products which larger producers do not
find attractive has allowed us to fit into a niche
market supplying short run, high value quality
products or specialist profiles which suits our
customers’ needs, as well as producing for our
longer term contracts.
Passing the stringent criteria to obtain the
Australian wood packaging certification, which
The employees have
continued to step up and
show what great skills
and work ethic they
have to make Waratah
Industries a true timber
processing business to be
proud of.
allows Waratah Industries to certify that timber
products we produce comply with Australian
standards has opened up further opportunities to
expand our business to companies that export
their timber product.
Throughout the year we have aimed to always
produce quality products on time and to
customer’s requirements in full, which has ensured
our customer base has confidence in the Waratah
Industries operations and will continue to place
orders.
The employees have continued to step up and
show what great skills and work ethic they have to
make Waratah Industries a true timber processing
business to be proud of.
The focus for the future to continue to lift sales
volumes, will be a greater emphasis on working
smarter and safer, rather than working harder.
This will be achieved through a higher degree of
computer controlled machinery and increased
vocational and training opportunities which our
staff and employees have embraced.
Safety remains a core value of Waratah Industries
and work processes and equipment continue
to be changed to improve our safety level.
The support of the Board with new equipment
purchases this year has improved the safe
working conditions on site as well as reducing
the level of manual handling on our employees.
Other areas of safety improvement include house
keeping and changing from metal strapping to
plastic strapping on pallets of products, improved
machine isolation and an overall lifting safety
awareness and standards.
Work conditions on site have improved
dramatically with the yard being concreted and
the arrival of a new truck.
With the recent arrival of the new semi optimising
docker saws our length quality has improved and
combined with a higher throughput the machines
are capable of, it has ensured the capacity to take
on more work.
We are looking forward to the coming year. With
the confidence returning to the Australian timber
market our business can only continue to grow.
I would like to thank my staff and employees for
their continued support and the dedication they
have in making Waratah Industries a success this
year.
Thank you also to our CEO Steve Jaques, Deputy
CEO Ray Carroll and the Board of Kurrajong
Waratah for their continued support and
contributions to Waratah Industries.
KURRAJONG BUSINESS SERVICES
Mr Alan Larcombe
KURRAJONG BUSINESS SERVICES MANAGER
Over the past five years Kurrajong Business
Services (KBS) has grown from employing 68
adults with a disability supported by 28 staff to
125 employees with a disability supported by 55
staff.
This expansion of KBS has also been brought
about by the inclusion of Kurrajong Recyclers
located at our new site at 54 Chaston Street,
Wagga Wagga in September, 2009.
Kurrajong Business Services now consists of
eight businesses located in Wagga Wagga, West
Wyalong, Narrandera and Leeton with a variety
of commercial operations from three recycling
businesses, a commercial laundry, food and
catering, a café/coffee shop, an ironing service,
internal property maintenance/fleet management
and a school bus contract. Such a wide and
varied mix provides great choices for adults with
a disability seeking supported employment with
Kurrajong Waratah.
Kurrajong Recyclers underwent a significant
review and restructure of its operations during
the year bringing about increased business
efficiencies in the day to day operations, financial
benefits and greater productivity and commitment
from staff and employees.
This review and restructure has overcome the
difficulties and delays in starting up the new
Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) reported last
year. I am very pleased to report that having
positively overcome these issues the new MRF
is processing residential recycling materials not
only from Wagga Wagga but from Leeton, Griffith,
Deniliquin and Lockhart local government areas.
Commercial and industrial materials received and
processed is also on the increase.
The overall monthly tonnages of material leaving
the site for sale exceeds 1,300 tonnes and the
commodity prices are slowly improving with only
occasional fluctuations. The demand and variety
of material required by our customers is steady
and is a very encouraging pattern for the future.
In the latter part of this year, we received advice
from the Commonwealth Government that our
application for a grant to build a large E-recycling
facility was successful and will allow us to expand
our existing operations in recycling materials
originating from electronic equipment such as
computers and televisions.
This grant is part of the Commonwealth
Governments’ “Jobs Fund – Get Communities
Working” national program and is specifically
intended to create local employment opportunities
for adults with a disability. The operation will be
known as Kurrajong Recyclers E-recycling and it
is planned to be in full swing by the end of 2011.
The facility will be located on our main site at 54
Chaston Street adjacent to the new MRF building.
During the year, the business services located
at Narrandera, Leeton and West Wyalong
underwent a restructure and are now known as
Outreach Business Services. This encompasses
the services identified as Cypress Centre and
Spins and are now operated under the direct
accountability of one Outreach Co-ordinator. To
date it is apparent that this process has been very
successful and has resulted in further efficiencies
and financial benefits without any disruption or
disadvantages to the staff and employees working
in the businesses.
As mentioned previously KBS operates three
recycling services and two of these are located
at Narrandera and West Wyalong. These two
services stand alone and do not rely on our larger
service in Wagga Wagga but support is always
available whenever required.
Their primary activities consist of the collection
and processing of cardboard and paper from
commercial and industrial premises and also 24
hour drop off facilities for local residents, as their
respective local government areas have yet to
introduce a kerb side residential collection service.
The baled materials are freighted to Tumut and
Sydney and the combined result is approximately
45 tonnes per month. Combined, these recycling
services employ 14 adults with a disability and
four staff.
The new MRF is
processing residential
recycling materials not
only from Wagga Wagga
but from Leeton, Griffith,
Deniliquin and Lockhart
local government areas.
The Narrandera Laundry and Linen Service which
operates in Narrandera and Leeton has completed
another very successful year with increases in
turnover, laundering an average of 10 tonnes of
linen per month. The Leeton Ironing Basket has
consistently maintained the valued service to the
many customers and plays a role in supporting the
presence of the other services provided in Leeton
by Kurrajong Waratah for the needs of adults with
a disability from Leeton and Narrandera Shires.
Café Peckish located in the grounds of the very
pleasant main park in West Wyalong continues to
provide a high quality food and dining experience
for the local community and the travelling tourists
that use the Newell Highway from Victoria and
Queensland. The success of this business seems
to stem from the continued innovation in changing
the menu to suit the seasons and also the
attraction for children with the olive tree maze, for
birthday parties.
Culinary Capers located in Wagga Wagga have
consolidated their position in the business
community in providing consistent quality
products for the many local food outlets. This
consistency is achieved by the commitment of all
and the ever demanding provisions of the NSW
Food Authority food licence that we are required
to hold and maintain with regular independent
audit inspections and monthly laboratory testing
of the bacteriological food quality of our product.
contractor. The crew make swift work of the job.
The business services
located at Narrandera,
Leeton and West Wyalong
underwent a restructure
and are now known
as Outreach Business
Services.
The Kurrajong Maintenance crew located in
Wagga Wagga continued to be responsible for the
maintenance of some 25 local properties owned
and/or occupied by various Kurrajong Waratah
services and also maintained fleet management of
about 60 motor vehicles that are required to meet
the needs of our services.
The Department of Education and Training have
again extended the school bus run contract
service to Kurrajong Waratah, which is very
efficiently operated by the staff and employees of
this maintenance service.
In conclusion, I would like to thank very much, all
of my staff and employees who have supported
the many changes and challenges that have been
presented in the businesses throughout the year.
Without this enthusiastic support and
commitment, the goals and future initiatives that
have been implemented could not have been
achieved.
PEOPLE FOR PEOPLE PROJECT
Reduce the client’s
need to display the
challenging behaviour
Mrs Janet Laws
P4P PROJECT MANAGER
During early 2009, the NSW Ageing, Disability
and Home Care Division (ADHC) Western Region
trialled a behaviour intervention training and
support initiative for its funded non government
(NGO) disability services. As a result of the
success of this initiative and the unmet demand
for staff training and support, Kurrajong Waratah
was funded to continue to deliver this staff training
to disability services across the Western Region
over two years.
Kurrajong Waratah has called the project “P4P”
which stands for People for People – Positive
Outcomes for staff and for people with disabilities
in non government services. A Project Manager
based in Wagga Wagga and a Project Officer
based in Bathurst were employed to deliver the
P4P initiative.
P4P has been very successful in its first year of
providing free staff training to NGO staff in:
• Positive Behaviour Support – providing staff
with an understanding of challenging behaviour,
what it is and what it means for the client and
how to provide better support for the client
to reduce the client’s need to display the
challenging behaviour.
• Restricted Practice Awareness – identifying
what are restricted practices, the environments
they might be required and the process required
to obtain consent and authorisation.
• Achieving Quality Outcomes – is an overview
of the process for identifying gaps in a client’s
life through what they are telling us through
their responses to their environment and setting
mutual goals which are relevant and important
to the client.
Another objective of the P4P project has been to
set up Mentor Support Network meetings across
the Western Region. This enables the project to
provide more training and support to individuals
from disability services who are expected to share
the information and knowledge they learn within
their own organisation through mentoring their
colleagues.
DAY OPTIONS
Mrs Carolyn Eckersall
DAY OPTIONS MANAGER
Day Options
Skills Options operates services in Wagga Wagga,
West Wyalong and Leeton to provide day support
to 64 adults with a disability who have medium to
high support needs. Skills Options is funded by
the NSW Department of Human Services, Ageing
and Disability and Home Care Division to provide
a range of meaningful activities which reflect
people’s needs and life stages.
Skills Options assisted clients to identify and
achieve their lifestyle goals through the Personal
Plan process. This process involves asking our
clients what they would like to do using pictures
or lists with examples of what types of activities
are on offer. We also check with parents/carers/
advocates as to what ideas they have. From this
we are able to set up a program of activities so
that the person knows what is planned for their
week with the flexibility for change if the person so
desires. The aim is for people to develop or keep
their skills in the activities he or she chooses.
The key to providing a quality service is having
a variety of activities on offer to clients as well
has having a well trained, versatile team of
staff. Having staff who come from a variety
of backgrounds brings many skills, personal
interests and talents to the service which enables
a more varied program to be developed and
offered to clients. Programs can include cooking,
swimming, woodwork, shopping, art, attending
TAFE/the Community College, participating in the
community or developing performance skills for
example.
In 2009, performing artists with disabilities
linked up with the Wagga Wagga School of Arts
Community Theatre (SOACT) artists to present
a play called ‘The Black Sorcerer’. This was a
charming fairytale written by a client from The
Leisure Company.
The performances were part of a project called
LinkAble, which was a collaborative endeavour by
the School of Arts Community Theatre (SOACT),
Kurrajong Waratah and Kooringal High School.
LinkAble was funded by Regional Arts NSW.
The key to providing
a quality service is
having a variety of
activities on offer to
clients as well has
having a well trained,
versatile team of staff.
Also in 2009 we held our annual Art Exhibition
which was a collaborative exhibition of artworks
from Skills Options Day Service Kurrajong
Waratah, The Leisure Company, Willans Hill
School, the Riverina Community College and
Wagga Wagga High School.
The exhibition presented to the public the abilities
and achievements of people with a disability.
Our art exhibition was held in conjunction with
“International Day of People with a Disability”
which is celebrated worldwide.
Those attending the opening night of our
exhibition were treated to The Twilight Dance
Troupe performing ‘Diurnal’, a Butoh dance.
The development of this dance piece was made
possible by the Phil and Joan Millard Trust Fund
established within Kurrajong Waratah by the
Millard family.
Skills Options in Wagga Wagga has benefitted
from having a variety of locations to work from
and this helps ensure people are spending their
day on projects and activities they like and with
people whose company they like. However, it
is important to note that not everyone is able to
cope with or wants a setting where there is group
support. Sometimes people require a service
where activities are accessed from their home or
they need a quieter setting as their base and we
endeavour to meet this need where we can.
Overall the clients and staff of Skills Options
Leeton, West Wyalong and Wagga Wagga have
had a very busy 12 months where much has been
achieved.
Thanks to all the staff, volunteers, clients, and
families and carers for all your support with
making things happen.
EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTION SERVICE
Mrs Susan Macgillycuddy
EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTION
SERVICE MANAGER
In 2009, Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention
Service (KEIS) delivered high quality early
childhood intervention services to 207 families and
their children with a disability or developmental
delay in two or more areas.
KEIS has an excellent dedicated team that is very
committed to the children and families and are
widely acknowledged for the tremendous work
they do. Together with families, the KEIS team are
making huge differences in children’s lives.
KEIS once again successfully provided a ‘one
stop shop’ early childhood intervention service to
ten local government areas. We employed a total
of 23 specialised early childhood transdisciplinary
team members to deliver our services. Every child
and family were provided with a ‘team around
the child’ which consisted of an early childhood
educator, speech pathologist, occupational
therapist, physiotherapist, family support worker
and were supported by administration staff and
the Manager.
A major initiative in the year was the partnership
we formed with the Riverina Medical and Dental
Corporation through the SEARCH project to
provide Speech Assessments for Indigenous
children aged from 0 – 7 years. The SEARCH
project is a longitudinal study of the health of
indigenous children 0 – 18 years. Our involvement
is greatly assisting with early identification of
developmental delays for Aboriginal children
under seven.
The federally funded Rural Beginnings Program
continued to assist families living in rural and
remote areas to access equitable early childhood
intervention services in or close to their local
community. Through the commitment and skills
of the specialised paediatric KEIS team we have
been able to provide responsive early childhood
intervention services to the diverse needs of
children, families and the local community.
In 2009 there was an array of disabilities and
individual needs presented at KEIS by children
seeking our assistance. The areas and types
included: Cerebral Palsy – 2%, Developmental
Delays – 38%, Global Developmental Delays
– 15%, Premature – 8%, Autism – 15%, Down
Syndrome - 4%, Spina Bifida – 2%, Foetal
Alcohol Syndrome – 1%, Other syndromes – 15%.
KEIS services follow a family centred philosophy
where we take a holistic approach to our services
for both the child and their family. The family
support team are extremely dedicated and
committed to the families. The team provides
positive parenting programs (Triple P groups) for
KEIS families. Many families testified that the
program made a huge difference in their parenting
Great work John! Educator Maree Kok is full of
praise for having finished his puzzle during John’s
one-on-one session with her.
and this has had a positive effect on their child’s
development and on their own confidence to be
their child’s primary intervention worker.
The family support worker team also assisted
with organising community events to promote the
awareness and inclusion of people with disabilities
and their families in the community. Successful
events held were the Buddy Walk around Lake
Albert during Down Syndrome week and Kites for
Kids at Ashmont Oval during Early Intervention
Awareness week.
An integral part of KEIS is to assist families
to establish a social and support network
where they can share their joys, triumphs and
disappointments with each other. Families shared
time together when attending early learning
groups and the family support worker team
also organised coffee mornings and girl night’s
out. The friendships parents form at KEIS are
continued after leaving our service and they
become lifelong supports.
The KEIS team would like to thank all the families
and children for working closely with us. The KEIS
team is a partnership and one that is based on
trust. We have been greatly honoured to be part of
the families and children’s lives.
ACCOMMODATION SERVICES
Mr Cannon Banks
ACCOMMODATION SERVICES MANAGER
(Team B & C)
Accommodation Teams B & C
This year has certainly been busy for Adult
Accommodation as a whole and for Team B and
Team C it wasn’t hard to be caught up in the
turbulence of significant change.
In November 2009, NSW ADHC funded Kurrajong
Waratah to run a two year staff development
project called People for People (P4P). This
project provided opportunities for Management
and Team Leader changes for Teams B & C.
These changes were part of an overall
reconfiguration of Adult Accommodation due to
two new houses being built. The opportunity to
restructure adult accommodation teams through
a very comprehensive and extensive process
involved clients, families and staff.
Team B has established itself and is really taking
a strong hold on how it runs as a whole, with
routines being changed and varied to suit clients’
needs. Team B is running smoothly and the
clients are really getting the best service from this
reconfiguration change.
As an example, six clients had the opportunity to
be able to go on a holiday to Batemans Bay. They
enjoyed a five day short break on the coast which
included a range of activities such as taking part
in leisurely strolls along the beach, visits to Mogo
Zoo and other local attractions. I would like to
thank all staff who assisted in the implementation
of this worthwhile event. It is only financially
possible to offer such opportunities with staff
support to flexibly reshuffle staffing resources in
our other houses.
Team C has also had an eventful year, obviously
with the changes which occurred in October being
the main focus. Staff training in regards to clients’
health needs has been a major area of central
interest. Team C houses a number of clients with
particularly high support requirements, which as
a result have meant updating all comprehensive
health assessment programs so as to maintain
and provide the highest possible care.
With a particular client entering Team C, we
explored a range of options in alternative living
and commuting opportunities. The successful
implementation of this goal has given the client a
healthier lifestyle and encourages a more active
participation in everyday movements to work.
Staff are to be thanked for their ongoing help and
enthusiasm of this goal.
We have had the opportunity, in line with P4P
project to put into service a Lifestyle Environment
Review for a particular client. This enabled the
staff of the client to focus on decisions from an
‘important for’ and ‘important to’ perspective.
The program allowed staff to view their workplace
with fresh eyes, establishing new goals and
reassessing what is important to the client. There
has been a wonderful positive response from staff
in support of the program and the benefits of it
for their work. More importantly, the client has
reestablished contact with family members due to
the program and has regular reaffirmation of their
value.
It has been a sincere pleasure to partake in such
a successful year for this valuable organisation.
I would particularly like to acknowledge and
recognise the contributions made by staff and the
support and encouragement of management. My
thanks are especially extended to my committed
and hard working Team Leaders and staff of
Teams B and C.
ACCOMMODATION SERVICES
Mrs Lyndal Ross
ACCOMMODATION SERVICES MANAGER
(CGH, CLSS & Allambie)
Allambie Accommodation Support Service
The Leeton Allambie clients have all experienced
many achievements this year. They have been
supported to access the community, go on
exciting holidays, maintain friendships, learn new
skills and make healthy lifestyle choices.
Weekly household meetings involve all clients
and are a forum for discussion about household
activities and responsibilities but they also play an
important role in continuing education. Over the
past year, each week clients have worked through
a package developed by the Team Leader which
teaches everything from fire safety and healthy
eating to water awareness.
The level of support required by each client to
manage their health needs continues to increase
each year as we are supporting clients with
complex needs. The staff are an integral element
in ensuring continuity in care and providing
that much needed guidance and assistance in
accessing generic medical services.
I would like to thank the enthusiastic and
committed staff who have ensured that quality
care is being provided to our clients each and
every day.
Children’s Accommodation Support Service
Our group homes continue to provide Monday
to Friday care to a diverse group of adolescents.
This care enables them to attend their chosen
school in Wagga Wagga and participate in the
many opportunities that living in a regional city
presents. Staff work in collaboration with schools
and families to design routines and plans around
care which focus on individual gifts and abilities.
This out of home care benefits both the child/adult
and their family and the increasing need for quality
care is evident each week. Respite or short breaks
is provided on weekends and school holidays to
children and adults and over 250 placements have
been utilised by families from Wagga Wagga and
the surrounding areas over the past year.
Through the continuing and generous support of
Wagga Business NetworX, children were able
to enjoy a summer holiday in Aspen Springs,
Victoria. The children were excited about staying
on a resort farm and were able to participate
in feeding the animals each day. Many tourist
attractions were visited which gave the children
the opportunity to experience new and exciting
things.
My thanks go to the team of dedicated and
creative staff who support our clients and their
families and thanks must also go to these families
who welcome us into their lives.
Community Living Support Service
This service assists 15 clients to live
independently in their own houses or flats in
the Wagga Wagga community. Our main focus
of support is on lifestyle support that includes
managing medical needs, everyday household
living, networking and socialising with family and
friends and financial management. As our client’s
support needs increase we endeavour to adapt
the care we provide and use creative strategies to
achieve this.
Staff continue to support clients on weekends to
access social activities/events and participate in
the life of the Wagga Wagga community.
This has now been extended to include a mid
week group which provides that much needed
social stimulation to clients who have retired from
employment or reduced their work hours due to
the challenges of ageing.
We have continued to work closely with client’s
workplaces/day programs and families to ensure
Individual Lifestyle Plans (ILP’s) are achievable and
reflect their skills and abilities. Individual goals and
outcomes have been varied but there has been a
common theme of developing opportunities and
skills in social networking, budgeting and healthy
lifestyle choices.
Our clients face challenges and barriers each day
and show us great determination and strength in
their pursuit for independence. My thanks go to
the committed staff who support and encourage
our clients to live an enhanced lifestyle and who
assisted with the many achievements individuals
have made over the past year.
ACCOMMODATION SERVICES
Mrs Noelene Hogan
ACCOMMODATION SERVICES MANAGER
(Team A & Marashel)
Team A
It has been a year of stabilisation and growth for
clients, families and staff. Lots of changes and
challenges, however very exciting for all.
The two new houses at Olearia Place in Wagga
Wagga have been completed and were ready for
occupancy by the end of 2009.
It was good for clients to be able to move into
permanent houses which are owned by Kurrajong
Waratah rather than rental houses on the open
market with all the vagaries and uncertainty that
presents.
In order for the move to run as smoothly as
possible for the clients and all concerned, an
in-depth process of consultation was put in place
with community members involved in supporting
the clients to talk about who they might like to live
with and new things they might like to be doing.
Families were also a very important part of this
change process. I thank the families for their
valuable input. In group homes we look at each
person individually and our service delivery is
person centred based as much as possible on
taking into account each client’s needs.
Anembo Place is also proving to be a very suitable
housing option for the clients who live there.
House meetings continue to provide good
opportunities for the clients to have input into the
day to day running of their lives and make plans
just like other people about the events coming
up in their lives e.g. birthdays, outings, dances,
concerts, holidays and family news, friends and
social activities and trips away to see other clients
in the area.
Clients’ changing needs both physical and
medical and the process of ageing still remain a
priority when we are reviewing and monitoring
our service. Processes and strategies are in place
to do this and we continue to build and develop
relationships with aged care service providers to
assist our knowledge and our client’s needs.
Staff training has also been an area we have
concentrated on this year providing staff with
many and varied opportunities to gain more skills
and knowledge within the disability field.
Marashel West Wyalong
The five clients at Marashel have all had an
eventful year. Attending Opera in the Park with
champagne, cheese and biscuits, attending
dances, catching up with special friends, family
events and special birthdays.
Families continue to play a large role in the client’s
lives and our thanks are extended to them for their
involvement.
Our Skills Options West Wyalong service played
a major part of their weekly activities. Many
clients are enjoying cooking the evening meal and
socialising at the local club.
West Wyalong Medical Services continue to
provide good support to our clients in all areas.
This is a pleasing relationship to have as our
clients continue to have changing needs in many
areas of their everyday lives.
Some clients enjoy gardening and this year we
have had a major makeover in the grounds and
this has cleared the space for a flower garden.
In closing for the year, I would especially like
to thank all my Team Leaders, staff and other
Managers very much for their on-going support.
Thank you also to the CEO and the DCEO for their
advice and assistance.
OUR PARTNERS IN SUCCESS
In addition to the many individuals, groups and corporations who are listed in the financial support
section of this Annual Report, there are many others who give generously of their time and in kind.
In doing so they also contribute significantly to Kurrajong Waratah’s success.
We extend a very special thank you to:
• The Riverina Institute of TAFE Wagga Wagga
who have assisted us in so many practical ways
through their various trades and courses.
• Our wonderful local and regional media who have
supported our work by enabling us to reach the
wider community throughout the year. In particular
we thank our Corporate Life Members Prime
Television, Riverina Media Group/Daily Advertiser
and 2WG/93.1 StarFM.
• Since our first Kurrajong Waratah Race Day in
1989, the Murrumbidgee Turf Club has allocated
an annual day and done so much to ensure the
day’s success. We thank in particular Chairman
Stuart Lamont and his fellow Directors, CEO,
Christine Williams and her staff for their continued
support.
• The Kurrajong Waratah Race Days are driven
by a small but dynamic committee who work
with our Development Services staff to produce
outstanding results. They are Rob Balding,
Chairman, Penny Lamont, Susan Duffy, Karen
Littlejohn, Gwen Fellows, Steven Watson, Andrew
Bradley, Adam Drummond and Nigel McKellar who
of their time to support our staff in our day
programs which enable people with a disability to
be actively involved in community activities.
by the Nash family. In particular we thank Bill
Harris and Athol Bryon and their patient wives and
prove it and had the pleasure of the first drink
of clear water.
100
101. An unprecedented 20mm of rain in five
hours in March left Hildasid awash and trees
uprooted and relocated onto the property
drilling began. Wagga Directional Drilling were
art Bournedrill air drilling rig and in the hands
had recommended.
102. Significant damage was also caused to
roads and creek crossings on the property
leaving some unusable with holes and a
substantial cost to the organisation. These
holes are deceivingly deep being filled with
stagnant water a metre deep in places.
