SANE - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training Program
5-Day Preparation Program for the SANE-A Certification
Monday – Friday November 16-20, 2009
Description: This 5-day intensive course, offered by the University of Pennsylvania School
of Nursing since 1993, will provide the professional nurse who is interested in practicing
as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) with the knowledge and skills necessary to
independently examine the female and male adult victim of rape and sexual assault. The
International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) determined educational criteria for SANE
education. In keeping with IAFN standards, the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing
has expanded both the content and the hours of our SANE program to prepare nurses for
SANE-A examination.
Target Audience: An intensive course for individuals who practice in emergency departments,
hospital-based and/or clinic based programs that specialize in the care and treatment of rape and
sexual assault victims, and designated comprehensive rape and sexual assault treatment centers.
This course is open to nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, physicians & physician
assistants.
Content: Each participant will receive in-depth orientation to the physical, emotional and social
reactions to rape and sexual assault. In addition, each participant will have the opportunity
to perform a standard evidentiary physical evaluation and examination (experience provided
through the use of surrogates) and collect forensic evidence.

accredited nursing contact hour credits, and certificate of course completion. Lunch is on your

Accreditation: The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing Center for Professional
Development is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American
Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Faculty:
Ann W. Burgess, DNSc, FAAN, Professor, Boston College School of Nursing. Dr. Burgess has been
principal investigator on 12 funded research projects and has co-authored 21 books and over 135 articles
on crime victims and their offenders. She also severs as an expert witness in criminal and civil cases and
has testified before congressional committees and served on the U.S. Attorney General’s Task Force on
Family Violence.
Kathleen Brown, PhD, RN, Practice Professor, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Dr. Brown
has been the director the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training Program since 1994. Dr. Brown has
testified throughout Pennsylvania and has published her research on domestic violence, forensic interview
and evidence collection.

Time: Overall 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM -Sign-in 8:00 AM
Fee: The program fee of $359 includes attendance at the program, continental breakfast, program
materials and ANCC accredited nursing contact hour credits. Lunch is on your own.
ADULT SANE:
Day & Date: Monday - Friday November 16-20, 2009
Time: Overall 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM -Sign-in 7:30 AM

nursing contact hour credits, and certificate of course completion. Lunch is on your own.
INDIVIDUAL DISCOUNTS: A 15% discount is offered to SON Faculty, Alumni, Full-time Students & the University
of Pennsylvania Health System, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia VA Nursing Staff.
GROUP DISCOUNT: A 15% discount is available for same organization groups of three or more if
registration is submitted at one time.
CANCELLATIONS: Notification must be received in writing one week prior to a program for a full refund.
Cancellations within the week will be assessed a $ 50 fee. Refunds will not be issued 48 hours prior to
a program or once the program has begun.
DISABILITY: If you need special accommodations due to disability, a 2-week notification would be appreciated.
PROGRAM CANCELLATION & SUBSTITUTIONS: We reserve the right to cancel a program/course if low
enrollment or circumstances beyond our control hinders its success. In the event of a cancellation, all
registered participants would be notified and a full refund would be issued. Although rarely necessary, we
reserve the right to substitute faculty if needed.
TAPING & DUPLICATING HANDOUTS: Audio and/or Video taping of CE programs/courses, as well as
copying speaker handouts are prohibited.

Development is accredited as a provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the
American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission of Accreditation.
Pediatric SANE 3 day course awarded 20.5 Contact Hours.
Adult SANE 5 day course has been awarded 40.0 Contact Hours.
