EMBARGO: FOR IMMIDIATE RELEASE
DATE: 20 JUNE 2013
TOWARDS ENHANCED LEARNER PERFORMANCE
The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Senzo Mchunu, would like to wish all learners much
deserved rest as they will be taking a break for winter holidays starting from tomorrow, 21 June 2013.
However, not all learners are going to enjoy this winter vacation.
The improvement of the schooling system requires that interventions made are sustainable and that all
components of the system are mobilized to work towards the common goal. To this end, in collaboration
with teacher unions, the Department has launched a Matric Intervention Programme to support all learners
to prepare for the end of the year examinations. The purpose of this programme is to ensure that learners
are provided with dedicated support on a sustainable basis and that attention is targeted at subject in
which there is underperformance with the view to improve.
Learner Camps which are going to take place in all districts targets all schools that obtained less that 60%
in 2012 Matric results and targets subjects like Physical Science, Mathematics, Accounting, Life Sciences
and English FAL. This programme will run from the beginning of 2013 winter vacation and continue
throughout the year until all learners have written their NSC examinations at the end of the year.
The training of the total of 608 lead teachers for all five subjects took place from the 12 – 14 of June 2013.
transported back on 28 June at 14h00. The Department has impressed upon all districts to ensure that
buses must be on time and in good condition, that drivers are fully licensed to drive the buses, that buses
should not carry more than 70 learners and that all bus companies provide a certificate of road worthiness.
“Much as we were encouraged by our Grade 12 performance in 2012, we will not rest until we pass
all our learners in the province. As a Department we are working tirelessly to achieve our vision of a
well-educated, skilled and highly developed citizenry. As we are beginning the countdown to the
NSC examinations for 2013, we have declared school holidays and weekends as normal school
days. Principals of schools, teachers and learners should take heed of the countdown and double
their efforts towards the finishing line that will ensure that we improve on the performance in the
2013 NSC Examinations,” said MEC Senzo Mchunu.
NOTE: SCHOOLS THAT OBTAINED MORE THAN 60% ARE EXPECTED TO SUMBITT THIER
PROGRAMMES TO THE DEPARTMENT ON HOW THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE THIS
PROGRAMME IN THEIR OWN REPSECTIVE SCHOOLS.
