NOVASIGHTINGS
The Medical Education Campus Visit to the General Assembly
Thirty-five students, faculty and
staff from the Medical Education
Campus (MEC) recently took a trip
to Richmond to meet with Virginia
General Assembly delegates and
senators. The purpose of the meeting
was for students to meet with
legislators to advocate preserving
state funding for Virginia community
colleges through affordability,
access, workforce training and jobs.
Legislators from the General Assembly
heard from MEC students
and learned who they were, what
programs of study and professions
they were pursuing, what continuing
education meant to them and
what plans they have after graduation.
Students were especially honored
when they were able to pin the
delegate or senator, who they were
visiting, with a NOVA lapel pin.
Amongst those faculty and staff
in attendance: Provost Brian Foley,
Dean of Allied Health Andy Cornell,
Dean of Student Services Beatrice
Veney, Program Manager of
Faculty, staff and students pose for a picture while visiting Virginia's General
Assembly in Richmond.
NOVA Healthforce Gerry Hofler, Coordinator of Student Activities Patricia Martin-Mattocks and Respiratory
Therapy Program faculty Rosary Ossorio. Director of Government Affairs and Community Relations
Dana Kauffman and NOVA Board Chair Greg Schuckman were also in attendance.
of our students and faculty. The series is open to the public and is sponsored by the Business Technologies Division,
NOVA‐Alexandria.
An Introduction to Scientific Notebook
(with possible side excursions into related technology)
by Dr. Don Goral, Professor, Department of Mathematics
NOVA-Annandale and Extended Learning Institute
Dr. Goral will overview this mathematics software, showing what sort of problems it can handle and how it can be
used by both student and professor. After a brief overview, he will tailor the remainder of the presentation to the interests
of the audience. Think about these questions:
How could such software help me, as either a student or a teacher?
Here are some math problems I have. Is Scientific Notebook relevant? If so, how?
How does Scientific Notebook compare to other math software, such as Mathematica ?
About the Speaker. Dr. Goral (dgoral@nvcc.edu, http://www.nvcc.edu/home/dgoral) received a B.S. in mathematics
from the California Institute of Technology (1968), an M.A. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin at
Madison (1972), and an M.A. and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of California at Berkeley (1978 and 1986
respectively). During 1990-1995, he took graduate mathematics courses from George Mason University and the
University of Maryland at College Park.
He was drafted out of graduate school in 1969, trained in the Vietnamese language and as an interrogator, and served
in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, 1970-1971. He taught English in Thailand from 1980 to 1985 and in the People's Republic
of China in 1986. He has taught mathematics at NOVA since 1988, and uses Scientific Notebook for both
online and campus math classes.
About Scientific Notebook. Used for mathematical word processing and computer algebra, Scientific Notebook is
produced by MacKichan Software Inc. (http://www.mackichan.com).
