places; a question board inviting your views on what makes your city unique, what makes
it a good place to live, etc; postcard from Liverpool - in which you can sketch your own
Where would you rather live? The Tower or the Terrace?
Strathcona Road, Wavertree VE <strong>Day</strong> 1945
How does a community exist within a tower?
What should be done with the vacant terraced housing stock in the city?
How should towers relate to the ground?
Should we concentrate on preservation of housing or new Eco builds?
All of these questions are relevant to life in Liverpool today.
With Peel’s plans to build new residential towers in Liverpool and the existing problem
of vacant terraced housing in the city, the diversity of our residential living is
highlighted, and its future called into question.
The workshop at the Bluecoat today invites you to participate in the debate.
How would you design terraces and towers <strong>for</strong> future Liverpool? Think, discuss,
and then model your ideas, using sustainable materials and group collaboration.
Towards a city-region mayor ?
Having campaigned <strong>for</strong> Liverpool to have a directly-elected Mayor, Liam Fogarty - runner-up in the city's first
mayoral election in 2012 - makes the case <strong>for</strong> a Mayor <strong>for</strong> Merseyside. He claims the current arrangements <strong>for</strong>
leading the City Region are undemocratic, opaque and ineffective.
1250 Andrea Nixon : Executive Director, Tate Liverpool
25 years of Tate Liverpool: Cultural regeneration in Liverpool past / present / future
Tate Liverpool was created in 1988: over 25 years has become a symbol of a cultural regeneration and inspired a
raft of new public galleries round the country. Since Capital of Culture in 2008, the whole cultural sector in
Liverpool has gained in local and national profile and confidence. Looking ahead, what is our collective ambition
<strong>for</strong> cultural regeneration in the city <strong>for</strong> the next 25 years - and how do we think this will be achieved?
1315 Jonathan Brown : Urban Planner with ShareTheCity.org, Parks & Suburban Heritage Champion
10 steps to heaven - 10 crazy plans <strong>for</strong> civic self improvement
Let's imagine making Liverpool perfect - What if our children could cycle down Scotland Road in safety? Catch a
cable car to the Pier Head from Everton Park? Trans<strong>for</strong>m unsightly shop shutters into canvases <strong>for</strong> great art?
Bring your own ideas - the bigger (and smaller) the better ...
1430 John Ashton CBE : Joint Director of Public Health <strong>for</strong> Cumbria Primary Care Trust
Healthy city living <strong>for</strong> the 21st century
Now that the city of Liverpool has survived the ‘80s and looks as if it's here to stay, how do we raise our game to
become a green, sustainable city that is fit <strong>for</strong> all ages to live in and flourish?
1500 John Hinchliffe : Former World Heritage Site Officer, Liverpool City Council
What future <strong>for</strong> Liverpool's historic waterfront?
What makes Liverpool's historic waterfront so special? What changes have taken place and which might take
place? Asking whether new development is needed and if so, whether it should be contemporary or traditional;
whether the waterfront is adequately protected and; whether a bespoke plan is required to guide its future.
1530 Steph Petrie : Honorary Senior Research Fellow, University of Liverpool
and a Liverpool resident and worker <strong>for</strong> 15 years, after 25 years in Hull.
A Tale of Two Cities
Comparing and contrasting Liverpool & Hull –
both ports, both Northern cities at opposite ends of the M62 and severely affected by the economic recession.
1600 Rob Burns : Urban Design and Heritage Manager, Liverpool City Council
Liverpool’s future design challenges
Designing to context - is there a Liverpool aesthetic? The poverty of expectation - what does quality mean?
Design costs - but poor design costs more.
Is there a correlation between quality design +successful regeneration?
