In our obituary column will be found recorded of a very old Auckland Colonist namely Mr George Strong, at the age of 71. He arrived in the ship<br />

“Anne” 1848 and subsequently served in the Pilot Service and Customs during the Maori War, served in the Auckland Coast Guards. Mr Strong<br />

was for many years a waterman at the old Wynyard Pier and was for 15 years caretaker of the City Saltwater Baths. He was a Freemason and<br />

belong to Ara Lodge. Deceased leaves a widow, one daughter and seven sons.<br />

Another of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>’s earliest pioneers has just passed away at Auckland in the person of Mrs Margaret Strong. The deceased lady, who was<br />

86 years of age, arrived in Auckland in the early ‘forties. Her husband, whom she survived by about sixteen years, was an officer in the First Coast<br />

Guards, and saw troublous times in the Maori war.<br />

An old identity of Auckland passed away last week in the person of Mr Alfred Smith Fulljames, who died suddenly at the residence of his son,<br />

Owen’s-road, Devonport. Mr Fulljames arrived in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> in 1859 by the ship ‘Tornado’, and resided in Auckland and Devonport up to the<br />

time of his death. He leaves a family of three sons and three daughters and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.<br />

Evening Post 07 Sep 1925 Loss of Ripple – Officer’s widow seeks compensation – Special Jury ordered<br />

A request for the rescission of an order of Mr Justice Alpers, refusing a special juty in the case of the claim of Maud Ellen Nicholson, widow of<br />

Thomas Matthew Nicholson, for £1500 in respect of the death of her husband, who was lost in the steamer Ripple, of which he was chief officer,<br />

on 6 th August 1924, was made to the Full Court, consisting of their Honours Mr Justice MacGregor and Ostler, this morning by Richardson and<br />

Co., Ltd. Mr G. G. Watson appeared for Richardson and Co., Ltd., and Mr P. J. O’Regan for Mrs Nicholson. His Honour Mr Justice MacGregor,<br />

granting the request on behalf of the Court, said that it seemed a case in which a special jury should be allowed. Action, or default of action,<br />

causing the husband’s death was alleged. The boat was alleged to have been allowed to leave Wellington in circumstances which made it unsafe<br />

to leave the harbour in bad weather. “There is no allegation that the ship was overloaded,” said his Honour, “but there are allegations in regard to<br />

the way in which the cargo was stowed, both below and on deck, that it caused a list, and that the deck cargo was shipped correct the list. There is<br />

also the suggestion that the ship should not have been allowed to leave the harbour in such heavy weather. Mr O’Regan says he will have to call<br />

waterside workers and the Government Meteorologist.” His Honour Mr Justice Ostler agreed, remarking that the evidence would be of a highly<br />

technical nature.<br />

Eltham Argus December 1927<br />

A pretty wedding was solemnised at All Saint’s Church this afternoon, by the Rev C. H. Isaacson, when Ada Belle Jenkins of Eltham was united in<br />

the bonds of matrimony to Reginald Charles Pearce, of Auckland, on 14 December 1927. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a<br />

dainty period frock of shell pink satin beaute and georgette, trimmed with silver leaves and flowers and a large pink spray on the shoulder. She<br />

wore stockings to tone and silver shoes, while she carried a bouquet of carnations, sweet peas and maiden hair fern, with pink streamers. The<br />

bridesmaids, Misses Vera Sanderson and Evie Way, both of <strong>New</strong> Plymouth, wore turquoise blue georgette, trimmed with feathered taffeta and<br />

finished with a pink spray on the shoulder. The bridegroom was attended by Mr C. Carlson as best man and Mr R. Burke as groomsman. The<br />

reception was held at Mr Bocock’s tearooms. Mrs Jenkins, mother of the bride received the guests in a frock of black silk marocain with oriental<br />

trimmings and a coat of black satin and a black crinoline had with satin ribbon and flowers. Mr and Mrs Pearce left by car on a tour of the North<br />

Island, and will reside in Auckland.<br />
