Oasis students join Starbucks
Community Volunteering Day to help
transform Byron grounds.
On Friday 26 April, a group of Oasis Academy
Coulsdon students and staff joined over 200
volunteers from Starbucks and Oasis as part of a
community action day at Oasis Academy Byron.
The projects were varied and ambitious. During the
day, teams of Starbucks and Oasis volunteers
created a ‘sensory garden’, constructed willow
fencing around the allotment and even opened an
‘Insect Hotel’ which encourages desirable insects to
reside near the flower beds. As well as this ‘greenfingered’
activity, the day witnessed the assembling
of a new stage in the playground for performances,
the painting of a brand new mural and a general
make-over of benches, sand pits and outdoor
features.
Clare Wingrave, Principal of Oasis Byron said: “I’m
still staggered by how much our grounds have been
transformed in just four hours. It’s a great testament
to what we can achieve by working together and an
inspiring lesson for our children. We’re incredibly
grateful to Starbucks and the rest of our volunteers.
What a difference a day can make.”
OAC STATIONERY SHOP
It is essential that students arrive fully
equipped for learning every day. On Tuesday
7th May, Jessica Hann and a team of Year 9
students will be opening the OAC Stationery
Shop and students will be
able to buy all the essential
equipment they need for
lessons at VERY
reasonable prices.
The shop, located in the
playground, will be open
every day, at break-time
and lunchtime.

DRINKS
REMINDERS
As the warmer weather arrives, we would
like to remind students and Parents/
Carers that students are permitted to bring
in plain water in plastic water bottles.
These can be re-filled during break or
lunchtimes. High Energy or any form of
carbonated drinks are unhealthy and not
allowed in the Academy at any time .
MEDICATION
All medication must be handed in to Mrs
Gallagher in the Well-Being Centre, clearly
marked with the students’ name and dosage.
This also applies to over-the-counter pain
relief such ibuprofen, paracetamol or antihistamines.
No student is permitted to self-medicate or share
their medication with friends. We appreciate that
giving a friend a ‘headache’ tablet is done with the
best of intentions however it is dangerous to do so
and could cause serious harm.
If students are found in possession of any
medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, it will
be confiscated and given to Mrs Gallagher.
Parents and Carers will be contacted to discuss
their child’s medication requirements.
E-Communication
With the high cost of postage, our preferred way
of communicating general information and news
with Parents/Carers is via email and texts. Please
ensure we have your up to date email addresses
and mobile telephone numbers.

George's Story
On 25th May 2013 I will be
travelling up to Scotland to
climb Ben Nevis with my
Grandad, uncles and
cousins. I have set a target
to raise £100 for Cancer
Research.
This is a charity close to
my heart because I have lost close family members
to this nasty disease and need to raise as
much money as possible to help find a cure. I
believe this will be a fantastic challenge and a
great achievement.

Becca and Billy Laing took part in the
Swimathon last weekend at Warlingham Pool.
They swam 5km with a small assistance from
Mum, Dad and younger brother and proudly
managed to raise just under £400 for Marie
Curie Cancer.
Becca also qualified for the Sportshall UK
Indoor Athletics final at NEC Birmingham a few
weeks ago. As part of South London Harriers
she competed against 10 other regions from all
over the UK in a Speed Bounce competition and
4 x 1 Relay.
