LAA Announces New National President
Just so many
reasons to
Celebrate!
As 2011 begins to
draw to a close, it is
Mike Owen an opportune time to
assess our association’s “landscape”
by looking back at the events and
achievements of the past year and
look forward to the excitement of the
coming year.
Looking back, it is only appropriate to
review these achievements during a
tough economic period in the context
of the marvellous contribution by
Brad Harrison, our outgoing National
President, Joene Baker (Executive
Manager) and her loyal and dedicated
team. Significant outcomes (good
or bad) rarely happen by chance,
but rather are normally the result of
consistent, intelligent and tireless effort
and teamwork, which is clearly evident
in the collaborative manner that Brad
and Jo have guided the fortunes of our
Association.
Under similar circumstances, very
few businesses, let alone not-forprofit
industry associations, could
simultaneously keep a strong and
vibrant membership base, a supportive
and committed portfolio of “Friends”,
maintain and grow existing member
programs whilst developing exciting
new offerings, deliver a great diversity
of events throughout the country,
and all within the framework of an
enhanced, stable financial platform!
So why are these individuals special?
Simply put, there is “old fashioned”
respect, admiration, trust and honesty
that enables real communication
to occur, bringing efficiency and
substantial traction to their work. After
many years as a participative Member,
progressive Committee Member and
Director, and the past three years as
an excellent National President, Brad
has decided to devote the quality time
that his business and family thoroughly
deserve, taking a breather as a proud
and thoroughly engaged Member of
our Association.
Brad deserves all of our thanks for his
outstanding achievements in leading
the LAA through challenging times, and
thankfully, Jo will enjoy an upcoming
break to bring her boundless energy
and much needed pragmatism to an
exciting 2011.
The new year promises to deliver a
full and exciting itinerary for emerging
and experienced logisticians alike.
Along with an exciting array of new
Short Courses, expanded National
Events, extended National Programs
(with one very close to my heart in
LAA/apics Supply Chain Mentoring
Program expanding into South Australia
to support the Eastern Seaboard
programs), we have the Smart
Conference 2011 being held in Sydney
on 25 and 26 May.
The biannual Smart Conference 2011
is clearly Australia’s leading supply
chain event, bringing together the
energy and aspirations of our emerging
practitioners with the wisdom and
reflective experience of established
supply chain professionals. This is a
rare and powerful forum that offers
highly relevant, quality national and
international speakers and topics in an
open and friendly social environment
that supports the foundation of new
commercial relationships and the
renewal of existing and sometimes
neglected industry friendships. As the
LAA is the organiser and part-owner of
this wonderful event, it is imperative
that all members support this initiative
and make it the proud and successful
industry showpiece that it deserves.
In 2011 we will continue to seek
feedback from our membership on the
real value of existing and envisaged
programs, so that we adapt to both
your needs, the needs of the industry
and the evolving environment. We will

Another Meet the LAA event was hosted
at the NSW Department of Industry and
Investment, Sydney. Again we met many
new members along with our Friends of
the LAA. Steve O’Keefe, Royal Australian
Navy, also provided an enlightening
presentation on Naval Logistics and his
experiences with the HMAS KANIMBLA.
We thank Steve once again for this
learning opportunity.

Call for Editorial Submissions
LAA is now taking editorial submissions for the Dispatch Newsletter 2011.
11 issues are published annually with submissions taken for either 750 or 1500
word articles with the following philosophy:
• Articles will be considered by the LAA editorial board but are not guaranteed
for publication should they not meet the editorial board’s criteria.
• Articles may be single authored or co-authored.
• Articles will be considered on an array of topics such as: logistics, supply
chain, transportation, operations management, supply, procurement, import
and export, customers, sales, outsourcing, offshoring, people in the supply
chain, and any topics related to these areas in our industry.
• Articles will be considered on the basis of issues-based content. Supplier
information or advertorials will not be considered.
• Articles will be considered on topics such as: Materials Handling, Warehousing
and Distribution, IT Capability, 3PL/4PL, Freight forwarding, Human Resources
issues, Manufacturing, and other issues and trends in logistics and supply chain.
• Case studies, opinion pieces (with multiple source views and supporting
arguments), research summaries and outcomes, are good examples and
may include graphs, diagrams and pictures to support the article. Other links
to websites, multi-media, simulations etc., will also be considered for
relevance to the article and members.
• Supplier information or advertorials will not be considered.
• It is recommended that a brief concept, key points and overview be sent to
the Editorial Board for feedback and comment prior to a complete article
being written.
• Final publication will include a photo of the contributor as well as name, title
and business.
• Note: In some cases selected articles may be published in a later issue than
originally intended if the Editorial Board believes that recent events or current
activities result in the topic of another article being more relevant for that issue.
