ALL ABOUT?
La Trobe University is opening its
doors twice this year and inviting
year 10, 11 and 12 students and
parents to Experience La Trobe.
This is your chance to be a uni
student for a day and get the inside
scoop on what really happens after
secondary school.
Participate in workshops of your
choice, find out about student life
and check out the campus, including
student accommodation. If you have
any questions — university staff
and students will be there to help
you out.

Accounting skills come in handy
for all kinds of situations in the
workforce. Participate in this fun,
interactive workshop to learn
more about what career paths
and opportunities await graduates
beyond traditional accounting
roles — and how La Trobe’s Work

Agricultural Science:
Be a parasitologist
for a day
Session C
In this interactive workshop you
can learn about the problems
caused by worms in the sheep and
cattle industries, how to identify
wormy animals and the methods of
controlling the worms.
Animal and Veterinary
Biosciences — What it is
and where can it take you?
Session B
‘Meow, bark, moo, roar, cheep,
gobble’ — all of these sounds are
heard daily in the veterinarian
profession. However, they are not
thought of as noises. They are
welcomed by those who have a
passion for animals. If you have
a passion for animals and want
to find out where our Animal and
Veterinary Biosciences degree can

hands-on activities, discovering how
history is reconstructed through
the study of bones, stone tools, and
environmental evidence.

Dreaming of number crunching
and spreadsheets? Probably not,
right? Lucky you’re interested in
Economics then! This workshop is a
lively introduction into the discipline
that questions one of the driving
forces behind human interaction.
Find out how you can kick-start
your career in original thinking with
a La Trobe Economics degree.
Education:
Learning to teach
Session A/B
Ever wondered what kind of a
learner you are, or what kind of
learning opportunities best suit you?
Becoming a teacher is as much about
learning as it is about teaching. Find
out how learning theories shape
teachers’ work, and try some great
hands-on activities that demonstrate
how different learning styles appeal
to different learners.
Electronic Engineering:
Build your own
laser tag zapper Session A
Lasertag is a worldwide game where
each player has a zapper and has to
try to zap or tag the other players’
zappers before being ‘shot’. You
will solder your very own laser tag
and after you’re done making your
device, let the games begin! Make
sure you bring your friends along so
they can join the Lasertag battle too.
After the workshop you can keep
your tag so the battles can continue
long after the La Trobe workshop.
Please note these devices are safe. They
do not use lasers. Only Infrared (IR) LEDs
are used for transmission.
Environmental, outdoor
and physical education:
Why work in an office? Session B
Interested in the natural environment?
Find out about our fabulous outdoor
education department and the career
options available to our graduates.
You can choose a course with a strong
environmental focus or concentrate
on outdoor leadership through
rock-climbing, skiing and white-water
paddling. The most important thing

Session B
La Trobe uses world-class teaching
and practical learning to get you
on track for a career in the lucrative
world of banking and finance. Hear
about our diverse range of specialist
areas and how the industry has
changed since the GFC. You may
even pick up some handy tips for
managing your own finances!
Food for thought! Dietetics and
Human Nutrition Session A/C
Our delicious food and nutrition
sessions will outline the skills
and knowledge required to help
people make food choices aimed
at improving health and preventing
diet-related diseases. Do you want
to know the difference between a
dietician and a nutritionist? Find out
by attending the sessions and take
part in some hands-on activities
showcasing the roles of dieticians
and nutritionists.
Genetics for the real world —
Science (Applications
in Society)
Session A
Arguments about who we actually
look like could easily be resolved by
having a better understanding of
genetics. Our workshop will equip
you to be the wiser, calmer member
of your family when genetics turns
life into a soap opera.

Management
Session A

them any questions about the
course and the university! Hands-on
activities will include a workshop on
medical terminology and coding.
Health Sciences:
The Zombies are
coming!
Session A/C
Do you have what it takes to
stop a zombie outbreak and save
humanity? Find out what roles
health science professionals can
play in a potential zombie outbreak
on campus! Discover the many
important careers on offer in the
exciting fields of public health,
health promotion and anatomy and
physiology.

Heart football!
Session C
Got skills? Show us! Enjoy the fresh
air and come and have a kick with
some of the Melbourne Heart crew
on the La Trobe lawns in a round
robin soccer comp. Our unique
educational partnership with
Melbourne Heart allows students
studying in the areas of allied health,
journalism, event management
and marketing the possibility of
undertaking a placement with the
A-League team, putting their skills
to use in a professional football club
on and off the field!
IT and Computer Science:
Building your own
iPad/iOS apps Session B
You will be modifying the source
code of a real iPad application to
change how it functions. You’ll
be able to see the effects of the
changes in real-time by deploying
the application on an iPad. Some
activities include modifying the
output of the random number
generator and changing images and
sounds the application uses as it’s
played.
Journalism for today Session B
An informative and interactive
workshop that demonstrates how
journalism and sport journalism
are studied at La Trobe. The
field of journalism is constantly
evolving. Get an introduction to the
journalism industry in Australia, an
insight into the different aspects
and markets of this creative industry
and explore the role of journalism in
the digital age.
Kayaking — Get adventurous
with the La Trobe University
Sports Centre Session B
Had enough of the classroom? Well
get adventurous with the La Trobe
University Sports Centre! The Sports
Centre offers amazing facilities
for students and visitors including
a swimming pool, gymnasium,
exercise studio, rock climbing wall,
tennis courts, basketball and netball
courts, soccer pitch, footy fields and
much, much more. So get active and
come and check out the swimming
pool with this exciting kayaking
activity! And don’t forget to bring
your bathers!

Sport has exploded into a multimillion
dollar industry more
significant than just meat pies and

residential colleges. Take a guided
tour and check them out. You can
chat with students and staff along
the way for informed opinions and
accommodation tips.
Looking at Orthoptics Session A
If you have an interest in eyes look
no further — this is the session for
you! The first part of the workshop
will provide a brief introduction to
Orthoptics and what its all about.
The second part of the workshop
will include hands-on practical
activities assessing vision, colour
vision and even some retinal
photography (find out what this is
by attending the sessions!).
Make it with Marketing Session B
Interested in how the music in
a supermarket can affect your
purchase? And what really makes
you want to wear skinny jeans
instead of flares? Learn some
clever Marketing tricks and how a
degree in this creative discipline

media? Learn the tips and tricks
of communicating a message in
our introduction session. Strategic
Communication teaches you how
to analyse and understand public
relations, advertising, marketing and
journalism and how they combine to
shape public attitudes and actions.
Nursing and Midwifery:
A simulated
experience
Session A/B/C
Experience a simulated clinical ward
environment, where you can take
part in caring for a ‘mock’ patient.
You’ll have the chance to assess
a ‘mock’ pregnant woman, hear a
baby’s heart rate, and conduct the
assessment of a mother and baby
following birth. You will gain an
understanding of some of the skills
required by nurses and midwives in
clinical practice.

This session will test your ability to

the clock to ‘save lives’. You’ll be
presented with actual medical
images and scenarios, throwing
you into the challenge of making
life-saving decisions appropriate

students. They’ll show you the

to, and you can ask the students

Physiotherapy and
Podiatry: The A to Z
of rehabilitation
Session A/B
Secret parents business:
An information session
just for Mums and Dads Session A
For those with an interest in
rehabilitation, this session is a
must. You’ll find out about the
many different types of movement
disorders treated by physiotherapists
and podiatrists, who deal with
people of all ages and background.
Politics, Law & Change Session A
Designed just for parents, this
session covers information on how
new university students become
independent, the benefits of
University study, how to support
your child through VCE, how
selection and fee structures work,
and what student life is really like at
La Trobe.
Do you want to learn more about
international relations? How about
the role that politics and legal studies
play in the international arena? Come
to this workshop to find out how
global conflict affects us everyday,
and how it influences the way we can
interact with the rest of the world.
Prosthetics and Orthotics:
Making a difference Session C
This workshop will introduce
the working environment of the
profession of the Prosthetist/
Orthotist (P&O). The course content
will outline what prosthetics and
orthotics is, what the P&O does,
how to get into the program, course
structure, and review the current
activities of the undergraduate
masters program.
Psychology: What’s
inside your head?
10 Experience La Trobe 2013
Session B/C
Come and find out about all the
different things psychologists are
interested in and how you can
become a psychologist. You’ll
learn psychology is much more
than the diagnosis and treatment
of psychological disorders, and it
includes the study of personality,
emotion, learning, memory,
thinking, language and more. During
this session you might even learn a
little bit about what goes on inside
your head!
Social Work:
You will make a difference
Session B
What is social work all about? Find
out about the many opportunities
available in this field and gain an
understanding of what social work is
all about. The workshop will outline
the various roles performed by
social work graduates and the many
interesting career paths available.
Participants will also get a chance
to get a feel for the profession by
taking part in various role play and
situational activities.
Speech Pathology and
Occupational Therapy:
Getting your head
around recovery Session B/C
Experience what is involved in
assisting a patient to regain mobility
after suffering severe head trauma
or stroke — the workshop will cover
occupational therapy strategies
to aid recovery along with the
implementation of programs to help
the patient improve concentration,
memory and communication skills
during their recovery.
