Pediatric SANE Training
3-Day Preparation Program for the SANE-P Certification
Wednesday, Thursday & Friday September 30, October 1 & 2, 2009

Description: A team approach is necessary for a victim centered response to pediatric sexual
assault. Therefore, this course will describe the role and function of each member of a pediatric
sexual assault response team including the role of child sexual abuse specialists. Emphasis will be
placed upon the role of the forensic examiner in the immediate aftermath of the crime. Protocols
and procedures for forensic examiners will be described and discussed. This course is a three
day comprehensive course designed for health care professionals. At the completion of this
course, each participant will be able to assess, evaluate and examine pediatric victims of sexual
assault in the immediate aftermath of the crime. Course content will include evidence collection,
documentation, referrals, and testimony. A skills station for photography and colposcopy will
be included in the course. In keeping with IAFN standards, this course prepares participants for
the SANE-P examination.
Target Audience: The course is open to nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, physicians
and physician assistants. It is beneficial, but not mandatory, that the participant complete an
adult sexual assault forensic examiner training prior to this course.

SANE-P Certification
The SANE-P credential is currently offered as a professional certification for sexual assault nurse
examiners that care for the pediatric and adolescent populations. SANE-P is the earned credential
which recognizes that the highest standards of forensic nursing for sexual assault nurse examiners
has been achieved. You can become certified by successfully completing the SANE-P examination.
Earning certification demonstrates professional commitment, a key capacity of leadership. Nurses who
take the extra step to become certified in their specialty document their commitment to quality care.
Specialty certification is increasingly becoming an essential nursing credential.
SANE-A Certification
The SANE-A credential is currently offered as a professional certification for sexual assault nurse
examiners of adults and adolescents’. SANE-A is the earned credential which recognizes that the
highest standards of forensic nursing for sexual assault nurse examiners have been achieved. You can
become certified by successfully completing the SANE-A examination. Re-certification is available
by examination on continuing education. Nurses with SANE-A after their name are Board-Certified
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners-Adult/Adolescent. Earning certification demonstrates professional
commitment, a key capacity of leadership. Nurses who take the extra step to become certified in their
specialty document their commitment to quality care. Specialty certification is increasingly becoming
an essential nursing credential.
Becoming Board-Certified is a statement that the nurse has accepted the challenge of preparing for
and passing a rigorous examination demonstrating refined knowledge and critical thinking skills.
Recertification ensures that the SANE-A’s body of knowledge continues to be on the leading edge of
the specialty practice.

SANE - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training Program
5-Day Preparation Program for the SANE-A Certification
Monday – Friday November 16-20, 2009
Description: This 5-day intensive course, offered by the University of Pennsylvania School
of Nursing since 1993, will provide the professional nurse who is interested in practicing
as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) with the knowledge and skills necessary to
independently examine the female and male adult victim of rape and sexual assault. The
International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) determined educational criteria for SANE
education. In keeping with IAFN standards, the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing
has expanded both the content and the hours of our SANE program to prepare nurses for
SANE-A examination.
Target Audience: An intensive course for individuals who practice in emergency departments,
hospital-based and/or clinic based programs that specialize in the care and treatment of rape and
sexual assault victims, and designated comprehensive rape and sexual assault treatment centers.
This course is open to nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, physicians & physician
assistants.
Content: Each participant will receive in-depth orientation to the physical, emotional and social
reactions to rape and sexual assault. In addition, each participant will have the opportunity
to perform a standard evidentiary physical evaluation and examination (experience provided
through the use of surrogates) and collect forensic evidence.

Ann W. Burgess, DNSc, FAAN, Professor, Boston College School of Nursing. Dr. Burgess has been
principal investigator on 12 funded research projects and has co-authored 21 books and over 135 articles
on crime victims and their offenders. She also severs as an expert witness in criminal and civil cases and
has testified before congressional committees and served on the U.S. Attorney General’s Task Force on
Family Violence.
Kathleen Brown, PhD, RN, Practice Professor, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Dr. Brown
has been the director the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training Program since 1994. Dr. Brown has
testified throughout Pennsylvania and has published her research on domestic violence, forensic interview
and evidence collection.
