1.3 Libraries
For those of you who have not studied at Cardiff before, an induction session has been arranged on
enrolment day, to introduce you to the facilities and resources available in the Arts and Social
Studies Library (ASSL). The time of the session is listed in the enrolment programme.
Even if you are already familiar with the library, as a postgraduate you will be using research
resources that you may not have encountered before. A selection of these resources is listed at the
end of this handbook, and you are encouraged to explore those that are related to your interests.
We also have a small Ancient History library, the Sheila White Library, in room 4.09 of the
Humanities Building. This has extra copies of popular books and periodicals for the study of
Ancient History and Classical Archaeology, which can be borrowed by signing them out in the
logbook. The room also has some work space, a networked computer, and wireless network access.
1.4 Seminars and events
As a postgraduate student, you are part of the research community in the School, and we would
encourage you to take full advantage of all the research events that take place here during the year.
The most important of these are the Ancient History research seminars, which are on (roughly)
alternate Mondays at 5.10 pm. These feature speakers from Cardiff and other universities, and are
an excellent way of learning about the latest research in Ancient History and broadening your
knowledge of the subject beyond your specific area of interest. They also form an important part of
your training in oral presentation skills, so it is essential that you attend them. Seminars normally
last for 45 minutes, plus time for questions. There are also four public lectures each year, which are
held jointly with the local branch of the Classical Association. A full programme will be circulated
early in each semester.
There are many other seminars, lectures and events in the School and its associated departments,
which you are very welcome to attend. These are advertised on the School website at
http://www.cf.ac.uk/share/newsandevents/events/, and on the noticeboards around the School.
