Chamberlain and Lyman Brown Papers Box/Folder Description _ Sub-series 1 – Contracts, 1911 – 1958 and undated 1.5 boxes Arrangement: Alphabetical Included in this series are stock agreements and Actors’ Equity Association contracts for productions other than those listed in Productions series, or for those individuals who do not have a folder in the General Correspondence files. Representation agreements can also be found here, as well notes from actors promising to pay commissions to Chamberlain Brown if hired. Of particular interest are contracts for Eddie Bracken, Nancy Davis, Buster Keaton, Sheldon Leonard, Mildred Natwick, and William Tilden II. Sub-series 2 – Commission Records, 1920 – 1933 and undated 9 boxes Arrangement: Cards are Alphabetical; Sheets are Chronological This series contains client commission cards and sheets kept by the agency. The cards are filed by the client’s name and include cards for numerous performers such as James Cagney, Clark and McCullough, Georgette Cohan, Claudette Colbert, Elisha Cook, Jr., William Frawley, Clark Gable, Helen Gahagan, Jules [sic] Garfield, Dorothy Gish, Lucille Lortel, Claire Boothe Luce, Alfred Lunt, Clifford Odets, Thelma Ritter, Cesar Romero, Rosalind Russell, Fritzi Scheff, Sylvia Sidney, Barbara Stanwyck, Norma Terris, Spencer Tracy, Gertrude Vanderbilt, Cora Witherspoon, and Peggy Wood. Of special note is the card for Marjorie Main with the note “Bad debt. Did not get p<strong>aid</strong>.” Sub-series 3 – Loose Financial Records, 1933 – 1934 3 boxes Arrangement: Chronological by Theater This series consists of weekly settlements and checks for the Chamberlain Brown Players’ summer engagements at (Nixon’s) Apollo Theatre (1933) and at the Earle Theatre (1934.) Sub-series 4 – General, 1899 – 1961 and undated 7 boxes Arrangement: Alphabetical This series includes bank statements, checks, correspondence, cards, ledger sheets, statements, salary lists, and office rents. There are legal documents and correspondence relating to the many lawsuits filed by vendors, bars, restaurants, 3
Chamberlain and Lyman Brown Papers Box/Folder Description _ venues, and utilities against Chamberlain Brown for collection of funds due, as well as for his 1934 bankruptcy declaration. Rent was always a problem and the files are filled with correspondence regarding unp<strong>aid</strong> rent, dunning notices, and legal actions by the various realty companies. There is also correspondence in 1951 with Century Pawnbrokers, where Chamberlain Brown pawned a typewriter and wristwatch. The Brown brothers received bequests from their father’s (George McDuffee Brown) estate and from their paternal aunts— Anne Brown Leacock (Aunt Nan) and Emma Brown Lyman (Aunt Kittie) both in their lifetimes and after their deaths. The papers include estate correspondence, wills, and trust statements. Two handwritten informal “wills” by Chamberlain and Lyman Brown in 1933 and 1938 are also contained in this series. Series VI: Office Files, ca. 1908 – 1961 and undated 8.75 boxes Included in this series are contact cards for performers and stage managers, stock theater schedules, bulletins, and notes by Lyman Brown, and administrative office files. Sub-series 1 – Contact Cards Sub-series 2 - Stock Theaters Sub-series 3 – General Sub-series 1 – Contact Cards, ca. 1923 – 1955 and undated 3 index card boxes Arrangement: Alphabetical This series consists of mostly undated Contact Cards. Cards sometimes include clippings about the performer, credits, and descriptions. The files are on index cards, but are also sometimes on slips of paper. Some performers have more than one card and occasionally there is a small photo. There are cards for Tad Mosel, Zero Mostel, Jules Munshin, Jan Murray, and Henny Youngman, with handwritten names and addresses on the card, although there is no evidence the Brown agency represented these performers. A separate file exists for stage managers, but only for the letters “A” and “B.” Sub-series 2 – Stock Theaters, ca. 1908 – 1961 and undated 2.75 boxes Arrangement: By Format This series contains bulletins and schedules published by the major stock play publishers such as American Play Company, Century Play Company, and 4
