1858; Murdered, Killed by Jesse Turner, born Buncombe Co., N. C.; married, white male, living on Middle Fork of Ky. River. See enclosed copy of Microfilm pa~e. He md. Ca. 1832 to Sarah Jane "Jennie" Mayes. b. March. 1806; b. (1812 per 1850 Cens.). d. after 1900 Cens .. a dIo old David Mayes & Mary . (I believe firmly David Turner. their son. is named after Sarah's father. David Mayes.) James Turner was raising his family on the Middle Fork of the River. He & his sons & relatives had been engaged in logging for some time. J.Green Trimbel wrote an article for the Jackson Times some years ago, describing this way of life: .,." At the time Breathitt County was created the people relied principally on the transportation of coal and saw logs down the river as a means of making money. They built their own boats, which were from fifty to sixty feet long, and as there were no saw mills in the county they had to saw the planks by hand with rip saws and hew the gunnels and stachions with a broad-axe. A considerable income was derived from the sale of deer-skins, fur, honey, bees-wax, and ginseng, with all of which the county was bountifully supplied." 'Recollections of Breathitt' . Library.Covington, Ky., which reads thus: "James Turner White 53 yr. Old male Farmer married Dec. 20 th (date of death in 1858) cause of death: Murdered. Killed by Jesse Turner. Place of birth was listed as Buncombe Co .. N.C. (not Tenn.); Place of Death named as Middle Fork. I have enclosed a copy of the microfilm page, as much controversy seems to surround James's death. For years it was told that his body was never recovered and was buried somewhere near where he was killed. However, it is clear that the clerk who recorded the death had knowledge of what occurred, or else would not have written it on the page. It seems there may have been a cover up of some kind, as no one ever seems to have been brought to justice for the murder, that we know about. We do know that in 1900 Census, Sarah Jane "Jenny" Turner is living with her son, Jesse "Shifty" Turner, who md. his cousin, Jemima Herald. See p. 111 for their CH. Jenny Turner died sometime after 1900 cens. Item 1.: Jesse "Shifty" Turner was referred to in the deed of May 14, 1913 as Jesse Turner, Sr., and was the ... 'party of the second part.' All others named were parties of the 'first part' and all were conveying land they had acquired "from their deceased father, James Turner, containing 100 acres, more or less."
