Services for Veteran Students

Below is a list of services available for military veterans and reservists at
LaGuardia Community College. Three college areas participate through an
Advisory Board: the Division of Academic Affairs (the Veterans Faculty Advisor
and Counseling Department), the Division of Student Affairs (the Veterans Affairs
Coordinator, Admissions, and Students with Disabilities), plus the Division of
Continuing Education (the Veteran Services Office).
The Veteran’s Advisory Board: Discusses veteran’s issues across campus,
plans and coordinates social activities for veterans with an advising function and
events for students, staff, and faculty awareness.
The Veterans Faculty Advisor serves as the Academic Affairs representative to
the Board and as liaison to the Developmental Advising Committee and its
Orientation Sub-Committee. Jason Smith is the Veterans Faculty Advisor who
holds hours specifically for advising veteran students. He is located in E103S at

The Office of Veterans’ Affairs (C-107) certifies veterans for’ educational
benefits including tutorial, work-study and vocational rehabilitation. To be eligible
for Veterans Tutorial Benefits you must be receiving at least half time
educational benefits. If you qualify, you will be entitled to 12 months of tutorial
benefits to a maximum of $100.00 per month. Veterans who are receiving full
time benefits are eligible for Work-Study, which allows veterans to work up to
750 hours per year at $7.15 per hour. Vocational Rehabilitation is available to
veteran students who have at least a 20% disability rating from the Veterans
Administration and pays for tuition, fees, and a monthly stipend. Dependents also
qualify for some benefits. Stanley Rumph is the Veterans Affairs Coordinator

The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) provides services for veterans
and other students with disabilities to ensure access to College programs. It
offers personal, academic, career, and accommodations counseling, evaluation
referrals, testing for learning disabilities, and adaptive/assistive technology.

Academic Advisement and Counseling help students connect their
educational and career goals and advisement is mandatory for students with less
than 30 credits. Academic advisors help students review their degree
requirements and decide on courses for the next semester. However, the
ultimate responsibility for decision-making rests with the student. Useful materials
include next semester’s schedule of classes, an advisement schedule for majors
(see department office), an advisement form, and use of DegreeWorks
(https://degreeworks.laguardia.edu/prod/) – a self-advisement tool to track
progress towards completing degree requirements and planning future
registrations. You will need your student ID number (9-digits) and Password (6-
digit PIN) to log into this program and you should also refer to the College
Catalog to understand degree requirements. You may reach the Counseling

Veteran Services Office (C 371) offers FREE 6-week evening College Prep and
GED classes for military veterans through a federally funded Veterans Upward
Bound grant. The Office assists veterans with GI educational benefits counseling,
college admissions, retention, and referral services. The Office can be reached at

Other Services or Veterans
Credit for Prior Learning: Veterans are entitled from 6 to 16 college credits
based on the length of active duty, military and employment training and life

Through the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), you may earn from
3 to 12 college credits toward a college degree for each CLEP exam taken,
depending on the exam subject and the policy of the college or university.

The Student Veterans Club is for all veteran students and membership is also
open to veterans’ dependents and supporters. Meetings are held on
Wednesdays during Club Hour (2:00 PM). The Club’s official Facebook site,
