PEOPLE & PLACES First Aiders are first... On a regular basis around the country there are stories of Cadets saving lives through the First Aid skills that they have been taught while training. To test their knowledge, 42 (NW) Bde runs an annual comprehensive Cadet First Aid Competition. This year it was held over two days at Halton Training Camp. The event is administered by Col Garry Joynes and the team of examiners were from the St John Ambulance to make it independent and fair. With their ‘make up artist’, he produced very realistic injuries on a group of volunteer cadets from Merseyside ACF. The teams competing were from Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester. Merseyside ACF ‘A’ Team were the winners by a large margin and their ‘B’ team were runners up. Col Joynes presented the trophies including the CCF Trophy that went to Oldham Hulme Grammar School. Merseyside ACF ‘A’ Team will now go forward to the National Championship at Sandhurst. Widnes Cadet takes top job Col Alex making his presentation to the Honorary Colonel GUNNERS’ SUMMER BALL Lord Derby’s historic Knowsley Hall was the venue for the 103 Regt RA (V) Summer Ball and the dining out of their CO Lt Col Alex Forbes. Accompanying him was his wife Lindsey. After the initial reception the Volunteer Band played a number of pieces with the beautiful setting of the gardens behind them. These gardens, 97 years ago, witnessed the newly formed Liverpool Pals Battalions undergoing training before going to the front in the Great War. The couple were then piped in for the dinner and at the conclusion Col Alan Jolley, the Honorary Colonel, gave a speech and a number of presentations were made. There was a surprise as Lt Richard Wilkinson proposed to his girlfriend, Marietta Gallagher, and after her initial shock she said “yes.” The evening concluded with dancing. Cdt RSM Andrews is presented with his rank by Comdt Cheshire ACF, Col Ian Holmes. Seventeen-year-old Widnes Army Cadet, William Andrews has been appointed to the most senior role that a cadet may hold within the ACF, that of Cdt RSM. The appointment followed a stringent application process for which William required firstly the approval of his OC, followed by an interview with the Comdt and a written submission. The most important of William’s duties is to be a role model to his peers and in this respect he has excelled having attained his Master Cadet and level 2 Institute of Leadership and Management Cadet Vocational Qualification Organisation award, as well as being a member of the County Shooting Team. William is currently studying at Carmel College, St Helens and is looking toward a career in film or the media. He said: “I am very excited by the opportunities that this role will afford me, and I am determined to take a proactive leadership style.” 8 THE VOLUNTEER www.nwrfca.org.uk
