ALL ABOUT?<br />

<strong>La</strong> <strong>Trobe</strong> <strong>University</strong> is opening its<br />

doors twice this year and inviting<br />

year 10, 11 and 12 students and<br />

parents to <strong>Experience</strong> <strong>La</strong> <strong>Trobe</strong>.<br />

This is your chance to be a uni<br />

student for a day and get the inside<br />

scoop on what really happens after<br />

secondary school.<br />

Participate in workshops of your<br />

choice, find out about student life<br />

and check out the campus, including<br />

student accommodation. If you have<br />

any questions — university staff<br />

laser tag zapper Session A<br />

<strong>La</strong>sertag is a worldwide game where<br />

each player has a zapper and has to<br />

try to zap or tag the other players’<br />

zappers before being ‘shot’. You<br />

will solder your very own laser tag<br />

and after you’re done making your<br />

device, let the games begin! Make<br />

sure you bring your friends along so<br />

they can join the <strong>La</strong>sertag battle too.<br />

After the workshop you can keep<br />

your tag so the battles can continue<br />

long after the <strong>La</strong> <strong>Trobe</strong> workshop.<br />

Please note these devices are safe. They<br />

do not use lasers. Only Infrared (IR) LEDs<br />

are used for transmission.<br />

You will be modifying the source<br />

code of a real iPad application to<br />

change how it functions. You’ll<br />

be able to see the effects of the<br />

changes in real-time by deploying<br />

the application on an iPad. Some<br />

activities include modifying the<br />

output of the random number<br />

generator and changing images and<br />

sounds the application uses as it’s<br />

Prosthetics and Orthotics:<br />

Making a difference Session C<br />

This workshop will introduce<br />

the working environment of the<br />

profession of the Prosthetist/<br />

Orthotist (P&O). The course content<br />

will outline what prosthetics and<br />

orthotics is, what the P&O does,<br />

how to get into the <strong>program</strong>, course<br />

structure, and review the current<br />

activities of the undergraduate<br />

masters <strong>program</strong>.<br />

Psychology: What’s<br />

inside your head? <br />

Session B/C<br />

Come and find out about all the<br />

different things psychologists are<br />

interested in and how you can<br />

become a psychologist. You’ll<br />

learn psychology is much more<br />

than the diagnosis and treatment<br />

of psychological disorders, and it<br />

includes the study of personality,<br />

emotion, learning, memory,<br />

thinking, language and more. During<br />

this session you might even learn a<br />

little bit about what goes on inside<br />

your head!<br />

Social Work:<br />

You will make a difference<br />

<br />

Session B<br />

What is social work all about? Find<br />

out about the many opportunities<br />

available in this field and gain an<br />

understanding of what social work is<br />

all about. The workshop will outline<br />

the various roles performed by<br />

social work graduates and the many<br />

interesting career paths available.<br />

Participants will also get a chance<br />

to get a feel for the profession by<br />

taking part in various role play and<br />

situational activities.<br />

Speech Pathology and<br />

Occupational Therapy:<br />

Getting your head<br />

around recovery Session B/C<br />

<strong>Experience</strong> what is involved in<br />

assisting a patient to regain mobility<br />

after suffering severe head trauma<br />

or stroke — the workshop will cover<br />

occupational therapy strategies<br />

to aid recovery along with the<br />

implementation of <strong>program</strong>s to help<br />

the patient improve concentration,<br />

memory and communication skills<br />

during their recovery.<br />
