As Mrs Butcher retires from
teaching, we’ve produced a special
edition newsletter dedicated to her
with our love and thanks.
Dear Students, Parents, Carers and Staff,
Oasis Academy Coulsdon is a very special family. We expect
that all our staff will care for all our students like they were their
own children. We expect them to show great dedication and
commitment to ‘doing whatever it takes’ to transform lives. We
are committed to the long haul, and to lasting impact. No
teacher, or staff member I have ever encountered embodies this
in the way that Jenny Butcher does. Jenny qualified as a
teacher in 1972, before I was even born! She has spent her
entire career serving the students and young people of
Croydon. Twenty-six years after joining the school, in the guise
of Taunton Manor, Jenny is currently a Business Studies
teacher, and Assistant Director of Sixth Form, Jenny is also responsible for Careers Guidance,
work experience and our Global links, including our charity work with Jacob’s Well. For many
years Jenny has also been involved with Young Enterprise, and her students regularly feature
in the winning teams. Over the years she has been a teacher of Home Economics and
Textiles, Head of Year, and Head of Business Studies.
In 1994 the school became Coulsdon High School and with Jenny’s help and expertise, the
school gained Technology College Status. In 2004 Jenny was named ‘UK Teacher of the Year’
and received an award from the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NfTE) for
her inspirational teaching of business and entrepreneurship.
Over her long career, Jenny has taught, advised, motivated, inspired and guided literally
thousands of young people. In fact, many parents visiting the school now recognise and
remember ‘Mrs Butcher’ teaching them.
I am very sorry that Jenny is retiring, she
will be sorely missed. She leaves us, and
the profession a better place for her
knowledge and enthusiasm, her support
and guidance to colleagues, and her
commitment and dedication to the Academy
and its students. I wish her a long and happy
retirement and know you all will too.
When Jenny started her teaching career, the World Wide Web hadn’t
been invented! It wasn’t until 1979 that Tim Berners Lee developed
ENQUIRE, the first personal database of people and software models.
I cannot believe that I’m
writing this or that the day
has finally arrived when I’ll
be retiring from teaching.
This school has been part
of my life for 26 years and
so it will be really strange
not to have lessons to prepare
or marking to do after
half term.
I started teaching in Croydon in 1972 and last year
met the granddaughter of one of my very first
students when she was looking around the
Academy as a possible place for her to come in
September! That really made me feel old!
I have been part of all the changes, the ‘ups and
downs’, the celebrations and the difficulties that
have made the school what it is today. I’ve had
some brilliant times and some sad times as anyone
would but I’ve been able to spend my time with
great colleagues, some wonderful students and
some dear friends.
I’m lucky enough to be in good health and so want
to start a new chapter in my life before I get too elderly.
I plan to travel, especially to see my son in
America and to spend time with all the generations
of my family. Knowing me I’ll probably start up another
business at sometime in the future and I am
still going to be involved with Young Enterprise.
I will still be in school from time to time until the exams
finish and there are still a few events I’ve committed
to for Careers. I’ll be there on Results Day
too.
As I live locally I’ll still take a great interest in The
Academy and wish you all the happiest of times in
the future.
Love and best wishes to you all.
Jenny Butcher
Daniel Borer & Joanne Trott interview Mrs Butcher on her teaching career…..
“Take every opportunity that comes your way and have a brilliant life.”
What are your best memories of your time at Taunton Manor, Coulsdon High and Oasis Academy?
My favourite memories are of the times I’ve spent with students and colleagues. I loved it
when you could see when a student suddenly ‘got it’ when you’d spent time helping them to
understand a difficult piece of work. In addition, another lovely memory is remembering the
look on a student’s face on Results Day when they achieved the grades they needed and
getting the results which they had deserved because of the amount of hard work they had
put in. I love it when students come back to visit you after they’ve left and when I meet them
by chance in shops or even on holiday! I will never forget my visit to Bangalore as part of my
role as Global Links Coordinator and I still keep in touch with people I met out there. Also I
was awarded Teacher of the Year in the UK for Business and Enterprise in 2004. Students
were very impressed that I was on ‘Google’! I had a wonderful prize of an all-expenses paid trip to New York to
collect my prize, followed by a week at Columbia University to work with other teachers and business people interested
in helping young people access employment. I’ve also worked with amazing
colleagues, some of whom have become dear friends of mine.
Describe in three words how you feel about working at the schools?
The three words which describe my time working at Taunton Manor, Coulsdon High and
Oasis Academy are Friendship, Happiness and sometimes a sense of the Surreal.
Nothing has ever been boring.
What made you want to become a teacher?
From a very young age I have always wanted to become a teacher. I liked to share my
knowledge and experience with others and also when I was at school I had inspiring
teachers who helped and encouraged me to strive to become a teacher.
What was your favourite trip that you went on with the schools?
We used to have several school trips when I worked in the DT department. I remember
taking the first group of students to the V & A Museum to visit the Costume Court. They
had a large showcase of sixties clothes which the students loved – sadly I remember
wearing most of them!
In Business Studies we took part in many Enterprise
competitions where my students managed to always
do well which gave me a sense of pride being their
teacher. I went on three of the trips to France with the
MFL department. I remember Pete Gilbert (Head of
Languages) telling students to look out for the fish
when we went through the Channel Tunnel – they did!!
However my most life-changing memory is of my visit
to Bangalore with Miss Kavanagh. I am so glad that
three of our Year 13 are going out there with Miss
Madar this July.
What made you stay on when Coulsdon High
changed into the Academy?
Firstly I was curious
and I wanted to stay
on because I
wanted to teach
sixth formers again.
This was the age
group that I started
Coulsdon High School, July 2008
teaching in Croydon
in 1972. I was only four years older than my Upper
Sixth but I think they thought I was older. I also wanted
to extend the Careers Programme into the sixth form
and to work in the new building with its great new
facilities which will provide opportunities for the future
generations of the school.
Do you think the change to an Academy has made
a positive impact on the school?
Yes, I do believe the change to the Academy has made
a positive impact to the school and the community in
Old Coulsdon. I live locally and I like it when the
community give positive remarks about the school and
how it has changed for the better. It has also made a
positive impact as more and more people want to come
in to have a tour around the new build to see how great
it is. This therefore, will ensure more and more local
residents send their children to Oasis and help it grow
and flourish.
Who was your favourite year group when working
at the Academy?
There wasn’t
‘a favourite
year group’
during the
time of my
working life
as a teacher.
All the year
groups which
I have
worked with
have been
memorable
in their own
way. I looked on them as my projects, or a challenge,
to try and improve their performance with their studies.
I’m now teaching the children of parents who came to
this school when they were children. I have also taught
with three colleagues who used to be taught by me!
What was your most challenging moment when
working with Coulsdon High and Oasis Academy?
The most challenging moment was to try and keep
certain students on the straight and narrow and make
them realise the true value of education. I think this
challenge will still go on.
Which four things has working as a teacher taught
you?
During the time of working as a teacher it has taught
me to have a sense of humour with the students, be
very patient, to have a belief in students and also to be
flexible as no two days are ever the same!
What will you most miss about working as a
teacher?
When I retire I will miss the conversations with students
and colleagues, the lively environment of something
new happening every day and also the seasonal
events like the GCSE results in the summer and the
Christmas festivities. I won’t miss the bells!
What are you planning to do when you retire?
When I retire I will certainly be travelling more,
particularly to the USA where my son lives and works. I
want to spend more time with my family and to relax a
bit more. I have a large garden to look after and I may
run another small business.
If you weren’t teaching what other career path
would you have chosen?
I nearly became a textiles designer as this was a real
love of mine when I was training to teach Textiles and
Art. I still enjoy creative crafts. Lately I’ve become very
interested in local politics so who knows?
What is your history of working as a teacher?
I started teaching in 1972 at Selhurst High School for
Girls. This was a Grammer school about to become a
comprehensive senior high school. I then I left full time
work to have my children. I helped my husband to start
a computer hardware business and was quite happy
doing this. When I started looking around for a
secondary school for my daughter I visited Taunton
Manor and was offered a maternity cover for the then
Head of Home Economics ( now called Food Tech. and
Textiles.) That was in 1987. I took the job and the rest
as they say is history!
To a teacher and a friend..
The last two and a half years have been
precious and have given me the business
experience that I will remember and cherish
for the rest of my school life. Your dry sense
of humour made our days, when we were
feeling blue, and made the lessons even
more enjoyable. The memories of my first
week at school, when I was nervous to
approach anyone, you made me comfortable
and helped determine some of the qualities
that are within me today. Thank you for the
last five years at school, and for being the
funniest teacher.
“Over the years we have developed a special
working relationship.
Good luck for the future.
Thank you for all your help.
Marcus Falzon
“You have been the most amazing Business Studies
teacher ever! Since I was in Year 9 you always
helped me and encouraged me to do the best I
could and always made me confident in answering
questions and being an enthusiastic student in your
classes. We have had some very funny moments in
our classes and I will always remember you and
hope you will remember me!
Thank you so much for everything
you have done for me!
Have a well deserved and enjoyable
retirement!
Time for holidays, shopping and cruises!” Ashvin
“I would like to thank you for all the
hard work you have put in with the
business studies lessons and helping
me and my class.
I hope that you have a good life.”
Harold
“For all the years you taught me, I never had the chance to
say thank you, however now may not be the right time to say
so, I will be doing that when I (hopefully) pass my A-Levels!
Thank you for all your help over the years
as a mentor and a teacher.
Have a great retirement!
I would first like to start my stating what a privilege it has been to work
alongside Mrs Butcher.
In the project management of the Sixth Form she was an excellent source
of information, was always available to run ideas past and to seek advice
from. Mrs Butcher has provided careers guidance for so many students
and I know they truly appreciated her friendly and approachable manner.
Mrs Butcher has never lowered her high expectations and has motivated
our students to be the best and to fulfil their potential. She has always
been tremendously passionate about 'Young Enterprise' and her infectious
enthusiasm encouraged lots of students to get involved, with a number
getting to experience much success.
Mrs Butcher's professionalism, efficiency, love for our young people and commitment to always giving
her best will be how I will remember her. On behalf of the Sixth Form team, I would like to sincerely
thank Mrs Butcher for her effort and dedication. We are all going to miss her so much. I look forward to
welcoming Mrs Butcher back to the Academy as she will remain a valued member of our school
community.
Mr Philip McCullagh
Jenny has always been a great help and support to me whilst at Coulsdon High and now at OAC.
When I first started working in the Food department I was amazed at her wealth of knowledge about
the subject. I can remember the first year I taught GCSE Food and had to mark the coursework. Jenny
and I sat in the old Drama room, which is now under the new Sports Hall, for a day while she patiently
explained and showed me what needed to be done.
For years Jenny was part of the ‘Ladies who lunch’ group. We would meet in the old food room every
lunch time and put the world to rights, and occasionally gossip!!
Jenny’s care and guidance has helped me to be the teacher I am today.
(By the way Jenny, I haven’t forgotten I still owe you afternoon tea at Coulsdon Manor!)
Sue Buckingham
Jenny,
This message of best wishes and good luck is
sincerely sent to you.
On a personal note, you are a dear friend, who
is kind, supportive, gentle and genuine. You
are very helpful and kind in your thoughts and
your deeds. You are quite a sensitive person,
who always looks for the positive in people.
On a professional note, you are an example to
many teachers. Your dedication, love for the
students, helpful, caring and supportive attitude
have benefitted generations of students.
You always try to find solutions to issues and
you are relentless in your application for establishing
high standards.
Good luck in the future. live, love and laugh a
lot and keep in touch.
Carmen Patel x
I met Jenny on the day of my
interview for the position of
the Head of Year around 7
years ago. Although small of
stature Jenny looked quite
formidable and very much in
charge of her fiefdom. I soon
found that Jenny was a very
organised and professional
Head of Subject. Her subject
knowledge is superb and her
experience is undoubtedly
unmatched in the Croydon Borough.
Jenny is always organised and ready to take on an ever expanding profile of work ranging from subject
teacher, careers teacher, charity fund raiser and Assistant Head of Sixth Form. Jenny is always on the go
and I think that it’s the 26 years of walking the corridors that have taken the inches of her height.
Many hundreds of students and staff have benefited from the care and attention of Jenny who has
always been there as a sounding board and a shoulder. I have spent many hours listening to her words of
wisdom and many a conversation over the radio has helped to pass the day.
Jenny has been a valued colleague over the years and she will be a hard act to follow. I wish her
well with her retirement and know that her family, especially her grandchild, will benefit from having her
around more often.
Rob Martin
I have had the great experience of working with
Jenny for some twenty three years now and it only
seems like yesterday that I met her teaching food in
the Technology department. I visited the school as I
had been informed that they were interviewing and
Jenny was a member of staff that I met on that day
that convinced me that this was the school that I
wanted to work in.
When you first meet Jenny she has infectious
warmth that makes you realise that teaching is such
a fantastic career. Over the years Jenny has proved
that whatever she turns her hand to she strives to
achieve the best result. Not only did I have the great
pleasure working with her in the food and the
technology department I also worked with her as my
head of Business Studies. I am not a business
specialist but within two minutes of our first department
meeting, I realised I was in good hands. Handing
me the scheme of work she said “All you need to
know is in here” and she was correct. Her planning,
passion for the subject and keenness to help me do
well was outstanding.
A fond memory I have that shows another side of
Jenny is how competitive she is, and this was the
case when we came to comparing Business coursework
final assignments and final grades. How many
A*’s did you get Jenny? I always liked to let her
think that she had won (well that’s what you do
when she is the Head of Department!)
Jenny teaches with such passion and I have had
the fantastic privilege to visit her lessons and observe
her with her students and you can see that
they shine in the energy that she creates as she
moves from group to group.
Not a teacher you would what to get on the wrong
side…… especially when she was in the food technology
area. What she lacks in size she makes up
for in presence. Heaven forbid the student that got
on the wrong side of her especially if they did not
get their work experience forms in on time!
After all this time that I have worked with Jenny I
would consider her a friend and not just a colleague.
She has been there in times that have been
precious both inside and especially outside the
Academy and shared so many special moments to
do with my own family. Jenny has a natural caring,
selfless nature and will drop everything to help
others and for that I love her.
Jenny is an inspiration to us in the way that she
shares her knowledge and experiences and the way
that she takes every challenge as an opportunity.
Mrs Butcher has been involved with the Young Enterprise Scheme for many years and a
large number of students from this school have enjoyed success.
YOUNG ENTERPRISE—2013
I have been really proud of the three students in Year 11
who have taken part in The Young Enterprise Scheme this
year.
They are Lokesh Noruthun, Iftekhar Mullani and Tyrone
Ford.
Their company came third over all in Croydon which is a
great achievement. I was with them at the Gala Finals and
they gave an excellent presentation. The judges
commented on their team work, determination and
commitment. These are all great employability skills and so
the future looks good for them.
Very best wishes for your future enterprises gentlemen!
WORK EXPERIENCE AND CAREERS
As I am retiring I am very pleased to be able to hand over the responsibility of organising Work
Experience and Careers Guidance to Mrs Moore.
Every student in Year 10 should have handed in their work experience application form by now. If you
haven’t you need to do something about it this week.
Our joint Careers Convention which was very successful last year, will be run from Woodcote High
School in October. There will be more details nearer the time.
Very best wishes for the future to you all.

Oasis Academy Coulsdon Joins the
Football League Trust National
Education & Futsal Programme
A Collaboration between Oasis Academy Coulsdon
and the consortium leading The Football League
Trust national Futsal programme will combine
education excellence with the fastest growing
indoor sport on the planet – Futsal ...
A partnership involving Oasis Academy Coulsdon in
Surrey and The Football League Trust (FLT) Futsal
consortium, comprising the UK’s leading operator
@Futsal Group and sports education specialists TVS will
give young people aged between 16 – 18 years old a
unique opportunity to learn, train, work and play the fastest
growing indoor sport in the world – Futsal, alongside
a number of professional clubs from The Football League Trust, in a national league and pioneering education
programme.
The partnership will offer a number of funded places on this pioneering national education programme to
young people both male and female in the SE region of England. From September, the students will
begin a 2 year course improving their skills, learning to coach and referee Futsal, whilst studying for a
BTEC national qualification in Sport. When completed, the programme offers a number of pathways
ranging from a university education through to a career in the active sports and leisure sector.
The young people will have the chance to learn and train at professional football clubs in the region and
the @Futsal arenas using innovative learning methods involving an on-line learning platform. They will
then have the opportunity to play Futsal against other professional clubs as part of a National Futsal
League with The Football League Trust.
Oasis Academy Coulsdon Principal, David Millar, commented "Sport is a very important feature of Oasis
Academy Coulsdon and we are delighted to be joining this exciting new programme for 16 - 19 year olds.
I believe that this partnership will offer a high quality educational and sporting experience enabling our
students to progress to university degrees or employment".
Futsal is an official FIFA, UEFA and FA approved 5a-side variation of football, usually played indoors
with an emphasis on technique and creativity, which has grown popular in recent years. Budding stars of
the future will get to follow the same development path as global football stars like Messi and Ronaldo,
who honed their abilities playing the game of Futsal.
Frank Rodriguez, Managing Director of the @Futsal Group, commented, “ We are delighted to be collaborating
with Oasis Academy Coulsdon on a programme that will enable such positive and far reaching
outcomes for young people aspiring to careers or further education in football, sports or leisure“.
John Relish, from the Football League Trust comments, “The Football League Trust welcomes this new
partnership with Oasis Academy Coulsdon and our other partners and looks forward to delivering a high
quality education programme allied to an exciting match day experience “
The Education and Futsal programmes will also aim produce elite players that could represent Great
Britain in time for Futsal’s proposed debut at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, pending the outcome of ongoing
discussions for its inclusion as a demonstration
sport. With all of the home nations languishing at the
lower levels of FIFA’s official world rankings, one of
the programmes core aims is to develop the next generation
of international players so that the home nations
can rub shoulders with the world’s elite.
Young people male and female aged between 16- 19
wanting to join the Futsal & Education Programme
should apply urgently through the Futsal web site
About Futsal
Futsal is the only officially recognised form of
indoor football accepted by UEFA and FIFA, the
European and world governing bodies for football,
with world and European championships taking
place for club and national teams. It is reported to
be the world’s fastest growing indoor sport with
over 30 million players worldwide. Players such
as Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Messi and
many others have developed their abilities
playing Futsal from a young age. The Football
Association have now adopted Futsal and it is
now seen as a cornerstone of its strategic development plans. Futsal is an indoor version of association
football (soccer). The name “Futsal” simply combines the Spanish words for “hall” – Sala and “football” –
Futbol into Futsal. Futsal is played between two teams of five players, one of who is a goalkeeper. In
addition each team may have up to 7 substitutes, which means each team can comprise a maximum of
12 players. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the playing arena boundaries are marked with
touchlines lines like 11 aside football, and not walls or boards that players can use to rebound the ball.
Futsal is played with a size 4 regulation ball having 30% less bounce than normal. The ball can also be
kicked above head height, so goals are similar in size to hockey goals. Corners can be taken and
throw-ins are replaced by kick-ins from touch lines, both of which must be taken within 4 seconds. This
makes the game very fast, dynamic and exciting. As a small-sided game, players are constantly placed
in situations where they must receive or play whilst under pressure or in confined spaces and it places
considerable demand on technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness. It is also very exciting
and a huge amount of fun!
Mr Attenborough’s report on a visit to Swindon Futsal
At the beginning of May a group of year 10 boys travelled to Swindon with Mr Millar and Mr Attenborough
(Head of PE) to investigate the setting up of a Futsal Academy at Oasis Coulsdon.
We were greeted and treated extremely well and all the boys were invited to take part in a Futsal
coaching session with the Reading Football Club Futsal Academy, based at the Swindon arena. The
boys trained with the Reading Academy and then played full size (7 v 7) matches against them to finish.
While this was happening Mr Millar and Mr Attenborough met with Frank Rodriguez who introduced us to
the new FA initiative to bring Futsal into a new education programme to be delivered either at schools or
at a professional club. There were many ways
in which the Academy could be involved in the
programme including sponsoring what are
referred to as PODS in our area, but long term
to provide an opportunity for local students to
be taught the BTEC Sport Level 3 course and
train in Futsal as part of Oasis Academy
Coulsdon. This would also involve playing
regular Wednesday fixtures against other
Futsal Academies around the country.
The whole day was a wonderful experience for
the year 10 boys who enjoyed every minute of
it and in most of their matches beat the
that the new green colour tops are easier to wash and will look smarter for
longer. During 2013/14 current students may still wear the existing kit and
can change to the new tops when they grow out of them. Students joining
the Academy from September must buy the new version. The complete
uniform list is available on our website:
