FREEDOM OF INFORMATION – JUNIOR DOCTOR ROTAS
I write in response to your request for information in relation to junior doctor rotas under the New
Deal. Please note that there are no trusts within the NHS in Scotland.
I have been provided with information to help answer your request by Ms Jackie Houston,
Head of Employee Relations - Medical and Dental, NHS Lothian.
Question:-
1. How many junior doctors (doctors in training) do you currently employ in your Trust/ Health
Board?
Answer:-
There are currently 854.93 whole time equivalent junior doctors within NHS Lothian.

2. How many monitoring exercises of junior doctors’ rotas under the New Deal have the hospitals
in your Trust/Health Board undertaken since August 2009 to the date of this email request
(1 st February, 2013)?
Answer:-
Since August 2009 there have been 1,006 monitoring exercises undertaken.

Answer:-
Re-enforcement of the Compensatory Rest Policy. Revision of the rota template with shorter
shift lengths/reduced post-call day to ensure rota is more robust.
