Chamberlain and Lyman Brown Papers Legal and financial papers document the ever-present financial difficulties that beset the Brown brothers. Some personal and family papers and photographs can also be found in the collection. Organization They are: The collection is organized into eleven series and twenty-four sub-series. Chamberlain and Lyman Brown Papers Sub-series 3 – General Series IX: Series X: Series XI: Clippings Scrapbooks Oversized Series Descriptions Series I: Personal and Family Papers, 1849 – 1960 and undated 5.5 boxes This series contains correspondence to and from the Brown and Chamberlain families, as well as some family documents. There are also personal records belonging to Chamberlain and Lyman Brown. Sub-series 1 – Family Correspondence, 1887 – 1959 and undated Sub-series 2 – General, 1849 – 1960 and undated Sub-series 1 – Family Correspondence, 1887 – 1959 and undated 3 boxes Arrangement: Alphabetical This series consists of correspondence between the Brown brothers themselves, to and from their father, George McDuffee Brown, and especially from their aunts, Emma Brown Lyman (Aunt Kittie) and Ann Brown Leacock (Aunt Nan), who assisted the brothers financially throughout their lives. There is also correspondence with several other Brown family members. A number of letters (ca. 1933 or 1934) from Lyman to Chamberlain relate the travails of a stock company they ran in Atlantic City. Of particular interest is a handwritten note from the brothers’ maternal grandfather, General Samuel Emery Chamberlain, to Chamberlain Brown and his parents. This series also includes condolence letters to Lyman on Chamberlain’s death. 8
