• A cross-disciplinary team led by Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Tan Kok Kiong (Engineering) and Adjunct Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Ng Soon Chye (Medicine), working with Embryonics<br />

International, has developed an automated micro<br />

manipulator for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection.<br />

Their technology is based on a piezo actuator which<br />

enables controlled and precise injection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sperm<br />

into <strong>the</strong> egg. The team’s work won <strong>the</strong> First Prize and<br />

Innovative Award in <strong>the</strong> TechSource Singapore<br />

Engineering Design Challenge 2005.<br />

• Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Chia Boon Lock (Medicine) received <strong>the</strong><br />

Lee-Foundation-NHG Lifetime Achievement Award<br />

2005 for his significant lifetime contributions to<br />

healthcare in Singapore.<br />

• Echoes <strong>of</strong> Fall by Dr Ho Chee Kong (Music)<br />

premiered at <strong>the</strong> Japan-Singapore International<br />

Exchange Composers Concert in Tokyo’s Suntory Hall.<br />

• Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Tan Kay Chuan and<br />

Ms Nachimuthu Sangeetha (Engineering) won <strong>the</strong><br />

Best Paper Award at <strong>the</strong> 3 rd Asian Network for<br />

Quality Congress and <strong>the</strong> 19 th Asia Quality<br />

Symposium by Chinese Society for Quality, Taipei.<br />

• The Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific received <strong>the</strong><br />

Best Education Course Provider award for <strong>the</strong> fourth<br />

consecutive year at <strong>the</strong> <strong>2006</strong> Asian Freight and<br />

Supply Chain Awards ceremony.<br />

• At <strong>the</strong> MIS Asia IT Excellence Awards 2005, <strong>the</strong><br />

Centre for Instructional Technology was<br />

adjudged <strong>the</strong> Best Business Enabler (Education) for<br />

<strong>NUS</strong>cast.<br />

<strong>State</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>2006</strong><br />

• The Computer Centre’s TCG@<strong>NUS</strong> (Tera-scale<br />

Campus Grid at <strong>NUS</strong>) clinched <strong>the</strong> CIO Award <strong>2006</strong>,<br />

beating more than 100 nominations from <strong>the</strong> public<br />

and private sectors in <strong>the</strong> region. TCG@<strong>NUS</strong> is a PC<br />

Grid project that harnesses <strong>the</strong> idle compute cycles <strong>of</strong><br />

campus PCs to create a virtual computer with<br />

tremendous computational power, maximizing <strong>the</strong><br />

return <strong>of</strong> investment as well as significantly reducing<br />

<strong>the</strong> turnaround time <strong>of</strong> large scale research<br />

computation and promoting research collaboration.
