The Last of the Line...<br />

The USS Cabot (CVL-28) was commissioned<br />

<strong>Jul</strong>y 24, 1943. The last<br />

CVL survivor, it was sold to Spain in<br />

1972. The Cabot-Dedalo was<br />

returned to the U.S. in 1989. “Iron<br />

Woman,” as she was known, lay at<br />

the Global Maritime Slip, Brownsville,<br />

TX until scrapped in 1993 after vets<br />

failed to raise sufficient funds to save<br />

her. The Cabot earned nine battle<br />

stars and was awarded the<br />

Presidential Unit Citation for WWII<br />

service.<br />

The USS Cabot was one of eight Fast Carrier Cruisers in the US Navy fleet. It was 625 ft in length with a<br />

beam of 60ft and could reach a speed of 35 knots. She carried a crew of 2,200 and launched Corsairs, Wild<br />

Cats, Bear Cats , TBMs and the F86 Saber Jet from her decks.<br />
