Iberian <strong>and</strong> Latin American<br />
<strong>Studies</strong>: Portuguese<br />
Studying Portuguese language as a Minor<br />
subject at 25% <strong>of</strong> your degree will help you<br />
to become highly pr<strong>of</strong>icient in writing, reading,<br />
speaking <strong>and</strong> listening to the language. It<br />
will also help you to underst<strong>and</strong> aspects<br />
<strong>of</strong> the society <strong>and</strong> culture <strong>of</strong> Portugal <strong>and</strong><br />
the Portuguese-speaking World. At the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Liverpool</strong>, Portuguese is taken<br />
as a beginners’ language. Portuguese is the<br />
seventh most widely spoken language in the<br />
world, spoken by over 200 million people in<br />
countries such as Portugal, Brazil, Angola,<br />
Mozambique <strong>and</strong> Cape Verde, as well as<br />
places such as Macau, East Timor <strong>and</strong> Goa.<br />
Students <strong>of</strong> Portuguese at <strong>Liverpool</strong> have the<br />
option <strong>of</strong> learning either the Brazilian or the<br />
European variants <strong>of</strong> the language, as well as<br />
the opportunity to explore the unique histories,<br />
societies <strong>and</strong> customs <strong>of</strong> the Portuguesespeaking<br />
world. Brazil’s booming economy,<br />
currently the sixth largest in the world, means<br />
that learning Portuguese can open doors<br />
to employment in a variety <strong>of</strong> areas including<br />
in virtually any sector including, increasingly,<br />
industry, tourism, teaching <strong>and</strong> translation.<br />
A mastery <strong>of</strong> this language brings with it<br />
access to cultural products including world<br />
literature <strong>and</strong> cinema, key debates in areas<br />
such as postcolonialism, culture <strong>and</strong> society.<br />
PROGRAMME CONTENT<br />
In the first year our vibrant <strong>and</strong> fast-moving<br />
course will quickly take you to A level st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />
during the course <strong>of</strong> your first year.<br />
In second <strong>and</strong> final year expert tuition in small<br />
groups will provide you with the opportunity<br />
to approximate near-native st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />
A year abroad is strongly encouraged<br />
though not compulsory.<br />
If you do opt to take the year abroad your<br />
time will be spent in a Portuguese-speaking<br />
country as an assistant in a school, as a<br />
student at a university or on a work placement.<br />
During this year, you will complete an extended<br />
essay in Portuguese or follow courses at<br />
your host university.<br />

<strong>Studies</strong>: Spanish<br />
Studying Spanish language as a Minor subject<br />
at 25% <strong>of</strong> your degree will help you to become<br />
highly pr<strong>of</strong>icient in writing, reading, speaking<br />
<strong>and</strong> listening to the language. It will also help<br />
you to underst<strong>and</strong> aspects <strong>of</strong> the society <strong>and</strong><br />
culture <strong>of</strong> Spain <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Spanish-speaking<br />
world. At the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Liverpool</strong>, Spanish<br />
may be taken from A level or as a beginners’<br />
language. Spanish is one <strong>of</strong> the world’s most<br />
important languages in terms <strong>of</strong> speaker<br />
numbers <strong>and</strong> global politics extending into<br />
the USA. Fluency in Spanish opens up dynamic<br />
<strong>and</strong> fast-changing parts <strong>of</strong> the world outside<br />
Europe, including North, Central <strong>and</strong> South<br />
America as well as the Caribbean. A mastery<br />
<strong>of</strong> this language brings with it not only access<br />
to cultural products including world literature<br />
<strong>and</strong> cinema, but also important social, cultural,<br />
historical <strong>and</strong> linguistic debates.<br />

level will both refresh <strong>and</strong> extend your knowledge<br />
<strong>of</strong> Spanish. If you are a beginner a fast moving<br />
course will quickly take you to A level st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />
during the course <strong>of</strong> your first year.<br />
In the second <strong>and</strong> final year, advanced students<br />
taking a Major in Business <strong>Studies</strong> will normally<br />
take specialist business language modules<br />
as their core language modules in Spanish.<br />
A year abroad is strongly encouraged though<br />

PROGRAMME CONTENT<br />
After two years studying Mathematics<br />
75% <strong>and</strong> a language 25%, you will be well<br />
prepared for the third year spent at a university<br />
abroad. There you will absorb the culture <strong>and</strong><br />
experience <strong>of</strong> living abroad <strong>and</strong> gain further<br />
fluency in the relevant language.<br />
The fourth year is spent back in <strong>Liverpool</strong><br />
Studying Mathematics <strong>and</strong> communication/<br />
translation skills.<br />
