The interview takes about fi ve minutes, and contains questions about the number of days you are in town for NCHA events, and the things you purchase while you are here. The data collected from these surveys will assist us in utilizing new Texas legislation to grow our purses for the NCHA “Triple Crown” events. Scott Amos also marked 219, riding Little Shorty Pep for Walt and Louanna Burdette, Myton, Utah. shown her at the Futurity and the Super Stakes, but her first success came when Adolph showed her as reserve limited champion at the Colorado CHA Spring Aged Event. “Robert did a great job with her,” said Adolph. “She’s really well trained, but she’s just had some tough luck’ “She’s a powerful mare and has a lot of stop. She’s big, but she can turn inside out and that’s what makes her so neat. She’s got a lot of draw, but she can get there when she needs to.” Adolph and his wife, Lorraine, and year-old daughter, Mikala, live in Farmington, where Adolph and Greg Smith train for David Plummer, owner of Buffalo Ranch. Adolph, who grew up on a ranch in Colorado, got his start in cutting after he earned an associates degree in animal reproduction and went to work in Texas for trainer Sam Wilson. Wilson was hauling Bob Acre Doc for the NCHA World Championship that year and Adolph managed the stallion’s breeding program and began riding colts for Wilson. Over the years, Adolph has also worked for Lindy Burch, Tim Smith, Greg Ward, Tom McTaggart, and Gail and Linda Holmes. “I’ve been lucky to have been exposed to some really good trainers,” said Adolph. “When I worked for Gail and Linda Holmes, I got to ride with Lloyd Cox a lot. And I rode TR Dual Rey for about three months before he went to Lloyd’s.” In 2004, David Plummer purchased TR Dual Rey, who had been burning up the show circuit under Cox. “That horse is unbelievable,” said Adolph. “I was pretty excited when David bought him. In addition to TR Dual Rey, the Buffalo Ranch stallion roster includes Laredo Blue, Meradas Blue Sue, Pastels Smart Lena, Lenas Telesis, Lots Of Acres and Amando Pistolero, as well as an impressive broodmare band. “We’ve got a really good staff and it’s a beautiful facility,” said Adolph. “They didn’t hold anything back when they built it. It makes it easier for us. The better you can take care of the horses, the better they can take care of you.” The first go-round of Derby Open competition saw new leaders emerge and some former stars in the dust. Super Stakes champion One Time Pepto lost a cow at the buzzer yesterday; Quintan Blue, NCHA Futurity reserve champion, fell victim to a cow, as well. But NCHA Futurity champion Spots Hot scored 219.5 points under owner Wesley Galyean, deep in yesterday’s last bunch. And Rockin By Choice, NCHA Super Stakes reserve champion, ridden by Paul Hansma for Elizabeth Queen, comes back to the second round on a 218-point ticket.
