3. Test results
Application field and work procedure
This road maintenance is designed for use by forest enterprises and collectives
especially within the framework of a road maintenance cooperation
The practicality of the unit for small-scale enterprises and sideline farmer / foresters
depends on a sufficiently large road network and good cooperation with the contracting
body.
The grader is mainly suited for maintaining loose gravel road surfaces (optimal grain
size 0/15 - 0/35).
The device drags road surface materials, removes grass and herbs, and spreads road
materials in one pass. The 2 front v-shaped grader blades are especially designed for
levelling the central ridge between the wheel tracks. Several passes are necessary on
very rough roads requiring a high maintenance effort. The independent control of the
grader blades enable the operator to work just one side (left or right) of the road.
The work quality depends of the precise adjustment of the device.
The unit cannot be used for grading roads when maintaining extremely compacted
surface layers (re-profiling) or for road repair work.
Consequent road surface maintenance with this device, especially when carried out in
wet weather, significantly increases the lifespan of the road and reduces grass and
herb growth between road edge and embankment.
Performance:
The performance attained when using the road grader depends on the weather
conditions, the tractor (engine power class, working speed) and the width of the road or
the number of required passes across the road.
In a well-organised maintenance undertaking and using a 4WD agricultural tractor with
an engine power of about 80 kW, the unit is capable of maintaining about 4.000 m –
6.000 m of road with a heavy load surface consisting of loose materials, per operating
hour.
Required tractor
For safe and rational operation a 4WD agricultural tractor with front ballast is generally
recommended
For use on level ground, tractors with at least 60 kW are sufficient. Tractors with at least
80kW engine power are recommended for frequent working in cleared terrain.
Te relative large offset of the unit noticeably impairs the mobility of the machine.
The road grader can be attached using a quick-hitch.
Page 6
Availability, reliability, durability
The construction of the road maintenance device is solid and the durability is good. The
unit is well-designed and sophisticated.
The reliability is good. However, it is prudent to avoid soiling the control elements, in
order to ensure that the machine can be adjusted or fixed using normal forces.
There were no defects or failures during the test period. The durability of the surface
coating is good.
Ergonomics (operation – physical strain)
The operation of the grader is easy, however, the operator should have some
experience in using the device. The actuating forces for adjusting the grader blades are
normal. The actuating forces for controlling and adjusting the device during operation
are very low. Levers and buttons for the electro-hydraulic fine adjustment are located in
cab so that the device can be controlled while driving.
The operator must turn backwards frequently to check the blade carriers and work
quality, thus adopting an awkward posture, which is strenuous over a longer period of
time.
Assembly and maintenance
The grader can be attached to or removed from the tractor in less than 15 minutes.
The maintenance effort is low.
Stability
The design of the grader means that it can be safely placed on hard ground.
Arbeitssicherheit
The road grader Type “SWO 1“ was tested for work safety (GS-test) at the Deutsche
Prüfstelle für Land- und Forsttechnik (DPLF)..
