Extra hours will be expected as necessary to carry out the requirements<br />

<strong>2.</strong> <strong>Purpose</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Job</strong><br />

• To develop and champion strong students’ unions<br />

• To advise/input into the organisation’s strategy for HE students’ union<br />

development and to be responsible for the implementation <strong>of</strong> that strategy<br />

nationally<br />

<strong>3.</strong> <strong>Main</strong> <strong>Duties</strong> and Responsibilities<br />

• To be the organisation’s main contact in all aspects relating to HE students’<br />

union development.<br />

• To provide organisational expertise in areas around the Governance, democratic<br />

and legal status <strong>of</strong> students’ unions.<br />

• To support the NEC in the delivery <strong>of</strong> campaigns relevant to the post<br />

4. Responsibility for Resources<br />

Be responsible for financial budgets and any physical resources (including <strong>of</strong>fices,<br />

furniture, equipment and IT) allocated to the post, including:<br />

• Ensuring that any equipment allocated to or purchased by the post is<br />

maintained in good order and ensure health and safety standards are<br />

maintained in accordance with legislation and NUS procedure.<br />

5. <strong>Job</strong> Activities<br />

<strong>Job</strong> activities will be conducted within the relevant NUS Office, but the post holder will<br />

also be required to visit NUS HQ and other NUS <strong>of</strong>fices and external venues throughout<br />

the UK. The post holder may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends<br />

to carry out duties.<br />

5.1 To be the organisation’s main contact in all aspects relating to HE students’ union<br />

development.<br />

To provide organisational expertise in areas around the Governance, democratic<br />

and legal status <strong>of</strong> students’ unions.<br />

• Coordinate a range <strong>of</strong> projects and initiatives designed to improve the<br />

capacity <strong>of</strong> local capacity <strong>of</strong> students’ unions to deliver for their members<br />

• Carry out and/or commission research into HE students’ unions to assist<br />

unions to grow<br />

• Coordinate a central bank <strong>of</strong> expertise and resources<br />

• Liaise with relevant external bodies<br />

• Coordinate a networking strategy for students’ union <strong>of</strong>ficers staff and<br />

activists<br />

Work with regional teams to:<br />

• Identify needs and priorities for development within students’ unions.<br />

• Undertake research to identify best practice in relevant areas.<br />

• Create materials and tools to support development and identify best<br />

medium for distribution.<br />

• Create models and guidelines that support the development process.<br />

• In conjunction with the web team, to maintain a web-based resource section<br />

<strong>of</strong> appropriate materials for students’ union <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />

• Advise and support the NEC in matters relating to union development.<br />

• Promote participation and involvement strategies with students’ unions.<br />

• Deal with general enquiries relating to Governance, constitutions,<br />

procedures and the legal aspects <strong>of</strong> students’ union organisation.<br />

• Provide advice and support to individual students’ unions.<br />

• Identify and promote best practice and ensure that students’ unions are<br />

kept up to date with changes in terms <strong>of</strong> legal issues affecting them.<br />

General<br />

• <strong>Main</strong>tain and ensure a high standard <strong>of</strong> customer care in all NUS activities<br />

• Carry out all relevant activities required for the success <strong>of</strong> NUS.<br />

• To use IT applications (word processing, email etc) to service the posts<br />

administrative needs.<br />

• To be a member <strong>of</strong> the Directorate Team and ensuring their delivery <strong>of</strong><br />

objectives.<br />

• To work towards the achievement <strong>of</strong> organisational goals and quality standards<br />

• To lead, develop and ensure delivery <strong>of</strong> organisational projects and programmes<br />

as required<br />

• To consistently promote NUS in all activities and at all forums relevant to the<br />

role,<br />

• Any other duties analogous with the post as determined from time to time.<br />

• To undertake any travel that may be necessary<br />

Additional<br />

The post holder may be required to perform other duties analogous to the post, and to<br />

carry out duties on behalf <strong>of</strong> NUS where specialist skills or knowledge apply.<br />

• To remain conversant with and aware <strong>of</strong> developments within NUS's work.<br />

• To attend training events and Annual Conference as required.<br />

• To ensure that strict confidentiality is maintained where required.<br />

• To promote the NUS with discretion.<br />

Qualifications & Experience<br />

• A relevant degree or pr<strong>of</strong>essional qualification or equivalent experience<br />

• Experience <strong>of</strong> successfully leading and delivering outcomes in a comparable role<br />

within an organisation <strong>of</strong> comparable scope and complexity<br />

• Evidence <strong>of</strong> success in brokering cross sector collaborative working relationships<br />

and building partnerships to achieve results;<br />

• Experience <strong>of</strong> delivering results; developing and leading a high performing,<br />

• Experience in the effective implementation <strong>of</strong> development initiatives in a<br />

democratic context.<br />

• Successful experience <strong>of</strong> working with partners to support effective<br />

organisational or service improvement within a national or regional framework<br />

• Experience <strong>of</strong> managing/supervising others<br />
