Director’s Note
The fall season is ramping up at lacma. Between September and November we have no fewer than ten new exhibitions
opening. From L.A. icons Ken Price and Ed Ruscha, both of whom have exhibitions opening in September, to 130 beautiful
seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French ceramics on view in Daily Pleasures (October 6), to outstanding drawings
by surrealist greats like Salvador Dalí, Rene Magritte, Joan Miró, and more in Drawing Surrealism (October 21). In November
we are excited to open two incredible exhibitions—Stanley Kubrick and Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy.
These will both be specially ticketed exhibitions. As a benefit of membership, you will receive free tickets to both—a
token of our thanks for your essential support.
Indeed, your support has enabled lacma to accomplish a great deal in the last few years. With the additions of the
Resnick Pavilion and bcam, our ability to present a greater number of exhibitions had increased dramatically. Six years
ago we mounted just nine special exhibitions in an entire year. In our most recent fiscal year that number doubled to
eighteen. Additionally, more of our permanent collection has been on view than ever before—from Egyptian antiquities
to masterpieces of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese art, to art from Europe, Latin America, and more. Your membership
supports our efforts to present it all. Thank you.
In addition to the many exhibitions opening this season, there are even more reasons to keep coming back to lacma.
I hope you’ve had a chance to stop in to C+M, our new coffee shop located on the plaza just across from the Art of the
Americas Building. The new café is overseen by Patina’s Joachim Splichal and Ray’s executive chef Kris Morningstar,
with pastries by chef Josh Graves, coffee from Intelligentsia, and delicious milkshakes and desserts. It’s the perfect spot
to stop for a pick-me-up while you’re in between galleries or on your way to a film screening in the Bing Theater or other
events. Take a look at the calendar and event listings on the next few pages: lacma is brimming with activity. Exhibitions,
films, concerts, and more—any time you come, you’ll find something inspiring.
Art + Film Gala to Honor Ed Ruscha, Stanley Kubrick
Now in its second year, lacma’s annual Art + Film Gala
brings together notables from the art, film, fashion, and
entertainment industries to honor icons from the art
and film worlds while supporting the museum’s overall
mission. This year the gala, to be held October 27, will
honor artist Ed Ruscha and filmmaker Stanley Kubrick,
with director Steven Spielberg paying tribute to the late
filmmaker. Once again, the event is co-chaired by actor
Leonardo DiCaprio and lacma trustee Eva Chow, with
Gucci generously serving as presenting sponsor. Exhibitions
for both Ruscha and Kubrick will also be on view
at lacma: Ed Ruscha: Standard opens September 22, while
Stanley Kubrick opens to the public November 1. There
will also be related public programs highlighting
the works of both artists on October 26 and 27; visit
lacma.org for detailed program information.
Levitated Mass Opens to Thousands
More than 6,000 people came to lacma for Michael
Heizer’s Levitated Mass on June 24—the largest number
of opening-day visitors for an artwork or exhibition in
lacma’s history. The monumental sculpture has remained
a popular draw for locals and tourists alike all summer
long, drawing more than 130,000 visitors to date. Also
on view now is the exhibition Michael Heizer: Actual Size,
featuring the artist’s large-scale photographs of natural
rock formations and a room-size projection of his 1969
artwork Munich Depression, scaled to the actual size of
the original piece.
Robert Looker, 1922–2012
The museum lost a great friend and patron when lacma
trustee Robert Looker passed away on June 28, 2012. Mr.
Looker was a member of the board since 1998 and
actively served on several board committees. He had an
astute eye for collecting and supported the breadth of
lacma’s encyclopedic collection as a member of the
board’s Acquisition Committee and the Collectors
Committee. Many objects on view in lacma’s galleries,
from textiles to modern and contemporary works to
objects from Southeast Asia and Africa were purchased
thanks to Mr. Looker’s support. He will be missed.
New Acquisitions for Art Here and Now
Since 1963 lacma has been supporting young and
emerging Los Angeles artists through an annual acquisitions
program, originally known as the Young Talent
Award (yta) and subsequently renamed Art Here and
Now (ahan). This year, through the support of the
acquisitions group Art Here and Now: Studio Forum,
lacma has acquired six artworks by five artists:
Mark Hagen, William E. Jones, Sanya Kantarovsky,
Dianna Molzan, and Brenna Youngblood. The objects
range from digital video to painting, sculpture, and
three-dimensional mixed media. These artists join a
legacy of past yta and ahan recipients that include Chris
Burden, Mary Corse, Tim Hawkinson, Mark Bradford,
Ruben Ochoa, and more.
In Wonderland Travels to Mexico
In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists
in Mexico and the United States, which closed at lacma
in May and then traveled to the Musée national des
beaux-arts du Québec, will complete its North American
tour when it opens at Museo de Arte Moderno (mam),
Mexico City, on September 27. The exhibition, which
was co-organized by lacma and mam, will join another
lacma-organized exhibition also currently on view in
Mexico City: Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World,
at the Museo Nacional de Historia, Castillo de Chapultepec,
through October 7.
Lewis Klahr Films in Stark Bar
Since opening at lacma in 2011, Stark Bar has featured
time-based media works on its monitors, including work
by Vito Acconci, Brody Condon, Nan Hoover, and others.
Beginning in October, lacma will feature the work of
internationally acclaimed Los Angeles filmmaker
Lewis Klahr. Klahr’s experimental films have previously
been included in the Whitney Biennial, the International
Film Festival Rotterdam, the Wexner Center for the
Arts, and the permanent collection of the Museum of
Modern Art. Klahr assembles exhilarating and enigmatic
collages comprised of meticulously culled images and
textures from an array of midcentury ephemera. A
selection of Klahr’s films will be on view at Stark Bar
through winter 2013.
