with serious mental illness for over 26 years.
Their unique residential communities are located
within attractive suburban apartment
complexes throughout Philadelphia and surrounding
counties.
Project Transition has grown from a very
small business to a very large small business.
This has come with all the traditional growing
pains associated with growing a business.
Twenty-six years ago, Dr. Crabtree co-founded
Project Transition where he currently serves as
Medical Director. Dr. Crabtree will address
will discuss his need, over time, to become
the risks inherent in serving mental health
patients from a business viability standpoint
and the types of challenges this business poses.
He will finish with talking about ―beginning
accrued over time. In short, how can he retire
and withdraw funds from the business while
keeping the business solvent?
The College of Business Internship Program is designed to enhance the student's formal academic education by providing an opportunity
for the student to test skills and knowledge via exposure to an actual institutional or commercial enterprise.
This supervised experience provides an arena for the practical integration of knowledge during the formal learning process as well as an
opportunity to acquire experience and knowledge beyond that available within the confines of the existing curriculum.
Students benefit both personally and professionally from the expanded perspectives provided by the professional supervisor and the guidance
Junior and senior level business students were asked some questions about “Why an Internship
is Important”. They were asked several questions and below are some of their responses:
SHAWN KEMMERER is a senior accounting major. Shawn did his internship at Herbein & Company during his second semester
of his junior year, Spring 2009. Herbein & Company is an accounting firm located in Reading, PA.
―I attended the accounting club meetings and learned about the ―Meet the Firm Night‖ that the club hosts. I went to this event,
handed out a few resumes and fortunately, Herbein wanted to learn more about me. The rest just fell into place from there.‖
―There are way too many good things that can come out of an internship that a job-seeking graduate can‘t afford to miss. Apply
for as many openings as you can, even if you are not sure if you will want to take your career in that direction. The experience
will be worth it and you exit the internship with an extra sense of confidence.‖
MATTHEW WILEY is a senior marketing major. Matthew did his internship at Reese during the Summer 2009 semester.
Reese is an advertising, marketing and communications account service firm located in Wyomissing, PA.
―I utilized my network and spoke with past interns of Reese.‖
―I was surprised when they asked me to interact directly with clients and to provide my own ideas and suggestions for the
campaigns.‖
―Internships reinforce what you learn in the classroom and more.‖
―My goal was to build a solid network for after graduation.‖
STEPHANIE APPLEGATE is a senior marketing major. Stephanie did her internship with Sorrelli in Summer 2009 semester.
Sorrelli is a wholesale manufacturer of costume jewelry located in Kutztown, PA.
―I attended an internship fair in the spring and met with my supervisor.‖
―I really enjoyed what I learned and what I did at my internship; I would definitely recommend students pursue internships.‖
―I wanted to learn about their business and how they market towards their consumers.‖
―I helped my supervisor in attracting new customers by utilizing a social networking website.‖
SEAN ERVIN is a senior marketing major. Sean did his internship with Enterprise Rent-a-Car in the Summer 2009 semester.
Enterprise Rent-a-Car is the largest privately-owned vehicle rental and leasing company in the US.
―I obtained my internship through the Career Fair and then through interviews at the Career Services office.‖
―I learned all aspects of running a business from marketing and management to sales and customer service.‖
―I was able to learn so much more about business with hands on experience. It also has helped me a great deal in job interviews
when employers ask me, ―Tell me a situation where….‖
―My goal for participating in an internship was to receive academic credit and a job offer.‖
AMANDA SHUMAN is a senior marketing major. Amanda did her internship with Reading Phillies in the Spring 2009 semester.
The Reading Phillies is a minor league baseball club.
―I found a few local sports teams that I was interested in interning with and sent my resume and cover letter. I then went in for
interviews. Once I found out which internships I had been selected for, I chose the one that I felt would give me the best experience.
The Reading Phillies Baseball Club.‖
―What surprised me the most about my internship was the amount of time and effort involved. During the off season from
January to March, I worked 40 hour weeks. Once the season started in early April the hours more than doubled sometimes putting
in over 100 a week. Another surprising factor is the amount of responsibility I had. I was in charge of a few specific theme
nights. I had to find sponsors, make contracts, and advertise the night. The success or failure of the event was up to how much
work I put into it.‖
―I would absolutely recommend that every student have at least one internship upon graduation. I know that with the Reading
Phillies they only hire their interns. They will never hire outside the base of past interns. With most all companies they want
you to have past business experience. Plus an internship is a great networking tool and can lead to many job opportunities.‖
The only other comment I have is to not take your internship for granted. It is an incredible opportunity to be surrounded and
learn from business professionals. Be a sponge and absorb everything around you. Show that you have great work ethic and
take charge. Your superiors will notice. An internship will look great on your resume and can lead to either a job or a recommendation.
Give it your all.‖
* You can view the department that issued the hold through Online Student Services, and contact them directly
to resolve the restriction
Advisement and registration for your Spring 2010 courses will be upon us soon. As you are aware, you must complete all seven of the
Business Core courses, ACC 121, ACC 122, BUS 120, BUS 131, BUS 171, ECO 011, and ECO 012, and attain a 2.0 grade point average
in these courses before you may take upper level (300 level) courses in any of the Business disciplines.
If you will have not successfully completed all the Business Core courses by the beginning of the Spring 2010 semester, be sure to register
for the core courses you need and complete them before you pursue upper level courses. If you will have completed all seven courses
but will not have a 2.0 average in the seven Business Core courses by then, be sure to register for a sufficient number of core courses to
raise your core GPA to 2.0 before you pursue upper level courses.
If you register for upper level courses for Spring 2010 and are found to have not completed the Business Core with a 2.0 GPA, you are
subject to being dropped from those upper level courses. Each department will check the course rosters of its upper level courses, and purge
the rosters of students who do not meet the requirements for enrollment in those courses. As an additional consequence, you may then find
it difficult to register for those Business Core courses that you need to take or repeat.
You should also know that you don‘t have to complete the Business Core courses to enroll in MGM 210, Principles of Management, and
MKT 210, Principles of Marketing, but you must complete 43 credits before you take them. If you have not completed 43 credits by the
beginning of Spring 2010, you will similarly be dropped from the rosters of MGM 210 and MKT 210.
If you have any questions about any of this, please see your academic advisor as soon as possible.
Their first official meeting of the Fall Semester
Speaker, Richelyn Penn-Mekile from Human Resources Office here
at Kutztown University. She gave the students helpful advice on the
difficulty of finding a job in the real world. She told the students
that ―reading a job ad and what it offers is a reflection of the organization‖.
Internship Panel held on October 22, 2009
Three accounting majors detailed their internship experiences
within different sectors of the accounting industry. The panelists
held internships with WTAS, the Kutztown University
Foundation, and the Department of the Treasury in Washington,
DC. Each panelist began with an explanation of how he or she
found the opportunity for the internship, followed by an overview
of the basic responsibilities of the intern. The importance
of networking was apparent here; one intern found his opportunity
through the Accounting Club's "Meet the Firm Night"
while another found his through a professor in the College of
Business. They described how they were evaluated by their
organization and what was expected of them on day-to-day basis.
All three panelists viewed their experiences in a very positive
light and cited multiple benefits of the internships, such as a
better understanding of how to communicate in a professional
business setting, developing better time management skills and
learning to think critically.
