Head Coach Brian Mondschein
Brian Mondschein enters his 14th year as head coach of the men’s
and women’s track & field program at Kutztown University.
Mondschein has built the Kutztown track & field program into
one of the elite in NCAA Division II. His teams have won 16 conference
championships, while he has trained 77 Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference (PSAC) and numerous Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) champions, 37 All-Americans, three Academic All-Americans,
15 All-Academic selections by the NCAA Divsion II Track and Field
Coaches Association, two PSAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year, two PSAC
Rookies of the Year and a national champion.
Mondschein’s men’s teams have won five PSAC Outdoor Championships
(1996, 1998, 2000-2002) and took five-straight ECAC Indoor
titles (1997-2001).
The Golden Bear women’s team has won three PSAC Outdoor
titles (1997, 2000, 2005) and two PSAC Indoor crowns (2004, 2005). Additionally, the team won
the 2001 ECAC Indoor Championship.
Mondschein has been named the PSAC Coach of the Year 10 times, after each of his team’s
PSAC titles. Most recently, he was named PSAC Indoor and Outdoor Women’s Coach of the Year
after his teams swept the 2005 conference titles.
Mondschein’s first title was the school’s first title of any kind since 1988. In March of 1995,
his men’s squad won the ECAC indoor championships. Kutztown’s first PSAC championship
since 1983 came the next year when the men won the outdoor title. In 1997, the men began their
unprecedented run of five-straight ECAC titles, while the women won their first-ever PSAC
crown. Tara Crozier went on to become KU’s first women’s track and field national champion,
winning the hammer. The next year, Mondschein’s men won the ECAC and PSAC championships,
completing Kutztown’s first-ever sweep of the events in the same year.
Mondschein came to Kutztown from the University of Virginia, where he was an assistant
beginning in 1987. Prior to Virginia, he spent four years as an assistant coach at Rice and was
previously track coach at Orange Coast College. He competed nationally and internationally in
track & field from 1973-83. In 1977, Mondschein was an All-America decathlete for the University
of Washington. He was an Academic All-American. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English
and broadcast journalism from Washington in 1977.
Assistant Coach Ray Hoffman
Ray Hoffman enters his eighth season as assistant track and field
coach and head cross country coach at Kutztown.
In cross country, Hoffman was named the 2000 PSAC Women’s
Coach of the Year. He was also named KU’s Dr. Dorothy Moyer/Nike
Women’s Athletics Coach of the Year in 2000-01 and 2001-02.
On the track, Hoffman’s distance runners have set records in 14
events during the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons. He has
coached 16 PSAC Champions, 57 All-PSAC performers and six ECAC
Champions. Hoffman guided nine athletes to ECAC titles.
Hoffman was named the 2004-05 PSAC Indoor Co-Coach of the Year
after helping the women’s team to the conference championship.
On the national level, Hoffman has had 22 NCAA provisional qualifiers,
highlighted by Eunice Chege’s 11th-place finish in the 3,000-meter run at the 1999 NCAA
Championships.
Hoffman previously coached at Clemson, where he had two junior national qualifiers, while his
4x800 and 4x1500 relays set school records.
Prior to Clemson, Hoffman was assistant women’s cross country and track & field coach at East
Stroudsburg. He was named 1995 ECAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. During his
tenure, he coached a four-time All-American and an eight-time national qualifier. Hoffman’s runners
captured 18 ECAC and three PSAC titles in track & field. He also coached the top NCAA
Division II American miler in 1997.
A 1994 graduate of East Stroudsburg, Hoffman served as captain of the Warriors’ cross country
Season Outlook
Men’s Track & Field Hopes to Build on Past Success
The Kutztown University men’s track &
field team will enter the 2005-06 season looking
to build upon its past successes.
The team, which has won six Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) titles, placed
second at last year’s PSAC Outdoor Championship,
its first top-two finish since winning the
2002 title. The Golden Bears also placed fourth
at the indoor championship.
The Golden Bears return a host of PSAC
Champions and All-PSAC performers in hopes
of challenging for top-three spots at the conference
championship meets again in 2006.
Leading the way will be returning individual
conference champions Steve Tyson, Mike
Provenzano, Tony Hegedus and Dan Wilson.
Tyson was a double champion last year,
winning both the indoor and outdoor shot put
with a season-best throw of 52-8. Tyson’s
performance earned him the KU Male Rookie of
the Year award.
PSAC outdoor championships, with a seasonbest
vault of 15-8.
KU Women Look to Defend PSAC Titles in 2006
Kutztown University’s women’s track &
to defend its unprecedented Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) indoor and
outdoor championships.
KU won its second-straight indoor championship,
while the team won its first outdoor
title since 2000.
In order to remain at the top, KU will
have to replace nine athletes who scored points
at the championship meets last year. KU does,
however, have several PSAC Champions and
All-PSAC performers back in the fold.
Leading the way are returning champions
Alison Maurer, Laura Kline and Renee
Marchand.
Maurer won the 20-lb. weight throw at
the indoor title with a meet record throw of 55-
in the event. Outdoors, Maurer
earned All-America honors in the hammer, placing
seventh at the NCAA Championships.
Kline and Marchand were double winners
at the outdoor conference meet. Kline won the
400-meter hurdles, while Marchand won the
Hegedus was second in the 400-meter dash
at the indoor championship. He ran a leg of the
title-winning 4x400 relay. Hegedus also earned
and 4x400 relay.
Wilson rounds out the returning champions.
He won the javelin in 2005 with an NCAA
provisional qualifying distance of 209-1.
In addition to Hegedus, Billy Boorse and
Steve Hixson also return from the PSAC Champion
indoor 4x400 relay. Hixson was a member
of the 4x400 relay outdoors which earned allconference
honors as well. Matt Carroll will
look to return to the medal stand after running
legs of both PSAC champion 4x400 relay teams
in 2003.
Justin Reichardt finished his rookie season
strong, earning All-PSAC honors in the decathlon.
Steve Winters has also scored in the
decathlon in his career.
Vonkurt Redley was fourth in the 110
hurdles.
Pat Bone, Dave Tidey and Dan Wilde will
lead the distance corps in one of the premier
distance conferences in the country.
heptathlon. The duo ran the final two legs of
the victorious 4x400 relay team.
Jaci Pfeiffer and Talia McKinney return
in the hurdles and relays. Pfeiffer was a
three-time point scorer last year, including an
All-PSAC performance in the indoor 4x400 relay.
She placed in both the 100 and 400 hurdles
outdoors. McKinney scored in the outdoor
believe she’ll factor heavily in the conference
distance scene.
Laura Deller
SOPHOMORE
York/Dallastown
Major: Elementary Education
2005 Highlights: Indoors:
Season-best 17-1 3/
4 in long jump. Outdoor -
16-5 1/4 in the long jump at the LHU Qualifier.
Coach’s Comments: This should be a transition
year for Laura as she switches to the pole
vault. She’s a hard worker and a great student.
She will do well sooner rather than later.
Michelle Hughes
SOPHOMORE
Warminster/
the throws. Look for solid improvement which
will take her to the conference medal stand this
year or next.
Laura Kline
Honors: 2005 ESPN the
All-America second
team, PSAC & East Regional
2005 Highlights: Indoor - 2nd at PSAC Championships
PSAC Championships: 2004 Outdoor-4x400
relay; 2005 Outdoor-400, 4x400 relay.
Coach’s Comments: She may be on the thin
side, but don’t let her looks fool you. Laura Kline
leads our team into battle. She’s fast, tough, dedicated
and has pushed herself to a perfect 4.0
GPA four semesters in-a-row. Look for her at
Nationals in the 400 hurdles this year.
2005 Highlights: Outdoor -
Placed first at the PSAC East
a time of 10:29.21.
Coach’s Comments: Molly made an impact on
the conference distance scene as a freshman, and
despite a slow start in 05-06, should be pivotal
in the conference title hopes of our women.
Renee Marchand
Coach’s Comments: The conference champ in
the outdoor heptathlon, Renee should be a combined-events
threat indoors and outdoors again.
She filled in on the 4x400 last year, and may very
well be carving a permanent niche in that event.
Coach’s Comments: Last year’s only All-
Coach’s Comments: Talia had a solid year in
her new event, the 400 hurdles. Her 65.55 in
the hurdle trials at PSACs was a great start, but
she’s got a lot of improvement left.
Coach’s Comments: Jaci has scored at PSACs
in each of her previous three years, with her
student teaching out of the way in the fall, this
could be her year.
Coach’s Comments: Chrissy finally gets a
Provisionally qualifying indoors in the weight and
outdoors in the hammer, last year was a great
year. She even scored in the triple jump indoors.
This year, she’ll make it to NCAAs.
Amy Schaeffer
2005 Highlights: Outdoor -
Notched a 36-0 1/2 in the
Hall also houses the Golden Bear Sports Medicine department, designated locker rooms for
all intercollegiate athletic teams, and a state-of-the-art fitness room. The arena also served as
the site of a town meeting by President George W. Bush in 2004.
Keystone Field House
Keystone Field House is home to
the KU men’s and women’s indoor
Academics & Athletics at KU
The KU Academic Success Initiative, when fully implemented by the coaching staff,
provides the appropriate support, incentive, and opportunity for students to make a similar
effort toward their academic success as made toward their athletic performance. The Initiative
is based on the expectation that both individual and team academic performance will be
at or above the level of the overall student body. This expectation is built into the evaluation
of coaches and is an integral part of the process of awarding athletic scholarships. KU
provides athletic scholarships to support the academic pursuits of its student-athletes.
Student-athletes are expected to participate in sports because they love to do so.
Continuing indications reveal that the Initiative works and is having a profound and
measurable effect on both academic and athletic performance. Over the past 10 years, KU’s
freshman class of student-athletes has had a significantly higher grade-point average than the
overall freshman class, while the 2004-05 school year saw all student-athletes achieve a
highest-ever GPA of 2.91, surpassing the overall GPA of the Kutztown student body. Also
last year, 103 student-athletes garnered Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-
Athlete honors. During the same period, the athletic success of KU’s teams reached all-time
records.
The KU Academic Success Initiative contains the following components:
The Monitoring of Progress: The academic
progress of student-athletes is continually
tracked and monitored. This includes: GPA
reports, persistence rate reports, close monitoring
of first-time students, and NCAA eligibility
compliance reports.
Course Selection and Registration: In
order to avoid unnecessary conflicts between
athletic events and classes, student-athletes
are provided a registration date earlier than
the rest of the campus student population.
Registration is now done online via the
Internet. Students can go online at any time
to view their schedule, grades, transcript, financial
aid, payments, charges and restrictions
on their account.
Academic Coaching: This year-long program
is based on one-on-one personal contacts
between the coach and the student-athlete.
The meetings are held more frequently
in the fall in recognition of the benefits of
establishing good habits early. During these
meetings, the following topics may be addressed:
seminar follow-up, class attendance,
parental intervention and involvement and
information about advising and registration.
These meetings can also serve to address any
other academic and/or personal matters of
concern to the student-athlete.
Faculty Advising: This is an essential part
of the college experience and is often a major
factor in the ultimate academic success of
students. Advisor meetings are required in
order to register for classes.
Pre-Season Academic Seminars: During
pre-season camps and/or the first week of
classes, athletes may participate in seminars
addressing topics such as time management,
study skills, class participation, student/faculty
relationships and graduation planning.
Materials are provided and used as a reference
throughout the semester.
Career Services Visit For Undeclared
Majors: Incoming students who have not
yet declared a major or who may be unsure
of their chosen major are highly encouraged
to visit the Career Services Office. There,
the students will be tested to measure their
interests and help them select a major.
Referrals For Services to the Department
of Developmental Studies: Student-athletes
are strongly encouraged to make use of
the Department of Developmental Studies’
services in regard to tutoring or other needs
for specialized instruction.
Referrals For Services to the Counseling
and Advisement Center: Trained counselors/faculty
advisors are available to help
with psychological/academic counseling/advisement
issues. Such referrals are available
to all student-athletes.
Mentoring: Student-athletes can be referred
by their coach to either the formal University
mentoring program or to faculty and
professional staff volunteers for more informal
mentoring.
Financial Aid Liaison: The financial aid
liaison provides information to prospects and
student-athletes concerning policies and
guidelines of the financial aid office. Through
the early version process, the liaison provides
prospects with an estimate of potential
funding sources. The liaison provides
student-athletes with information concerning
deadlines and regulations for continued
financial aid, and is available to help families
learn more about the financial aid process.
Library Tour: A library tour is highly recommended
of all incoming student-athletes.
Personal Computer: Each student-athlete
is strongly encouraged to have access to a
networked personal computer.
Recognition of Academic
Accomplishments
The Department of Athletics has developed
a comprehensive program to provide incentive
for and acknowledgement of the many
academic accomplishments of its studentathletes.
Below are some examples of the
program.
Graduation Reception: The athletic department
hosts a reception for graduating student-athletes
and their families at the winter
and spring commencement ceremonies to recognize
the culmination of student-athletes’
education at Kutztown University.
Awards and Honors: KU offers specific
academic scholarships available only to student-athletes.
KU student-athletes are nominated
for all available NCAA, PSAC and
CoSIDA awards.
Scholar-Athlete Banquet: Each year, the
PSAC Scholar-Athletes are recognized at a
banquet in their honor.
Dean’s List Ceremony: All Kutztown University
student-athlete dean’s list recipients
are acknowledged at a basketball game every
year.
