Sub-series 1 – Contracts, 1911 – 1958 and undated<br />

Arrangement: Alphabetical<br />

Included in this series are stock agreements and Actors’ Equity Association<br />

contracts for productions other than those listed in Productions series, or for those<br />

individuals who do not have a folder in the General Correspondence files.<br />

Representation agreements can also be found here, as well notes from actors<br />

promising to pay commissions to Chamberlain Brown if hired. Of particular<br />

interest are contracts for Eddie Bracken, Nancy Davis, Buster Keaton, Sheldon<br />

Leonard, Mildred Natwick, and William Tilden II.<br />

Sub-series 2 – Commission Records, 1920 – 1933 and undated<br />

Arrangement: Cards are Alphabetical; Sheets are Chronological<br />

This series contains client commission cards and sheets kept by the agency. The<br />

cards are filed by the client’s name and include cards for numerous performers<br />

such as James Cagney, Clark and McCullough, Georgette Cohan, Claudette<br />

Colbert, Elisha Cook, Jr., William Frawley, Clark Gable, Helen Gahagan, Jules<br />

[sic] Garfield, Dorothy Gish, Lucille Lortel, Claire Boothe Luce, Alfred Lunt,<br />

Clifford Odets, Thelma Ritter, Cesar Romero, Rosalind Russell, Fritzi Scheff,<br />

Sylvia Sidney, Barbara Stanwyck, Norma Terris, Spencer Tracy, Gertrude<br />

Vanderbilt, Cora Witherspoon, and Peggy Wood. Of special note is the<br />

card for Marjorie Main with the note “Bad debt. Did not get p<strong>aid</strong>.”<br />

Sub-series 3 – Loose Financial Records, 1933 – 1934<br />

Arrangement: Chronological by Theater<br />

This series consists of weekly settlements and checks for the Chamberlain Brown<br />

Players’ summer engagements at (Nixon’s) Apollo Theatre (1933) and at the<br />

Earle Theatre (1934.)<br />

Sub-series 4 – General, 1899 – 1961 and undated<br />

Arrangement: Alphabetical<br />

This series includes bank statements, checks, correspondence, cards, ledger<br />

sheets, statements, salary lists, and office rents. There are legal documents and<br />

correspondence relating to the many lawsuits filed by vendors, bars, restaurants,<br />
