RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE METRIC SYSTEM<br />

The following resolution was adopted by the Board of Directors of the American<br />

Orthotic <strong>and</strong> Prosthetic Association at its meeting in San Diego October 3, 1973:<br />

WHEREAS by Act of Congress it has been determined that the United<br />

States should proceed towards adoption of the metric system as used<br />

almost universally throughout the rest of the world, <strong>and</strong><br />

WHEREAS the technological professions <strong>and</strong> many segments of the<br />

health professions have commonly used the metric system over an extended<br />

period of time, <strong>and</strong><br />

WHFREAS it is important for members of the orthotic/prosthetic professions<br />

to interact with their colleagues in the medical <strong>and</strong> technological<br />

communities for optimum patient service be it hereby<br />

RESOLVED that the American Orthotic <strong>and</strong> Prosthetic Association<br />

endorses the use of the metric system by its members <strong>and</strong> other orthotic<br />

<strong>and</strong> prosthetic practitioners in the United States, <strong>and</strong> in witness of this<br />

endorsement <strong>and</strong> Association urges the editors of its journal <strong>Orthotics</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Prosthetics</strong> to commence the dual reporting of weights <strong>and</strong><br />

measurements in both the English <strong>and</strong> metric systems at the earliest<br />

possible date with the objective of employing the metric system solely<br />

by the time of the 29th Volume in 1975.
