1966<br />
June 21 st An article was published in the Guild Gazette titled “Homosexuality –<br />
Perversion or just a social illness”.<br />
1967<br />
July 28 th<br />
10 years after the publication <strong>of</strong> the Wolfenden Report, the government<br />
legalised male homosexuality between consenting adults in England and<br />
Wales when the Sexual Offences Act (1967) received Royal Assent.<br />
This was limited to men over 21 years <strong>of</strong> age and did not include the<br />
Merchant Navy or the Armed Forces.<br />
1969<br />
- The Committee for Homosexual Equality (CHE) was formed in 1969 as<br />
the successor to the North West Homosexual Law Reform Committee.<br />
CHE became the first national organisation for gay legal reform. The<br />
word Committee was replaced with Campaign in 1971.<br />
June 28 th<br />
The Stonewall Inn in New York City was a bar with a mixed clientele<br />
including <strong>LGBT</strong> people. On the morning <strong>of</strong> the 28 th June the New York<br />
Police raided the bar resulting in 3 nights <strong>of</strong> rioting. The Stonewall Riots<br />
are regarded as the symbolic beginning <strong>of</strong> the gay liberation movement.<br />
