4. <strong>MA</strong> in the History and Archaeology of the Greek and Roman<br />
World<br />
This interdisciplinary programme is designed to enable you to develop your skills in interpreting<br />
both literary and archaeological evidence from the ancient world, and use them to explore topics of<br />
your choice.<br />
A. Taught Stage (October–May)<br />
1. Research training (40 credits)<br />
All students take four 10-credit modules:<br />
Autumn Semester<br />
Spring Semester<br />
HST 301: Introduction to Research Methods HST 011: Understanding Texts*<br />
or<br />
HST 303: Data Presentation and Interpretation*<br />
HST 305: Writing the Past<br />
HST 306: Speaking the Past<br />
*If you would like to attend both of these modules, it should be possible — please see the relevant<br />
module tutor (but you can only be assessed for one of them).<br />
Contact hours: 1–2 per week.<br />
2. Theory and methodology (20 credits)<br />
All students take one of the following modules:<br />
Autumn Semester<br />
Spring Semester<br />
HST 002: Themes and Approaches in Ancient History (20 credits)<br />
HST 203: Themes in Classical Archaeology (20 credits)<br />
HST 536: Interpreting the Past (40 credits)<br />
Contact hours: for a 20-credit module, 10 1-hour classes, in alternate weeks throughout the<br />
Autumn and Spring Semesters; for a 40-credit module, 20 classes; tutorial discussions.<br />
3. Language training (20 credits)<br />
All students take one of the following modules:<br />
Autumn Semester<br />
Contact hours: 1–3 per week.<br />
Spring Semester<br />
HST 024: Postgraduate Greek I<br />
HST 025: Postgraduate Greek II<br />
HST 022: Postgraduate Latin I<br />
HST 023: Postgraduate Latin II<br />
4. Specialised option modules (40 credits)<br />
Students choose 40 credits from the list below (20 credits if you chose HST 536 as your core theory<br />
module). Modules are worth 20 credits unless otherwise specified. In addition to your core theory<br />
module, you may take the other theory modules as options.<br />
